Last week, we saw over 50 people gather for the “Five by Five” collaborative event at the beautiful Cairns Visitors Centre in the Botanical Gardens. The diverse perspectives from our presenters demonstrated that suicide prevention has many different aspects and approaches. All presentations cycled back to the theme that, in many ways, we are all deeply interconnected. Anthony, from Torres & Cape Health and Hospital Service, presented on pathways of care. Shammah introduced Family Drug Support, providing information, education, and mutual support for families of those affected by drug and alcohol use. Nick discussed the diverse aspects of the Culture Care Connect program—a First Nations-specific partnership approach to suicide across Far North Queensland. Andrea and her team from Centacare FNQ invited us to learn about the refugee journey, highlighting the importance of belonging, working, and rebuilding a new life. Jackie and Debbie, founders of Talk About It Tuesday, shared their personal stories of loss and hope, emphasising the power of reaching out to others. A key theme that emerged was the power of peer support—being open to listening, and understanding that judgment has no place in suicide prevention. As the Collaborative work builds, relationships deepen, new ideas emerge and strong connections enable us to move forward in shaping how we approach our work, embrace new ways of thinking about suicide, and create the society we want to live in. A huge thank you to the presenters: Anthony, Shammah, Nick, Andrea, Ambika, Javier, Debbie, and Jackie!

Many people are rethinking what is important in the design and creation of our society. Again this resonates clearly with the ideas generated by the Life Promotion and Suicide Prevention FNQ Collaborative work.
"#Loneliness is not an illness, but a feature of #urbanplanning and societal systems that have not prioritised people's #health and social needs." "However, actions to address loneliness tend to be mental health oriented, treatment focused, and weak or ineffective." Thank you for these powerful points Professors Xiaoqi Feng and Thomas Astell-Burt!, backed by research and evidence. It is something that the global #placemaking and community development movements have been saying for decades as well! The statistics in Australia are frightening. Ending Loneliness Together says that: 😢 Almost 1 in 3 Australians feel lonely 🌀 1 in 6 Australians are experiencing severe loneliness Xiaoqi Feng and Thomas Astell-Burt's recommendations are also very aligned to #placemaking! Recommendation #1. Reframe the problem from personal to environmental. Shift the culture of blame for loneliness away from the individual and thereby enabling greater focus on investing in place-based initiatives that foster social connections, place-attachment, and belonging. https://lnkd.in/gNvN8wxC Recommendation #2 Improve Places Around People Invest in high quality research on lonelygenic environments to inform urban planning, potentially focussing on Transport-Oriented Development or other major investments (e.g., new parks or libraries) as a starting point for demonstration projects. Recommendation #3 (Re)Connect People With Places This is something that #placemaking and #asset-based community development focus on everyday! More information on the research into 'lonelygenic' can be found at https://lnkd.in/gi_kpNiW Time for more action! How we talk about suicide really matters! Thank you Thirrili there is plenty to consider and act on in this resource post.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 Words can hold great power. The way we yarn about suicide can shape perceptions, reduce stigma, and influence whether someone feels safe to seek help. By choosing compassionate language, we foster understanding, encourage help-seeking, and create a space where mental health and suicide can be discussed without shame. Let’s have a yarn with care; we know our words can make a difference. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗺𝗮 Words matter: How language helps to break down stigma. Stigmatising language can create fear, shame, and barriers to seeking support. When people feel judged or misunderstood, they might remain silent, increasing their distress. Words also have the ability to heal. Thoughtful and respectful language acknowledges experiences, nurtures connection, and promotes open dialogue about mental health and suicide. By choosing compassion, we create safe spaces where mob can feel supported, heard, and empowered to seek help. Let’s break the stigma, one caring yarn at a time. 𝗘𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 Research indicates that directly asking about suicide does not increase the likelihood of suicide occurring. It’s important to create safe spaces for yarning and to remind people that they're not alone. Avoiding the topic often results in misunderstanding, confusion, and shame, which creates more barriers to seeking support. Let’s create safe spaces for real conversations, empowering our mob to speak up and seek help. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 There is strength in every story. A strength-based approach shifts the focus from risks to resilience, highlighting what’s going well, the supports around us, and how we’ve coped before. We can bring strengths to the surface through caring conversations, fostering hope and healing.
