Guadalquivir River

The Guadalquivir is the fifth-longest river in the Iberian Peninsula and one of the most significant in Spain. Its name is derived from the Arabic "al-Wādi al-Kabīr," meaning "the great river." The Guadalquivir is approximately 657 kilometers (408 miles) long, flowing entirely within southern Spain. The river originates in the Cazorla Mountains in Jaén province. It flows westward and empties into the Atlantic Ocean near Sanlúcar de Barrameda in Cádiz. Cultural and Historical Importance: The Guadalquivir basin has been an important region throughout history, serving as a vital waterway for trade and agriculture. Cities along the river, such as Seville and Córdoba, were significant cultural and economic hubs during Roman and Moorish rule. Historically, the Guadalquivir was navigable up to Córdoba. Today, it is navigable for large ships as far as Seville, making it the only navigable river in Spain. The river supports a rich ecosystem and passes through the Doñana National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its wetlands and diverse wildlife.
