2024 Toyako Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in December)
Toyako Lake is located in the southwestern part of Hokkaido and belongs to the Tozan National Park. The volcano erupted frequently in the early 20th century and formed the lake after it was trapped. Because Donghu Lake is relatively wide, the outer mountain is relatively low from the lake, only 200 to 500 meters, so it gives a very broad feeling. Near the lakeshore is the Showa Shinzan, a new terrain that was raised in the fault caused by the earthquake in 1943, and still emits white smoke. There is the famous Toyako Onsen on the caldera lake, which is one of the few hot spring resorts in Hokkaido.

This is a sweets shop located on Lake Toya, with a view of Mt. Yotei.
It's located along the Toya National Highway and very close to the Silo Observatory, so we recommend visiting both!

Early bird maple viewing in Japan, route reference! .
During Japan’s maple leaf season, Hokkaido is the first to start turning red! If you want to see Japanese early maple leaves in advance, you can start from Hokkaido! 🤔 It is recommended that friends who go to Hokkaido for the first time can use the surrounding area of Sapporo as a gathering point, such as the Hokkaido autumn classic IP Biei Aoike, the maple viewing holy place Hosuikyo Dam and Jozankei Futami Park, the red leaves of Lake Toya, and other places. The Otaru Canal famous for "Love Letter"...

The maple leaf season in the Kansai region is generally from November to mid-December. First of all, Arashiyama in Kyoto has mountains, lakes and canyons, and red and yellow leaves are all over the mountains. Just think about it and get perfect marks! And the red leaves on the Sagano Train are really painting-like~ (⚠️The No. 5 internet-famous glass car offers a 360° panoramic view of the gorgeous autumn scenery of the mountains). In the Arashiyama area of Kyoto, in addition to taking the train, rafting on the Hozu River is also a good way to chase maples.

Hokkaido|Lake hill farm: Toya Lakeside Garden Ranch Ice Cream, a leisurely family food attraction
"Lake Hill Farm" is a ranch located in southern Hokkaido. Because it is located on a highland, it can overlook Lake Toya and the magnificent scenery of Mount Yotei in the distance. The hinterland of the pasture is vast, and the cows can grow healthily in the spacious environment. Visitors can also enjoy the scenery of the cattle grazing. There are shops and cafes in the ranch. The high-quality Italian handmade ice cream made from freshly squeezed milk is moderately sweet and delicious, and is very popular among tourists. The cafe also offers a lunch menu and homemade desserts, including puddings and cream puffs that use high amounts of milk. You can enjoy a relaxing afternoon tea here and savor the nature and beauty of the ranch.
Hokkaido in August is very beautiful, with colorful flowers everywhere, and a large garden is planted in front of Lake Hill Farm. The store is divided into two buildings, AB. Building A provides pizza, puffs and other light meals, while building B It sells ice cream. There are many parking lots on site, and there are quite a lot of tourists here.
There are about 20 different flavors of ice cream to choose from in the store, such as vanilla, pumpkin, mille-feuille pie, rum raisin, blueberry milk, etc. There are many varieties, and there will be several local ones that are not written on the menu. Seasonally limited flavors, such as Hokkaido cantaloupe on this trip. The menu is in Chinese. In addition to the description of the flavors, the ordering instructions are also written. If you don't understand Japanese, you can just pick it up and compare it with your hands. There is no difficulty.

Attractions - Lake Toya
Onsen with a Breathtaking View of Lake Tōya
Lake Toya is a must-visit destination in Hokkaido during winter. It not only boasts a magnificent scenery but also features one of the world`s most unique natural occurrences - its lake never freezes during winter. This is due to the stratovolcano, Mount Usu, around the lake. Very interesting isn't it?
There are many things to do in Lake Toya, and the best decision we made was to go for Onsen. We have Onsen in Singapore but it's an entirely different experience to do it in winter. When temperature dips to sub zero, the cold never truly leaves you, regardless of the number of layers you wear. Onsen becomes a source of warmth, comfort and relief. We felt so so blessed then, the feeling was indescribable.
Things to note: There are public and private Onsen. Strict rules must be followed at the public hot spring baths - tattoos, photography and the use of bath towels are prohibited. For private ones, there are no restrictions. We stayed at Toyako Manseikaku. It has the perfect view of the lake and a public Onsen. We also made frequent trips to their in-house café as the views from there are exceptional! Starting from SGD$200 per night, guests can enjoy their Onsen for free and complimentary buffet breakfast for two. If you prefer privacy, you can also book a private spa at Nonokaze Resort for just SGD$33 per 50 minutes.
1. Toyako Manseikaku
Address - 21 Toyako Onsen, Toyako-cho, Abuta-gun, Hokkaido
Getting there - Sapporo Station ⇔ Hotel Shuttle Bus
[Express Toya] (1,100 yen per person for one way
2,200 yen per person round trip). Need to book in advance.
2. Nonokaze Resort
Address - 29-1 Toyakoonsen, Toyako, Abuta District, Hokkaido
Getting there - There is a hotel shuttle bus that operates to and from JR Sapporo and New Chitose Airport. It is free from JR Sapporo Station and costs 1000 yen one way from New Chitose Airport. Need to book in advance.

Strolling along Lake Toya
#celebratewithtrip
Lake Toya was born more than 110,000 years ago following a huge volcanic eruption. We took our time for a relaxing long stroll along the lake. There are a lot of very nice modern sculptures along the way.
Lake Toya (洞爺湖) is one of the best hot spring towns in Japan for budget travelers. The combination of many free hot spring facilities, cheap bus routes and some super cheap accommodation makes the place stand out from the others.

We randomly stopped by this gelato shop when we drove on the way back to Lake Toya. The gelato is super nice.
I recommend this place if you have a chance to visit Hokkaido area especially Toya to enjoy the amazing beautiful scenery while eat some tasty Gelato Ice Cream. There are many kinds of various flavors Ice cream. So you can choose it whatever flavors what you wanted. In the season you can view many different Hokkaido flowers.

One of the best ONSEN hotels near Lake Toya!
There is free shuttle bus service from Sapporo station to the hotel! The view from the rooms is just impeccable, breathtaking! They have indoor and outdoor ONSEN baths. They have so many different baths and they’re incredible. The beds are also very comfortable and the rooms are nice and clean. It’s really fun to experience soaking in ONSEN bath whilst it was snowing. I really love this stay! #onsenhotel
Around Lake Toya - flat view from lakeside .
Easy to navigate around. every few hundreds meter you will find some interesting spot for pictures
Showa Shinzhan Bear ranch is a place to view many big brown bears.
There are vending machines around the park where one can purchase to feed the bears. Not the friendliest animal that you can pat or touch, you will be able to watch their daily activity from top down view.
I guess now the bears are more protected that letting them roaming outside .
worth visiting if you are going to the Mount Usu next to it via Usuzan Ropeway as side trip.#bucketlistreboot
Stunning views from Lake Toya Nonokaze
Lake Toya is argubly the most scenic spa resort in Hokkaido. With its paranomic views of the scenic Lake Toya from the upscale hotel resort, its well worth splurging for a magical night here just to have a wonderful experience in Lake Toya, Japan.
There are both Japanese and Western style rooms available at the resort and we chose the Western style room which comes with a king bed. If you choose the Japanese style, it comes with a futon bed.
We booked a free shuttle from JR Sapporo Station to get to the hotel and it was relatively fuss free to get there.
The hotel restaurant has wonderful views of Lake Toya as well while you dine from the restaurant, which is very relaxing.

Toyako Onsen & Sairo Observatory
📍Hokkaido
Toyako Onsen and Sairo Observatory, which I visited during my trip to Sapporo
✔️There is a 100th anniversary monument at Toyako Onsen, and you can see the four islands created by volcanic activity up close, and you can also look down on the four islands from Sairo Observatory.
✔️It is said that it erupted four times in the 20th century, but there were casualties up to the third time,
and the fourth time, a prediction system was put into operation, so there were no casualties at all.

Top pick for a Hokkaido vacation: The Windsor Hotel Toya Resort & Spa.
In my mind, the top Hokkaido vacation hotel is The Windsor Hotel Toya Resort & Spa (it also has a super cool name - the Floor-to-Ceiling Window Hotel, because the hotel is full of floor-to-ceiling windows 😎).
The hotel is located on a mountain top by Lake Toya, with the sea on one side and Lake Toya on the other. No matter which direction you look, the scenery is breathtaking 🤩. The hotel's hot spring has an outdoor hot spring, and soaking in the hot spring on a snowy day is an amazing experience.
There are plenty of restaurant options, including a Michelin-starred French restaurant and a Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant. Western-style breakfast is served at the Michelin-starred French restaurant, while Japanese-style breakfast is a traditional Japanese breakfast set. You can make a reservation for dinner at the front desk and pay when you check out.
I recommend staying for two nights so you can try both types of breakfast. The outdoor hot spring alternates between men and women every day, so if you stay for two nights, both men and women in your party can experience the outdoor hot spring (if you only stay for one night, it's okay, the changeover is already done in the morning, so you can experience it in the morning 😉).
It's also close to the ski resorts, about a 30-minute drive to Niseko and Rusutsu. There is also a shuttle bus at the JR station at Lake Toya, so you can take the JR to the hotel.
Lake Toya, Hokkaido - a masterpiece of nature.
Lake Toya is a caldera lake formed by volcanic activity. The circumference of the lake is about 50 km, and the surface area is about 70.7 square kilometers. The lake is very clear, offering beautiful scenery.
Lake Toya is the center of Shikotsu-Toya National Park and the ninth largest lake in Japan. It is a nearly circular caldera lake formed by a massive volcanic eruption about 110,000 years ago.
There are four islands in the lake formed by volcanic eruptions, the largest of which is Oshima Island, which can be reached by sightseeing boat. The southwest shore is lined with inns and hotels in Toyako Onsen, the main departure point for buses and sightseeing boats.
Lake Toya is listed as a Japanese Geopark and a Global Geopark, and has been selected as one of the "100 Scenic Spots of Japan" and "100 New Japanese Travel Destinations". There are many tourist attractions in the surrounding area. Representative attractions include Toyako Onsen, Showa Shinzan, and Mount Usu. Toyako Onsen is located on the lakeside, where you can enjoy the hot springs while enjoying the lake view, making it a popular attraction. The mountain and lake scenery formed by Showa Shinzan, Mount Usu, and Mount Yotei in the distance is known as one of the three major landscapes of Hokkaido.
At Lake Toya, you can enjoy a variety of activities. A cruise on the lake is one of the most popular activities, where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the four seasons. In addition, there are water sports such as kayaking, boating, and fishing in the lake area, where you can enjoy the charm of nature.
In winter, you can experience skiing and snowboarding in the surrounding mountains, and the charm of Lake Toya is that you can experience a variety of activities in different seasons.
I didn’t expect that the 5-day trip to Japan would be so promising.
