Head to Osaka and check out the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, which has opened after more than 30 years of planning in February 2022. The museum is host to some of Japan’s largest art collections including works by Dali, Magritte and Japanese painter Jiro Yoshihara.
In Kobe? Don’t miss átoa at the Kobe Port Museum. A theatrical aquarium that combines stage and digital art is a one-of-a-kind experience to delight the senses.
And if you’d rather stay in the city, head to Shibuya Sky for 360-degree views on the open-air observation deck. It’s approximately 230 metres above ground, located at the highest point in Shibuya. Sky also has digital art displays and a bar on the 46th floor to take in the incredible views.
Spend a day at a quirky cafe

While most of us have heard about Japan’s cat cafes where you can sip tea alongside feline companions, there are spots to cater for every type of animal lover.
mipig cafe has six locations nationwide where guests can spend time with tiny pigs that grow to a max of 40kg. Also in Tokyo and a short walk away from Shibuya station, is Chiku Chiku. The café is home to miniature hedgehogs who spend their days lazing around in dollhouses. And finally, if furry companions aren’t quite exciting enough, you can always spend the day with reptiles at the classic Tokyo Snake Café.
Family fun

Located at Universal Studios, Super Nintendo World in Osaka is a video game lover’s wonderland. Get up close to your favourite characters Mario and Princess Peach, discover Koopa’s Castle or hop on a virtual reality roller coaster. Don’t forget to try Chef Toad’s creations at Kinopio’s Café to refuel after a busy day.
For Studio Ghibli fans, Ghibli Park is a fairy tale come true. Opening in Aichi Prefecture in November 2022, the park is a recreation of popular settings and landscapes from Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro amongst others. While there are no rides in this theme park, it’s an immersive experience for all ages.
Take a bite out of Tokyo
Did you know that Tokyo has 203 Michelin starred restaurants, more than any other city in the world? There are 12 three-star restaurants, with three maintaining their status for the 15th consecutive year. A trip to Japan isn’t complete without a visit to legendary establishments Kanda, Joël Robuchon and Quintessence. Book ahead to avoid disappointment! But there aren’t only fining dining options to check out, there are plenty of affordable starred restaurants to enjoy. One option is Ginza Hachigo, the newest ramen joint to receive its first Michelin star.
Fly direct from Australia to Japan with All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines and Qantas Airways with an average flight time of 10 hours. If you're after a hot deal, book China Airlines via Taipei- offer ends 22 October.
