One day tour to Uji
#100 Ways to Travel
As a matcha lover, the first thing I thought of was Uji or Shizuoka. I happened to buy a cheap flight ticket to Kansai, so I decided to take this trip🧳
Uji Station is less than 30 minutes’ drive from Kyoto Station. There are attractions such as Byodo-in Temple, Uji Shrine, and Uji River nearby to visit, and there are also many authentic Uji Matcha teas to eat! One of the most recommended is Nakamura Tokichi! After eating it, I felt really good👍🏻I recommend it to everyone!

A short train ride from Kyoto, Uji is a beautiful riverside town known for its historic temples, tea ceremonies and boat trips. There are many things to do in Uji, Kyoto.
📌 Byodoin Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, you may have a strange sense of deja vu when you first visit Byodoin Temple – this is because Byodoin temple features on the reverse of the Japanese 10 Yen coin.
📌 River Uji Walk, simply stunning with beautiful bridges, boats and a stunning hill landscape all around.
📌 Ujigami-jinja Shrine, much smaller in size than Byodoin Temple, Uji shrine is one of the oldest shrine in Japan and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site temple.
📌 13 Storey Pagoda / Jusanju Sekito, an iconic landmark of Uji is said to be the tallest stone pagoda in Japan.
🍦🍵Byodo-In Omotesando Street, best street for souvenir shopping and restaurants. Prime spot to get Matcha tea and Matcha tea ice cream.

Kyoto, Japan - World Cultural Heritage: Uji Byodo-in Temple
The most famous attraction in Uji is the #Byodo-in Temple, which specializes in large-scale blockbusters, especially the #Phoenix Hall that stands on the island in the middle of the lake. It houses the seated statue of Amida Tathagata. It is modeled after the palace in Paradise, with vermilion carved beams and painted pillars, presenting a luxurious and magnificent palace. Pure land world. A pair of gold and bronze phoenixes stand on both ends of the eaves of the nave, wanting to fly high, hence the name Phoenix Hall.
Byodo-in is a representative building of the Heian period in Japan. The 10-yen yen note is engraved with Byodo-in, and the phoenix on the 10,000-yen bill is the same phoenix on the roof, which shows the importance of Byodo-in.
The entire Byodo-in Temple is mainly composed of the island in the middle of the lake, the Phoenix Hall, the garden, and the Phoenix Pavilion. The route goes around the lake. You can stay for about an hour to walk around and take photos. The lake reflects the reflection of the Phoenix Hall, and the sea of trees on both sides, coupled with the blue sky and white clouds, makes it impossible to leave without taking 100 photos. Finally, leave half an hour to visit the Phoenix Hall.
The admission fee for Byodo-in Temple is ¥700. To visit the Phoenix Hall, you need to purchase an additional ¥300 ticket. Each escalator is limited to 50 people, and each escalator lasts 20 minutes. The tour guide is in Japanese, and photos are not allowed inside. It is recommended that after entering Byodo-in Temple, you can go to the ticket office on the right to reserve a guided tour of the Phoenix Hall in one hour. The visit time will be printed on the ticket.
After taking pictures of the exterior and garden of Phoenix Hall, it will be easier to visit inside without wasting time waiting. Finally, we can visit the indoor Fengxiang Pavilion to see the national treasures and enjoy the air-conditioning (photography is not allowed inside the pavilion).
The Fengxiang Pavilion is a museum built in the later period. It is a building with an above-ground glass structure and underground collections. There are many national treasures in the museum. In addition to the Brahma Bell and the golden and bronze phoenix, there are 26 statues of the Bodhisattva in the Clouds, and some are listed as important. The eleven-faced statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva is a cultural property.
In short, I highly recommend a visit to Uji. Visit Byodo-in Temple, Ujigami Shrine or the Tale of Genji Museum, eat the famous Uji matcha, and then relax by the Uji River. The whole trip is a leisurely trip that is very close to nature.

Moutain
One of the most iconic temples of Japan
I've got a story to share about my recent trip to Japan, more specifically, a little gem called Byodoin Temple in Uji.
So, after a quick train ride from Kyoto, my sister and I found ourselves in Uji. Our stomachs were grumbling, so we refueled with a scrumptious lunch before diving into the temple experience.
Byodoin Temple, folks, is a bona fide icon of Japan. The architecture was mind-blowing, with intricate details that seemed to whisper tales of centuries past. We explored the stunning Phoenix Hall, which stood tall and proud amidst a picturesque pond. The tranquil atmosphere made it a perfect spot to reflect and find some inner peace.
Visiting Byodoin Temple was one of the highlights of our Japanese escapade. It's a place that not only showcases Japan's rich history but also nourishes the soul. We even bought Omikuji to commemorate our visit to this place!

Uji Matcha Street
Kansai Travel
Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture
It is recommended that you come and take a walk
Even the train seats are matcha colored.
The whole street is filled with matcha specialty shops
Every shop is antique
There's actually a Starbucks here too
Of course it’s also a matcha theme store
After visiting Matcha Street
Just walk a little further and you'll be there.
Japan’s famous Byodo-in Temple
There is also a museum inside
beautiful scenery
It makes people feel relaxed and refreshed after walking around
I just sigh that there is not enough time.
How I wish I could stay a few more days

Visiting one of the world heritage sites called “Byodoin” in Kyoto, Japan. The collaboration of the red from the gorgeous ancient building and the blue from sky is superb. Lotus Reflected in the Sun: The Tranquil Moments at Byodo-in Temple
In the early winter sunlight filtering through thin clouds, I strolled through the ancient garden of Byodo-in Temple, feeling as if I were in a serene painting. Passing through the vermilion Phoenix Hall, one can sense the accumulation of a thousand years of time. The exquisite architecture is reflected in the pond, blooming like a lotus, serene and transcendent.
By the pond, a gentle breeze stirs, creating ripples on the water's surface. The sunlight and reflections blend together, creating a dreamlike scene. Looking at the roof of the Phoenix Hall from a distance, the two phoenixes seem ready to take flight, silently conveying blessings to the sky. The red leaves by the pond have not yet fallen, their fiery red and golden hues complementing the ancient architecture, adding a touch of warmth.
Entering the Phoenix Hall, I gazed up at the statue of Amitabha Buddha. The compassionate and serene expression inspires reverence. Despite the passage of time, the murals and carvings inside the hall still emit a brilliant artistic glow, telling the story of the prosperity and steadfast faith of the Heian period. Byodo-in Temple is not only an embodiment of beauty but also a place for one to have a dialogue with their inner self.

Right outside Byodo-in is Omotesando, a shopping street where you can taste famous matcha, enjoy matcha ice cream, and buy Uji-exclusive souvenirs. At the end of the street is Uji Bridge, which spans the Uji River and is another must-visit photo spot. 👍🏼💯📷

We visited Byodo-In Temple because we rented a car. Upon entering the temple grounds, we came across a large cemetery with several sections, including cemeteries for the Chinese, Japanese, and others. The cemetery is beautiful and spacious. The entrance fee is 4 yen for senior citizens and 5 yen for adults, and is payable by credit card only. The visit was well worth it because it was a very peaceful temple. We spent a short time there, about 45 minutes, including bathroom breaks. There is a small souvenir shop, and you can buy 2 yen bags of fish food to feed the koi. The highlight of the visit was the ringing of a giant bell with a log. It seems to be used to clear the mind and clear the mind. We each rang the bell twice because the sound of the giant bell was very relaxing. After visiting the temple, we drove to the botanical garden, which is free to enter, in less than 10 minutes. We drove around the garden and saw the viewpoints. Both visits were very worthwhile and enjoyable.

Byodo-in Temple in Uji/Map of 10 yen and over 10,000 yen
#100 Ways to Travel
The entire atmosphere and houses in Uji are very old-fashioned, which fits my image of Kyoto as a classic, quiet and comfortable. It is famous for the Tale of Origin and Matcha. Byodo-in is the most representative building, which expresses the ancient Japanese's yearning for the paradise world of the West and is a world heritage.
If you pay attention to the 10 yen and 10,000 yen, you will find that they are the Byodo-in building and the phoenix on the Phoenix Hall respectively. Phoenix Hall is the main building of Byodo-in Temple, enshrining a nearly 3-meter-high wooden Buddha with a long history.
There is an exhibition about the Phoenix Hall in the Byodoin Temple Museum, which is very exciting.
Ticket: 700 yen
Additional purchase at Phoenix Hall: 300 yen (Japanese speaking guide)
Tips:
💫You will understand the entire exhibition after entering the Phoenix Hall and then looking at the exhibition. Photography is not allowed.

Byodo-in Temple, with nearly a thousand years of history, is one of Japan's most representative World Heritage sites. Ujigami Shrine, the oldest shrine in Japan, is also listed as a World Heritage site, and every beam and pillar is considered a national treasure.
The representative building within Byodo-in, the Phoenix Hall (originally named Amida Hall), houses an approximately 8-meter-tall statue of Amitabha Tathagata, carved by the famous Heian-era Buddhist master Jocho. The walls and pillars around it are vividly painted with images of heavenly beings, phoenixes, and arabesque patterns, decorating the hall as if it were a magnificent and dreamy Pure Land.
The image of Byodo-in on the Japanese 10-yen coin and the phoenix on the 10,000-yen note are both from Byodo-in in Uji, Kyoto.
Ujigami Shrine was built in the year 313 and has a history of over 1,700 years. The shrine's grounds are rich in historical and cultural significance, and it houses many of Japan's important cultural properties.
