There's nothing better than seeing your product on the shelf! (And that's our aim for the complementary medicine solutions we're working on) ... Today we were excited to host a research and development delegation from Kirin Holdings in Japan, alongside our long-term collaborators Blackmores Group and Blackmores Institute. If you didn't know, Blackmores sits within the health and science division of Kirin. Yep, they make beer, but their foray into R&D in the health space is new and fast growing. As Lesley Braun, Director of Blackmores Institute and NICM/Western Sydney University Adjunct Associate Professor, said to the delegation: "I’m hoping this is going to be the start of a new relationship going forward. The purpose of science is to challenge ourselves and create innovative technologies which advance our knowledge and create shared value. Others focus on shelf to bench but we’re exploring the concept of bench to shelf. "It’s about putting patients and consumers first. In medicine we are patient centred and person centred, so we need to be that in the research space as well. It’s something that’s very exciting and we’re really looking forward to developing that more." Blackmores have a longstanding history with our Institiute, and Lesley first connected with our former director Alan Bensoussan more than a decade ago. We're looking forward to continuing that relationship and working with our Japanese networks. Watch this space! During the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor George Williams’ visit to NICM Health Research Institute today, I had the opportunity to ask an important question about how Western Sydney University is supporting students from CALD backgrounds, especially those affected by the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. As an international student from Lebanon, I found it reassuring to hear the university’s commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. I look forward to seeing further initiatives to strengthen support for our diverse student community during these challenging times. Moments like these remind us of the power of being heard and the importance of creating spaces where every voice matters.

The moment our Vice-Chancellor George Williams entered our world-class complementary medicine dispensary - always gets a great reaction from visitors! Plus a tour of our building for the first time which George said was “a remarkable space”. “I want us to change the world here at Western Sydney University,” he shared at a fantastic turn out for the Westmead campus town hall in our Judy Jacka Conference Centre Jacka Foundation for Natural Therapies. “I want us to do things that are better for this planet, like you do here at the institute. More people should know how good our facilities are and the large community impact we have. We’re in the business of solving problems and we have pockets of brilliance right here.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. Wrapping up this year’s successful seminar series here at our Institute with Associate Professor Lei Si. Dr Si is from Western Sydney University’s Translational Health Research Institute and is an expert in health economics. His research explores methods to promote efficient and equitable distribution of healthcare sources. He has extensive experience in cost-of-illness analysis, quality-of-life research, and health economic evaluation alongside clinical trials and model-based health economic evaluation. Our public seminars provide a platform for students and researchers to present their work and findings, allowing for further collaboration, networking and enlightening discussions.
