Explore Iwate Prefecture’s local crafts “Nanbu Ironware”: Morioka City IWACHU Iwatetsu Museum
#2024Travel Review
When traveling to Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, in addition to visiting the natural features and history and culture, there is also a special craft that you should not miss, that is the famous #Southern Ironware.
"Nanbu Ironware" refers to the cast iron products produced in Morioka City and Oshu City's Mizusawa District. Because Iwate Prefecture is blessed with high-quality iron ore and exquisite craftsmanship, Nanbu Ironware has become a local specialty and a valuable gift exchanged among celebrities.
IWACHU (Iwachu Ironware Museum) is the store I visited this time. It combines a product store and an art display. You can also see the craftsmen polishing and casting process on site. It is really interesting!
Cast iron is used in a wide range of applications, from cast iron kettles and cups for making tea to kitchen utensils. You can take one home, and you can get a tax refund if you spend enough!

Autumn leaves and sunrise at Morioka Castle ruins, ranked second among the must-visit cities selected by the New York Times
#2024Travel Review
#Morioka was ranked 2nd among the 52 cities selected by the New York Times Magazine as a must-visit. People can’t help but wonder, what is the charm of Morioka City, located in Iwate Prefecture?
In 2024, during my maple viewing trip to the Northeast, I traveled from Sendai to Aomori and visited Morioka City, a charming city.
Morioka is located in the central hub of six northeastern counties in Japan. The urban area is run by the Nakatsu River and is surrounded by mountains. It has retro buildings from the Meiji era and the ruins of Morioka Castle with beautiful stone walls. It is surrounded by mountains and rivers, and the red leaves are dyed yellow. A beautiful landscape painting.
This time I woke up very early and took a walk to Morioka Castle Park. This historical site was selected as one of the top 100 castles in Japan and one of the top 100 parks in Japan. The maple leaves and ginkgo trees on the stone walls were in full bloom, and the sky was red and golden. Slowly rising into the sky, it is really beautiful.
Not far from Iwate Park, there is a beautiful building: the Iwate Bank Red Brick Building. Designed by architect Tatsuno Kingo and Kasai Manji Architects, it is full of Renaissance style. It is also worth taking a look and visiting together.

Golden and red, share the ginkgo viewing spots in Northeast Japan
#GINKGO #100 Ways to Travel
In addition to red leaves in autumn in Northeast Japan, yellow leaves are also indispensable #gingko. During this free trip to Northeast Japan, I visited several scenic spots where ginkgos are in full bloom. I share them as follows:
#Kakunodate is known as Oku's Little Kyoto, especially the street in the samurai house. The maple leaves and ginkgo trees bloom at the same time, dyeing the entire thatched house of the samurai house in a golden red. It is really beautiful!
#Morioka Castle Ruins Morioka Castle, located close to the river and located high up, is full of cherry blossoms, maples, and ginkgo trees. With the remains of the city wall as the background, the golden ginkgo trees stand tall and straight, giving it a unique sense of history.
# aomori Ginkgo is a street tree in Aomori. Ginkgo trees are planted on both sides of the main road extending to the harbor next to A-Factory, but the intervals are a bit wide. Each blooming ginkgo has a lonely beauty.
#中野山 Although it is a well-known maple viewing spot, there are still huge ginkgo trees along the maple viewing platform. Especially at the maple viewing platform, there are whole yellow leaves, overwhelmingly dyeing the entire mountain forest yellow, which is quite healing.
#OiraseStream The most popular natural attraction in Northeast Japan, the gurgling stream, the red and yellow colors of autumn, and the sunlight shining through the gaps between the maple leaves and ginkgo trees, are as beautiful as a painting. There are many kinds of trees in Oirase Stream, including red leaves, ginkgo, cedar and other color-changing deciduous trees. Once the seasons change, it is even more beautiful and it is extremely pleasant to walk along it.

Recommended affordable business hotels in Morioka: Grand Hotel
#100WAYS TO TRAVEL # BATH HOTEL
A self-driving trip to Northeast Japan, returning from Aomori, returning to the relay point Morioka, and staying overnight. Since we were checking in on a Saturday, room prices in urban areas are generally higher, so we compared prices and chose to stay at the Grand Hotel.
Grand Hotel has a good location, within a 10-minute walk from Morioka Castle ruins and Iwate Bank. Just around the corner from the hotel is a busy shopping street, which is very convenient for shopping and eating.
The hotel itself has a sense of age. Both the building itself and the decoration pattern are in a retro and old-school style. The room is not small, and is larger than some newer hotel rooms. It is also equipped with a small sofa and a bathtub.
As for the price, a twin room costs NT$2,500 per night, including breakfast, which is not bad in terms of CP value. The bed is easy to lie down and sleep well, and the breakfast is also rich, but it's just not that new.

Morioka, Japan - Thick-cut pork cutlets in a shopping mall
#100 Ways to Travel
My first meal in Morioka was not to eat cold noodles and grilled pork, but to eat thick-cut katsu fried pork cutlets!
とんかつ Kamiruzaka さくら イオンモール
This tonkatsu specialty store located in #AEONMALLMorioka is strange in that there are not many customers, but the food is served very slowly, but the taste is quite delicious!
It turns out that everything is cooked to order, and even the white rice is cooked in an earthen pot. No wonder it is so moist and plump. I ordered three fried items: thick-cut pork chop, Hiroshima oyster, omul and pork tenderloin.
The fried dough is crispy but not dry, the pork filling locks in the soup and freshness, and is tender and oily. It performs well! Anyway, the key to ordering meat is that thick cuts are best. Served with extremely fine shreds of cabbage, it perfectly eliminates the greasiness.

Morioka, a Small and Tranquil Town in Iwate Prefecture
Traveling from Tokyo to Morioka, a town in Iwate Prefecture in the Tohoku region, this is my second visit to Morioka.
The first time was in spring, to see the cherry blossoms in full bloom at Kitakami. This time, also in spring, I came to see the Dragon Eye at Hachimantai in Akita Prefecture. Since I'm staying overnight, I must take a stroll around the town, stopping by Morioka Hachimangu Shrine, the town's important temple, to pray for good fortune. Then, I continued walking and taking pictures around the Kitakami River bridge. The weather was great, the flowers beautiful, and the walk was absolutely enjoyable.
Along the way, I stopped by various fruit shops and snack stores. It's easy to walk around, and the weather is nice. If you have the chance, come and visit this town.
Cherry Blossoms Under the Rain: A Morioka Tale
On a gloomy, drizzling day in Morioka, we took the scenic route, venturing out into the cold to truly immerse ourselves in the spectacle of cherry blossoms. With the grey sky as a backdrop, the blossoms' delicate pink seemed to glow, their fleeting beauty heightened by the rain's soft patter.
Stepping out of the car, we felt the chill of the rain, the moisture a refreshing contrast to the warm cocoon of the vehicle. The sensation of raindrops on our faces, the scent of blossoms in the air, and the sight of the trees in full bloom created a profound sensory experience.
This was a testament to nature's resilience, blooming amidst the gloom, and a personal reminder of the beauty found in the face of adversity.

Otabashi Bridge: Tranquility Amidst Urban Vibrancy
During my recent visit to the bustling city, I discovered the hidden gem of Otabashi Bridge (太田橋) and was instantly captivated by its charm. Nestled amidst the urban landscape, the bridge offered a peaceful retreat that connected me to nature and history in a way I never anticipated.
As I strolled along the bridge, I marveled at the elegant wooden structure and the tranquil river flowing beneath. The serene atmosphere was accentuated by the lush foliage and gentle whispers of the wind, providing a stark contrast to the city's energetic pace.
While crossing Otabashi Bridge, I couldn't help but feel a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this rare blend of modernity and tradition. The juxtaposition of the ancient bridge against the contemporary skyline reminded me of the delicate balance that exists between progress and preservation.
Reflecting on my visit to Otabashi Bridge, I am left with cherished memories of a tranquil oasis that provided a momentary respite from the urban jungle, rekindling my appreciation for the harmonious coexistence of past and present.

Embracing Serenity at Sakurayama Shrine
My enchanting visit to Sakurayama Shrine during the mesmerizing sakura season was nothing short of breathtaking. As I wandered through the lush, cherry blossom-laden pathways, I felt a deep sense of serenity enveloping me. The vibrant pink and white blossoms formed a stunning canopy overhead, giving the shrine a celestial ambiance that was impossible to resist. The gentle rustle of leaves and soothing whispers of prayers filled the air, providing a tranquil escape from the world outside. As I stood before the shrine's sacred grounds, I offered my gratitude, feeling a profound connection to the divine and the beauty of nature. The memories of Sakurayama Shrine during sakura season will be forever etched in my heart as a testament to the harmonious blend of natural splendor and spiritual reverence that graced those unforgettable moments.

Sakura Serenade: Timeless Beauty in Morioka!
During my unforgettable trip to Morioka Castle Ruins in the magical sakura season, I was captivated by the delicate beauty of cherry blossoms that adorned the historic site. As I strolled along the Nakanohashi Bridge, the petals gently fell like pink snowflakes, creating a surreal atmosphere. At the castle ruins, I couldn't help but be in awe of the remnants of once grand walls, gatehouses, and the enchanting pond. Each step through this historic park seemed to reveal a new, picturesque scene, perfect for savoring with my eyes and camera. Reflecting on the experience, I felt the perfect harmony between nature and history, providing a serene escape from the hustle of modern life. The Morioka Castle Ruins during sakura season will forever hold a special place in my heart, not only for its ethereal beauty but also for the rich cultural heritage it represents.

[Morioka Tenmangu Shrine] Cute lion dogs waiting at the end of the hill
I went to Morioka Tenmangu Shrine by bicycle, but it was quite a steep hill and quite hard!
If you are not confident in your stamina, I recommend visiting by foot or car.
The strange but cute lion dogs in the precincts are a specialty of this shrine.
Their humorous expressions are so adorable that you will want to take pictures of them.
In addition, stationery stores on Morioka Boulevard sell goods featuring these cute lion dogs.
The nice thing is that you can take home the warm feeling you felt at the shrine as a souvenir!
Morioka Tenmangu Shrine is a healing spot at the top of the hill. Come and experience the charm of the lion dogs!

Morioka Hachimangu Shrine Trip
Morioka Hachimangu Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture. Previously classified as a prefectural shrine, it is now listed as a special shrine under the Association of Shinto Shrines. It is considered the guardian shrine of Morioka and is known for its traditional events such as the Chagu Chagu Umakko horse festival, the float festival during the annual festival, and the Yabusame horseback archery ritual. The grand shrine pavilion, adorned with vivid carvings and painted in bright vermilion, exudes a dignified presence as the new 'face of Morioka.'
As the largest shrine in the prefecture and a cornerstone of faith and celebrations in people's lives, it continues to attract many visitors throughout the year.
We offer various life ceremonies such as Shinto weddings, Miyamairi (newborn shrine visits), and Shichi-Go-San (celebrations for children aged 3, 5, and 7), as well as prayers, celebrations, and exorcisms. The annual Morioka Hachimangu Grand Festival is also a well-established autumn event in Morioka.
Morioka Castle Ruins
#Great Places in September 2024
The ruins of Morioka Castle were built in 1598. Although there is a castle tower, it was not built due to concerns about the shogunate. Instead, the third-order oar was used as a castle tower. It is characterized by a stone wall made of white granite. However, after the castle was abandoned in the Meiji era, it was Parts of it were dismantled, and most of the remaining buildings were dismantled under the 1871 Abandonment Order and the buildings were old (so today, except for the Sora Hori between Honmaru and Ninomaru, there is basically nothing to see...)
In addition, in front of the Morioka Castle ruins is the Sakurayama Shrine, which was founded in 1749. It is a shrine dedicated to the Nanbu family of the Morioka clan, and there is also a nearly 400-year-old stone-cut cherry tree.

[Morioka, Iwate] Get a souvenir! If you want to eat Wankosoba, come to Azumaya! ✨✨
I went to Azumaya Honten for my first Wankosoba experience!
💞Reasons why I recommend it:
You can eat at your own pace without time limits! If you eat less than 100 bowls, you only get a paper certificate, but since I went to 100 bowls, I got a handprint! It was my first time, so I'm happy to have this souvenir! A treasure! The soba is so delicious that I wasn't confident that I could eat 100 bowls, but I was able to eat it surprisingly easily!
There were many condiments, and the sashimi was also delicious! It was over 4,000 yen, but I was very satisfied with the luxurious menu!
🧑🧑🧒There were also families where only the children had Wankosoba and the parents had a single menu! The other menus looked delicious too!
Preparation ⚠️: Even if you go at the same time as the opening, you need to get a numbered ticket on EPARK instead of just lining up. I arrived at 11:00 and was called around 15:00! The opening hours are 11:00-15:00 and 17:00-19:00, but if you have a numbered ticket, you will be called even after 15:00 and you can eat without being rushed.

[Morioka, Iwate] Exquisite sweets from a soy sauce brewery!
There is a taste that can only be eaten here! Exquisite sweets from a soy sauce brewery! "Kurabiyori" 🍨
💞Reasons for recommendation:
It's next to Azumaya, a famous wankosoba restaurant, so I stopped by while I was waiting! The matcha craft cola was delicious! It was a luxurious taste that you can't get anywhere else! The ice cream is heavy and voluminous, so it's recommended to share one with two people.
About the shop☀️:
This is a soy sauce brewery in Morioka, Iwate, that has been brewing soy sauce since 1914. Inside the store, there are many products (condiments such as miso and dressings) made from excellent local ingredients! It's also recommended for buying souvenirs that you can only get here!

[Morioka] One after another until the lid is closed~♪ A famous Wankosoba restaurant✨
A famous restaurant for Morioka's specialty wankosoba [Azumaya]
It's fun because they call out "Yes, Janjan♪" and "Yes, Dondon♪"❤️
The elegant broth made it delicious to the last bite😋
I heard that the average woman has 30 to 40 bowls,
I wonder if I can do 30?
But then I drank two bottles of beer and changed the flavor with condiments,
and before I knew it, I had 70, 80, 90...
something had blossomed😂
I stopped at 91 bowls so I got a paper certificate,
but apparently if you reach 100 bowls, the ingredients will turn into trees.
The dessert, grapefruit topped with "gozenko," made only from buckwheat flour and sugar, was also delicious, so I recommend leaving a little space in your stomach. lol
At Azumaya, 15 bowls is about the same amount as one bamboo sieve😊
You can sit with people who order the regular menu.
Reservations can only be made at the main store and the Otesaki store.
I definitely recommend making a reservation before you go.

This is a photo from when I rented a car from Sendai to Morioka! I left Sendai in the morning, made some detours while driving, and arrived in Morioka at night! The roads in Tohoku were wide and easy to drive on. I couldn't enter the Red Brick Building of the Bank of Iwate because it was after business hours 😢 I went there in July, and the weather was cool and pleasant. The hydrangeas were still in bloom!! The next day, I was planning to cross Iwate Prefecture and head towards the sea, so I ate Morioka ramen and slept at the hotel!
[Iwate] When traveling to Iwate, Asaichi is a popular bakery♡
I got on the 6am Shinkansen in Tokyo and arrived at Morioka Station at 8am♡
I went to Fukuda Pan, which I'd heard was popular, to get some breakfast☺️
It takes more than 15 minutes to walk from Morioka Station,
but it's about 3 minutes by car (^^)
There are a few parking spaces, but not many, so I parked in a paid parking lot!
It's 100 yen for 30 minutes, and it's almost next door, so it's fine! That's how I felt♪
There were already quite a few customers lined up, so I waited a little over 20 minutes✌️
But the bread was big and fluffy!
It was good value for money, so I'm glad I lined up! That's how I felt💕

The Miracle Tree: Exploring the Natural Wonder of Morioka's Ishiwarizakura
In Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture, Japan, I visited the famous Ishiwarizakura, a miracle tree that showcases the power and beauty of nature. I took seven photos to document this amazing visit.
The Ishiwarizakura is a cherry blossom tree growing in the crevices of a massive rock, a unique landscape that amazes with the strength and resilience of nature. As I entered the courtyard where the Ishiwarizakura is located, I was immediately captivated by the magnificent sight of the tree. The massive rock has been split by the roots of the cherry tree, creating a spectacular natural scene.
When the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, the beauty of the Ishiwarizakura reaches its peak. Pink flowers cover the entire tree, contrasting sharply with the surrounding rocks, like a natural painting. During my visit, which coincided with the cherry blossom season, I was filled with joy and wonder at the sight of this miracle tree in full bloom.
Around the Ishiwarizakura, I found many tourists and locals who had come to admire this extraordinary tree. Everyone was taking photos to capture the beauty and miracle of nature. I also took pictures of these beautiful scenes, hoping to share this astonishing natural wonder with everyone.
Besides the cherry blossoms, the courtyard where the Ishiwarizakura is located is also very peaceful and beautiful. The area is shaded by green trees and lush with flowers and plants, creating a harmonious and tranquil atmosphere. I strolled here, feeling the power and beauty of nature, and my heart was filled with immense peace and pleasure.
This visit to the Ishiwarizakura not only allowed me to appreciate the magnificent natural scenery but also made me feel the resilience of life and the miracle of nature. I will forever treasure these wonderful memories and look forward to returning here in the future to explore more of nature's beauty.
Morioka Iwate Bank Red Brick Building: The perfect combination of history and architecture
In Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture, Japan, I visited the famous Iwate Bank Red Brick Building, a landmark building full of history and architectural beauty. I took twenty photos to record this enlightening visit.
The Iwate Bank Red Brick Building was built in 1911 and is a building with important historical significance. Walking into the Red Brick Pavilion, I was immediately attracted by its unique architectural style and exquisite design. This building combines Western architectural style and traditional Japanese elements, with a magnificent appearance and exquisite and gorgeous interior decoration.
While touring the museum, I learned about the history of the building and the stories behind it. The red brick building was originally the head office of the Iwate Bank and has witnessed the economic development and historical changes of Morioka City. The museum displays many precious historical relics and photos, introducing in detail the development of the bank and the local economic history.
What particularly impressed me was the architectural details and decorative art in the red brick pavilion. The ceilings, walls and stairs in the museum are full of artistic atmosphere, and every detail reflects the designer's careful conception and superb skills. I took photos of these beautiful architectural details and hope to share the beauty of this combination of history and art with everyone.
The surroundings of the Red Brick Pavilion are also very beautiful, with tree-lined courtyards and a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for walking and relaxing. I walked here, admiring the beautiful scenery around me, and felt extremely peaceful and happy inside.
This visit to the Iwate Bank Red Brick Building not only allowed me to appreciate the magnificent architectural landscape, but also allowed me to understand the history and culture of Morioka City. I will cherish this wonderful memory forever and look forward to coming here again in the future to explore more history and beauty. #wateBankRed Brick Hall #Morioka City #Historical Building #Architectural Beauty #Travel Memories
