The stunning experience of Ijen Crater - sulfur smoke and magnificent scenery
#JanuaryGoodPlaces2025
The moment we arrived at the Ijen crater, we finally witnessed the world wonder, the blue flame. However, the real challenge had just begun! The crater was filled with a strong smell of sulfur. As soon as I inhaled it, I felt a choking and stinging pain in my nose, my throat was dry and itchy, I started coughing non-stop, and I couldn't help but cry. I felt really uncomfortable at the time and just wanted to leave this place filled with sulfur smoke as soon as possible.
However, my husband was still immersed in taking pictures, concentrating on capturing this rare sight, and I could only stand aside and wait. Fortunately, after a few minutes, the smoke gradually dissipated with the wind, the vision became clear, and the scene before us was breathtaking - a surreal and magnificent view! All the hard work instantly became worth it. This is one of the most dreamy and shocking scenery we have ever seen in our lives.
Although the process is arduous and the smell of sulfur in the crater is unpleasant, the journey is definitely worth it. If you plan to go, remember to bring a gas mask or respirator and wait patiently for the smoke to clear.
