Dr Julieta Galante, Deputy Director of the Contemplative Studies Centre at Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences, reflects on the potential of mindfulness in education in a recent article by The Guardian. Drawing on her experience with the University of Cambridge’s Mindfulness for Students trial, she emphasises the importance of keeping mindfulness offerings optional rather than mandatory. Based at Melbourne Connect, the Contemplative Studies Centre is an evidence-based research hub that explores traditional, modern, and academic perspectives on contemplative practices, including mindfulness, health, and wellbeing. “Despite all the talk of joy and togetherness, the holiday season often upholds the same inequities it claims to transcend,” says Mira Gunawansa from The Future of Work Lab, based at Melbourne Connect Co-working. She highlights that for marginalised women, the holiday season can bring additional burdens, such as navigating dual traditions, managing microaggressions, or overperforming to gain acceptance. This calls for a rethinking of how we approach this time of year to ensure a genuine commitment to equity and inclusion. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gGeYt8De

What an incredible year of groundbreaking discussions, inspiring exchanges of ideas, and out-of-the-box creative thinking we’ve had at Melbourne Connect! This year, we brought together talented researchers, industry thought leaders, and innovation enthusiasts to collaborate and spark new possibilities. As part of our 2024 program, we hosted our largest flagship festival yet—Melbourne Connect Innovation Week—featuring 40 events, 42 partners, and over 3,300 registrations. In addition, we held three keynote events as part of our Future of series, where experts shared thought-provoking insights on the evolving landscapes of urban cities, the entertainment industry, and the education sector. These engaging sessions attracted over 500 attendees and garnered more than 53,000 online views. Throughout the year, we were privileged to host a range of events exploring the latest opportunities and challenges in AI as part of our AI at Melbourne Colloquium series. Notable speakers included Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, who shared her valuable insights into the ethical implications of AI on the digital landscape. As we look ahead, we’re excited about the opportunities the new year will bring. Together, we’ll continue to thrive as a hub for collaboration, innovation, and excellence. #melbconnect University of Melbourne, Lendlease, Airwallex, PHORIA, City of Melbourne
