About The Role

The role of the Financial Controller is central to the financial health and operational efficiency of The Commons. As a trusted advisor to the CFO, you will leverage your technical expertise and analytical skills to provide actionable insights, ensuring compliance, and driving process improvements.

The Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing the preparation of monthly financial reports, analysing variances, managing audit processes, and maintaining the integrity of financial data. You will support budgeting, forecasting, and strategic decision-making through financial modelling and scenario analysis.

This is a highly dynamic role that requires advanced technical skills, a proactive mindset, and the ability to lead and develop a team. Working within a collaborative environment, you will be empowered to streamline financial processes, implement new technologies, and foster a culture of excellence within the finance function.

About You

We are looking for a forward-thinking finance professional with a strong background in financial management, compliance, and team leadership. The ideal candidate will be motivated to step into a Financial Controller role, bringing advanced technical skills and a passion for process improvement.

Additional Skills And Attributes That Are Desirable Include

  • Professional certification (CA, CPA, or equivalent)
  • 5+ years of experience, with a strong focus on statutory reporting and audit processes.
  • Advanced Excel skills, with Power Query and SQL as a bonus
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent communication, leadership & project management skills
  • Experience in financial reporting and compliance with AASB/IFRS standards. Expertise in IFRS 16 is a bonus.
  • A proactive attitude and a focus on continuous improvement

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:

Financial Control

  • Oversee monthly financial reports, ensuring accuracy and compliance with group standards.
  • Analyse variances and provide detailed insights and recommendations to leadership.
  • Oversee reconciliation processes, maintaining the integrity and accuracy of financial data.

Audit & Compliance

  • Manage external audit processes, ensuring they are completed smoothly and efficiently.
  • Prepare general-purpose financial statements in compliance with AASB standards.

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Assist in refining and updating budgets and forecasts.
  • Provide financial modelling to support strategic initiatives and business decisions.

Process Improvements & Technology Implementation

  • Identify opportunities to streamline finance processes and enhance efficiency.
  • Lead the implementation of technologies and automated tools to assist with efficiency, controls and reporting.
  • Train and support team members in adopting new systems and processes.

Collaboration & Team Leadership

  • Act as a trusted advisor to cross-functional teams, fostering collaboration and working towards achieving key objectives.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop the finance team, promoting continuous improvement and professional growth.

Work Health & Safety

  • Conduct and maintain safe work practices by ensuring WHS standards are adhered to at all times
  • Ensure compliance with WHS standards. Communicate and educate members and team members to ensure a safe environment.
