RESEARCH - Sexuality and gender Participation, barriers, facilitators and bullying experiences of trans people in sport and fitness: findings from a national community survey of trans people in Australia Sasha Bailey Benjamin Trevitt, Dr Sav Zwickl. Beau Newell, Emma Staples, Ryan Storr, Ada Cheung British Journal of Sports Medicine (28 October 2024) This study investigated sport and fitness participation rates among transgender and gender diverse (trans) individuals, comparing mental health outcomes between those who participate in sport/fitness and those who do not. It also examined internal and external barriers, as well as bullying experiences within sport/fitness settings. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted from February to April 2023 with trans participants aged 16+ living in Australia. The survey measured sport/fitness participation, barriers, and bullying through multiple-choice questions. Mental health was assessed using the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10) and self-reported self-harm and suicidality histories. Of 664 respondents (median age 32), around a third (32.8%) engaged regularly in sport/fitness. Key internal barriers included: - anxiety about reactions from others (63.9%) - body dissatisfaction/dysphoria (56.5%) - fears about feeling accepted/affirmed by others (54.7%). External barriers were: - inadequate bathroom/changing facilities (44.4%) - exclusionary gender rules and regulations (36.7%) - invasive or uncomfortable policies or procedures (23.3%). Over one-third (34.4%) of trans people had experienced gender-based bullying or exclusion. Regular sport/fitness participation was associated with significantly lower K10 scores and a 40% reduction in odds of recent thoughts of self-harm and suicide. ◾ Research (open access) - https://lnkd.in/gGe29y2t University of Sydney, NSW Health, University of Melbourne, Pride in Sport Australia, Swinburne University of Technology If you've conducted, planned, or are currently engaged in sport research in Australia, consider adding it to the Clearinghouse for Sport, Register of Sport Research - https://lnkd.in/gjjZRCp5 #evidencebase #AusNSRA #clearinghouseforsport #playwell

RESEARCH - Women in sport Understanding the Constraints Shaping Women’s Intentions to Stop Playing Community Sport Samantha Marshall, Nicola McNeil, Emma Seal, and Matthew Nicholson Leisure Science (22 October 2024) This study looked at the barriers that prevent women from participating in community basketball and whether these barriers change with age, affecting their decision to quit the sport. A mixed-methods approach was used. In the first phase, Concept Mapping identified the barriers faced by Australian women basketball players. In the second phase, survey data were analysed to see how age and these identified barriers influenced women's intention to leave basketball. The study found younger women are more likely to quit basketball than older women, especially due to fewer opportunities to play and gender discrimination. These barriers increase the risk of dropping out altogether. If young women overcome early challenges, they’re less likely to see them as obstacles later. Sports organisations should focus on providing more opportunities for young women to play and eliminate discrimination to support continued participation. ◾ Research (open access) - https://lnkd.in/g9_CGCy6 La Trobe University, RMIT University, Monash University, Indonesia If you've conducted, planned, or are currently engaged in sport research in Australia, consider adding it to the Clearinghouse for Sport, Register of Sport Research - https://lnkd.in/gjjZRCp5 #evidencebase #AusNSRA #clearinghouseforsport #playwell #winwell

RESEARCH - Sport in education Issues in staffing and outsourcing in schools. Who’s teaching health and physical education? Jessica Amy Sears (nee Graham), Rachel Wilson Australian Journal of Education (14 August 2024) Research from Charles Sturt University and the University of Technology Sydney examined the staffing and delivery of Health and Physical Education (HPE) in New South Wales government schools. The study surveyed 556 schools, representing 30% of public schools across diverse locations. Findings show that 67% of schools outsource HPE, often without specialist teachers, raising concerns about the quality and equity of curriculum delivery. Some students miss lessons or components due to required fees they cannot afford. These disparities are reflected in the difference between private schools with advanced facilities and public schools that lack access to basic resources such as council playing fields. The study highlights the need for further research on staffing and outsourcing across the country, particularly in terms of fairness and its impact on students' health and wellbeing. ◾ Media release (18 October 2024) - https://lnkd.in/gvMcjJi9 ◾ Research (open access) - https://lnkd.in/eejVUWEx If you've conducted, planned, or are currently engaged in sport research in Australia, consider adding it to the Clearinghouse for Sport, Register of Sport Research - https://lnkd.in/gjjZRCp5 #evidencebase #AusNSRA #clearinghouseforsport #playwell #winwell

RESEARCH - value of sport Striving for Global Consensus: A Systematic Review of Social Return on Investment Applied to Physical Activity and Sport Inés Nieto, Xián Mayo, Professor Larissa Davies, Dr Lindsey Reece, Dr. Ben Strafford, and Professor Alfonso Jimenez Journal of Physical Activity and Health (9 October 2024) This systematic review on the social return on investment of physical activity and sport (PAS) aimed to find what are the social outcomes measured in previous PAS literature and how are these measured and valued. The review included 55 documents from 2010 to 2022, covering various continents except America. Most studies evaluated the benefits of specific programs, and 6 measured the engagement in PAS at the population level based on national or community surveys. The social outcomes identified were health (94.5%), crime (50.9%), education (83.6%), subjective well-being (89.1%), social capital (60%), and other (3.6%–23.6%). The valuation methods included willingness to pay, well-being valuation, the cost of an activity that could result in the same outcome, and cost databases associating outcomes with a monetary value. The findings highlight the diverse approaches in measuring and valuing PAS’s social impact. This review will inform a Delphi study to reach a Global Consensus Statement on this topic. ◾ Research (open access) - https://lnkd.in/eejVUWEx If you've conducted, planned, or are currently engaged in sport research in Australia, consider adding it to the Clearinghouse for Sport, Register of Sport Research - https://lnkd.in/gjjZRCp5 #evidencebase #AusNSRA #clearinghouseforsport #playwell #winwell

RESEARCH - Mental health and wellbeing Sport Participation Trajectories and Loneliness: Evidence from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children Katherine Owen, Karine Manera, Philip Clare, Michelle Lim, Ben Smith, Philayrath Phongsavan, David Lubans, Pamela Qualter, Rochelle Eime, and Ding Ding Journal of Physical Activity and Health (19 September 2024) This study aimed to identify patterns of sport participation—overall, team, and individual—and examine their associations with loneliness in young people. Data from 4241 young people, spanning waves 3 (8–9 years) to 9 (20–21 years) of the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children, were analysed. The findings suggest that young people who consistently participate in sports, especially team sports, experience reduced loneliness. Promoting continued sports participation can enhance physical, mental, and social health, with team sports offering additional benefits due to their group nature. ◾ Research (open access) - https://lnkd.in/gKCCgh8S University of Sydney, University of Newcastle, Federation University Australia If you've conducted, planned, or are currently engaged in sport research in Australia, consider adding it to the Clearinghouse for Sport, Register of Sport Research - https://lnkd.in/gjjZRCp5 #evidencebase #AusNSRA #clearinghouseforsport #playwell #winwell

RESEARCH - Women in sport A socio-ecological approach to understanding the experiences of women and girls playing male-dominated sports Aurélie Pankowiak (PhD), Meghan Casey, Rochelle Eime, and Hans Westerbeek Sport in Society (19 August 2024) This study aimed to understand the experiences of women and girls playing male-dominated sports through a gendered lens on the socio-ecological model. Data collected from fifteen semi-structured interviews with Australian women and girls was thematically analysed at the societal, the organisational/community, the interpersonal and the intrapersonal levels. The study highlights that gendered factors shaped women’s and girls’ experiences at all levels. Club leadership valued women and girls’ inclusion, but resources were sometimes unevenly committed, and men’s participation and leadership were privileged. This inequity fuelled women and girls’ desire to advocate change for future generations. A socio-ecological system approach is critical to continue gender equity developments in sport. ◾ Research (open access) - https://lnkd.in/gJeCTxe2 Victoria University, Federation University Australia If you've conducted, planned, or are currently engaged in sport research in Australia, consider adding it to the Clearinghouse for Sport, Register of Sport Research - https://lnkd.in/gjjZRCp5 #evidencebase #AusNSRA #clearinghouseforsport #playwell #winwell
