Congratulations to Professor Sarah Hilmer who has been awarded $3 million in Australian Government Medical Research Future Fund (#MRFF) funding to identify and reduce the impact of frailty in older people. Professor Hilmer's project will help tackle one of the biggest challenges facing older people by developing real-time frailty monitoring technology. The project will also help to bring models of care in line with international guidelines, which strongly recommend screening all older people for frailty. A new University of Sydney study has identified a constituent in the cannabis plant that improves sleep. The component, known as cannabinol (CBN), reported an increase in REM and non-REM sleep in rats. The study provides the first objective evidence that CBN increases sleep, human trials are under way. In a related study, Professor Iain McGregor initiated a placebo-controlled randomised human clinical trial in insomnia patients. “Our research encourages further basic and clinical research on CBN as a new treatment strategy for sleep disorders, including insomnia.” Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/g29GPbtE

Congratulations to our two medicine and health researchers who have received a total of $1.7m to explore respective research into protein functions and chronic conditions. Associate Professor Mark Larance and Dr Sophie Lewis have received this funding through the Australian Research Council's prestigious Linkage programs: the Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities (LIEF) scheme and the Linkage Project scheme respectively. Associate Professor Larance has received a LIEF project grant of over $1.5m to establish a state-of-the-art platform to characterise protein function at the single-cell level across a range of biological samples including yeast, plants, animals and humans. Dr Lewis has received a Linkage Project grant of over $200k to examine, from multiple perspectives, how young people and their families navigate the social, educational and financial aspects of growing up while living with a chronic condition.
