Sport creates spaces - on and off the field - where women and girls are safe, respected, valued and treated as equals. We were so pleased to work with the Centre for Australia-India Relations, Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation, and WA Cricket to host the Foreign Minister and leading sports luminaries for an insightful discussion into how far we’ve come; and the work that still lies ahead. Thanks also to Rita Saffioti MLA, Indian Deputy High Commissioner Suneet Mehta and Tim Thomas for insightful remarks 🇦🇺🤝🇮🇳🏏 Lanie Chopping | Emily Roper | Jags Krishnan | Amarjeet Singh Takhi | Nashid Chowdhury | Katrina Powell | Bonnie Raynor | Avril Fahey | John Stephenson | Paritosh(Pari) Misra | Brad Hogg

Australia and India share a love of cricket. Our two countries are also working together to advance gender equality in sport. Ahead of the third ODI, I met with Australia’s women cricketers including captain Tahlia McGrath - as well as some future stars. As part of the Centre for Australia-India Relations’ Breaking Barriers Through Sport event I joined Katrina Powell, Christina Matthews and Bhavisha Devchand to discuss how we can all contribute to the progress needed in sport and across society. I thank them for sharing their experiences and perspectives. Labor knows that when women succeed, Australia succeeds - that’s why we’re working to achieve gender equality on and off the pitch.
