Thank you Prof Yanping Yuan and Dr Xiaowen SU (Mech.Eng. @ Southwest Jiaotong University) for hosting my return visit to Chengdu, capital of China's Szechuan Province. 9 thru 16 November witnessed a "great leap forward" in our understanding of non-steady-state thermal comfort, and it was very gratifying to see our collaboration already bearing fruit with the publication of our paper on transitional spaces of a high-speed railway station building appearing in Building & Environment. During my visit I also had the pleasure of delivering a special lecture on overheating of bedrooms and living rooms. The field evidence (IEQ Lab - University of Sydney) clearly highlights the disconnect between CIBSE TM59 overheating guidelines and the lived reality in Australian homes. I’m pleased to announce that our project, "Advancing crisis resilience in Southeast Asia through immersive technologies and AI-supported community engagement", has been awarded funding by the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre. This project, a collaboration with Dr Duy K. Le (Ph.D) from VNUHCM - University of Science, brings together a multidisciplinary team including Callum Parker, Soojeong Yoo, and myself. Together, we aim to investigate innovative ways to enhance community engagement and crisis resilience with communities in Vietnam. We are grateful to the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre for supporting this important work, and we look forward to the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in this critical area. Two weeks ago, I also had the privilege of visiting the School of Design at Shanghai Jiao Tong University with Thomas Parkinson. Thank you, Prof. Li Lan for your warm welcome and for providing us with an incredible opportunity to present our research to your colleagues and students. I was truly impressed by Prof. Lan team quality of research. It’s clear that there are countless opportunities for collaboration between the IEQ Lab - University of Sydney and the School of Architecture, Design and Planning - University of Sydney and the School of Design at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and I am excited about the potential for future joint projects.  Thank you Prof Lan for your wonderful hospitality and to the students for giving us a tour of their stunning campus. I was delighted to participate last week as an invited speaker at the “Forum of AI-empowered Sustainable Development Goals” organized by Tongji University as a part of the International Talent Conference 2024 in Shanghai. Then we had a wonderful workshop with the editorial board of She Ji: The Journal of Design, Economics, and Innovation at the College of Design and Innovation at Tongji University. She Ji really is a unique venue for top design research with an exciting future. My first post-Covid academic event and I'm so glad to have met some old and to make new friends. The list is long, but first my thanks to Ken Friedman who has been a constant mentor and support for over 15 years, Yongqi Lou and Jin Ma for their wonderful work with She Ji and elevating design in China and globally. Jianxi Luo, Tao Shen, Cees de Bont, Peter Jones, Guillermina Noel, Prof. Sabine Junginger, PhD, Danielle Wilde, pieter desmet, Haian Xue, Dr. Gjoko Muratovski, Barry Katz, Derek Lomas, Carlos Teixeira, Kaja Tooming Buchanan, Jorge Frascara, Eija Salmi FRSA. A collection of super interesting people with whom it was a delight to spend time, learn, and share ideas. When I decided to pursue a PhD back in 1999, I did it out of frustration with the disconnect between design practice and theory. 25 years later, communities like She Ji have grown globally and it's very exciting to see their impact and to imagine how much progress we have made as a field -as well as how much more will be done in the next 25 years! Last week, members from our School community represented ADP at the World Urban Forum 2024 in Cairo, Egypt. Themed 'Cities of Opportunities: Connecting Culture and Innovation', the Forum brought together stakeholders from across the globe to address challenges for sustainable urbanisation. I'm delighted to share that I've joined Sydney Policy Lab as Deputy Director (Design). When I joined the University of Sydney, I was excited about the potential to work across the many faculties and schools. One of my first interactions outside Architecture, Design and Planning - University of Sydney was with Sydney Policy Lab and it's great to be able to continue to deepen that connection. It also feels like a full circle moment - before I came back to academia I worked in local government as a policy officer and I'm curious to see just how much has changed in those intervening years. I'm looking forward to working alongside Kate Harrison Brennan and the team to explore how best design can support and enable engagement within and across spaces of policy-making. Keen to start lots of new conversations about design and policy, governance and community engagement too - reach out if you'd like to chat. And finally - I'm not disappearing from ADP and will still be Head of Design (just a slightly busier one!). I'm super proud of our talented, curious and engaged design team and of everything we've managed to achieve across the discipline.
