Where to go on weekends 023|The former residence of Hu Xueyan, a red-roofed businessman in the late Qing Dynasty!
#100 Ways to Travel
Hangzhou has a long history and has many cultural relics. Among them is the former residence of Hu Xueyan, a red-roofed businessman in the late Qing Dynasty. His miraculous experience of rising from a humble servant to a first-rank official is amazing, but after reading the biography, you won’t be too surprised. Unexpectedly, his achievements are worth learning from business people👍
The former residence is located near Hefang Street, opposite the Deoksugung Palace left over from the Southern Song Dynasty. From a distance, you can see the towering white exterior walls and dark gray bricks on the roof. At first glance, it looks like an Anhui-style building, which is very different from the typical Jiangsu and Zhejiang buildings.
The appearance of the entire former residence is very low-key, which is far from the financial resources of his wealthy country. Even the carvings on the windows and doors are simple and plain, which is very different from the exquisite and complicated styles in Jiangsu and Zhejiang. The scale of the rockery garden is also far smaller than the well-known Humble Administrator's Garden. The only low-key reveal The financial resources are probably all kinds of furniture, such as rosewood, beech, rosewood, etc., which are very expensive at first glance.
The itinerary can be arranged with Deoksugung Palace, the ruins of the Southern Song Dynasty, and the Hangzhou Museum of Art. Afterwards, have dinner at Hefang Street and then walk around. The half-day itinerary is perfect❤️

Xueyan Former Residence Hangzhou
Hold it....Not done with Hangzhou yet.. After the brief tour of the Hupao spring, I realised I had a lot of time to kill... so, I headed to the former residence of Hi Xueyan.. Let's be honest, didn't know what to expect since it was my friends idea.. I assumed we will just be glancing at a lot of walls but I was so wrong...
Getting There - Still lazy and trying to maximise sights per day, so a didi as usual... it took about 30 minutes drive from the Hupao spring. it is located at 18 YuanBao street, Shangcheng district, hangzhou
Just like before.. QR code scan to book entry, costs 20 rmb for the residence alone.
Attractions - Simply amazing to watch how the detailed design and nature coexisted in the residence.. you get a tour of the garden, courtyards, halls... lots of stone carvings and passages..
Food & Restaurants - There is a stop shop where you can grab cold drinks, cup noodles, some snacks.. this was a needed store as it was rather hot..
Shopping - vending machine for souvenirs..
This took about 1. 5 hours overall... Probably now is a good time to grab lunch (but no... heading on to Lingyun Temple..

Former residence of Hu Xueyan, located in Hefang Street of Hangzhou City and Yuanbao Street in the east of Dajing Lane Historical and Cultural Protection Area, was built in the 11th year of Qing Tongzhi (1872), at the peak of Hu Xueyan's career.
At that time, the mansion project lasted for 3 years and was completed in 1875. The completed former residence is a beautiful mansion with Chinese traditional architectural features and Western architectural style. The whole building is long and wide in the north and south, covering an area of 10.8 mu and a building area of 5,815 square meters.
Former residences, whether from the building or from the furnishings of the interior furniture, the use of materials, can be called the first luxury home of Chinese giants in the late Qing Dynasty.
This Hu Xueyan private house covers an area of 7,230 square meters. It starts from Niuyangsi Lane in the east, Yuanbao Street in the south, Yuanjing Lane in the west and Wangjiang Road in the north. The surrounding walls are towering into the sky. It is rumored to be made of glutinous rice soup, which is as solid as cement and can be fireproof and waterproof.
The whole house is designed as a typical Jiangnan garden-style mansion in the late Qing Dynasty. It is magnificent and luxurious. The materials used are a lot of precious red sandalwood, rosewood, nanmu, ginkgo, rosewood and Araucaria. And Chinese , fine workmanship, exquisite carving and exquisite, to achieve no product is not refined, tangible and beautiful. I also invited foreign technicians to install telephones that were not available at the Shanghai Shili Ocean. At the same time, I introduced a series of the latest new arrivals, such as large mirrors, water tassel chandeliers, and western colored glass.
The park has a high-rise, cloister, pavilion, pool, and rockery. The exquisite and large-scale artificial caves are the first in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

Here only Hu Xueyan's main house and his mother can enter and exit at will, other uncles are not allowed to enter here without approval. The garden is not very big, but the pavilions are the ultimate exquisite.

The former residence of Hu Xueyan is located in Yuanbao Street, Xihu District, Hangzhou City. The appearance is simple, but there is no hole in the inside. This is also the traditional style of Huizhou businessmen.
Although the appearance is simple, the interior decoration and decoration are extremely luxurious. It is said that this mansion took a total of three years to complete. The potted plants, rockeries, small lakes, pavilions, arch bridges and Xuanyuan in the former residence of Hu Xueyan create poetry, and the window glass is Nanyang style.
According to expert appraisal, the original building of Hu Xueyan's former residence was built with precious materials such as ginkgo, nanmu, rosewood, rosewood, araucaria, Chinese eucalyptus, etc. It is estimated that the overall cost is above 500,000 two silver, and only the rockery consumes silver. About 100,000 two. The landscape of this mansion is different in four seasons, and the delicate structure reflects the owner's emotions.

Encounter the ultimate aesthetics of our ancestors by West Lake
This should be my third time exploring the "luxurious" residence of Hu Xueyan, a red-topped businessman in the late Qing Dynasty 🏠.
This mansion truly bears witness to his legendary life of "success and failure, all in vain." Entering from Zhiyuan, the courtyard is compactly arranged and well-proportioned, fully displaying Hu Xueyan's aesthetic taste 👍🏻. The garden combines the gentle and delicate style of Jiangnan gardens with grandeur, surpassing even the Humble Administrator's Garden in Suzhou, making it an excellent place to appreciate the beauty of late Qing classical gardens. 😊
📸 Sightseeing and photography
🩵 The rockery, pond, pavilions, and towers in Zhiyuan are well-proportioned. It is recommended to wear new Chinese-style clothing or Hanfu.
💙 The Hundred Lions Building and the winding corridor are also excellent choices for photography.

With such a high wall, one can tell at a glance that it must be a deep house compound.
With such a high wall, one can tell at a glance that it must be a deep house compound. Hu Xueyan's former residence was built in the 11th year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1872) and is located on Yuanbao Street, Hangzhou. It was completed in the first year of Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1875) and took three years.
In the eleventh year of Guangxu's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1885), Hu Xueyan passed away. After that, Hu Xueyan's family home and Hu Qingyutang were purchased at a low price by the Manchu powerful Wen Yu.
In the third year of Xuantong in the Qing Dynasty (1911), the Revolution of 1911 was victorious. The Zhejiang military government confiscated the property of Manchu bureaucrats, and Hu Xueyan's former residence was the first to bear the brunt. After that, it was occupied by the warlord government. After the Republic of China, warlords continued to fight, and the former residence was occupied by the army, and its property, furnishings and components were looted and resold.
In the 13th year of the Republic of China (1934), Jiang Yizhen, director of the Industrial Bank, acquired the former residence as a shareholder and acquired the ownership of Hu Qingyutang and Hu Zhai at the same time. Since then, the former residence has been owned by the Chiang family.

Top Chinese merchant’s Residence
Hu Xueyan’s Former Residence is a beautiful place to visit for its stunning Chinese architecture and garden composed of zigzag bridges, luxurious mansions and elegant pavilions. The karst cave in the garden is deemed as the largest manmade in China. Lush green plants, beautiful flowers and fish in the pools make the garden such a charming place!
Hu Xueyan was a successful merchant during the Qing Dynasty. Big brain and hardworking, his business was expanded in various fields such as silk, medicine and real estate. He also had a high position in Hangzhou’s civil and financial administration. HuqingYutang, his traditional Chinese medicine shop is still operating nowadays in Hefang Street, not too far from the his Former Residence.

How to go - I got off at Ding’an Road (定安路地铁站)line 1 metro 🚇 station and walked to the entrance for about 15 mins. If you don’t want to walk, you can easily grab a Hello Bike near the station and cycle to the entrance. Check the way on your maps. I use Gaode Ditu (胡雪岩旧居)

Before I came, I heard that Hu Xueyans former residence had the largest false mountain cave in China. Seeing the small hole between the rockery in the picture below, I mistakenly thought that it was the legendary cave. How to see how small it feels pitiful. Haha, I am making a joke! This is a rockery, there is no cave. The legendary cave is in the garden.
Hades.
There are trails on the side of the pool that lead directly to the rockery. There is a small hole under the rockery, and it is a legendary rock cave. The space inside the cave was very wide, because it was too dark and the ground was relatively slippery, so I didn't go any further.
Hades.
Hu Xueyans former residence has a ticket office at the back door of the front door, and all can go in, but if you buy a network ticket, you must enter from the main entrance. From the main entrance, there is a model map of the former residence of Hu Xueyan, and the TV on the wall also plays a simple introduction to the former residence. If there is enough time, it is recommended to listen to the introduction and then go shopping is more targeted.
Hades.
This is the room of the Hu family. There is also a set of copper megaphones, which is the current telephone. The switchboard is in the room of Hu Xueyan. There is a branch line in each room of the wife. There is also one person here to facilitate the dispatch.
