The Role
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Underwriter with a strong legal background to join our team. The position will be responsible for making indemnity decisions in accordance with the terms and conditions of the policies underwritten by MDA National, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, maintaining the Underwriting Manual and providing expert advice on legal matters related to underwriting.

Key Deliverables and Responsibilities:


  • Review and update the Underwriting manual to ensure compliance with relevant legislative instruments.
  • Respond to indemnity questions in a timely fashion ensuring that all decisions on policy coverage are made in good faith and in accordance with laws and the authorities set out in the Underwriting Manual
  • Review and interpret legal documents, contracts, and agreements to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with legal and compliance teams to develop and implement underwriting policies and procedures.
  • Provide legal advice and support to the underwriting team on complex cases and claims and relevant remedies.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, legal developments, and regulatory changes affecting underwriting practices
  • Engage with all stakeholders and make recommendations for changes to the policy wordings in conjunction with the external Policy drafters
  • Assist with handling of complaints and submissions relating to Underwriting decisions.
  • Provide training on legal concepts and
  • Review marketing collateral or other product related documents to ensure underwriting intent is reflected accurately
  • Support other Underwriting functions as required

Skills and Experience

  • Highly organised and able to prioritise workloads

Formal Qualifications


  • Minimum 3 years insurance experience in professional indemnity or Medical Indemnity with a focus on legal aspects
  • Strong knowledge of insurance law and regulation and industry standards and be able to apply this knowledge to claims and underwriting queries
  • The candidate will ideally possess insurance industry qualifications at Certificate IV level or higher
  • RG146/Tier 2 qualification
