🌏✨This month, I was honored to join #D4N2024 in Colombo, Sri Lanka—a remarkable gathering of policymakers, experts, students, and practitioners across South Asia who came together to connect the dots across systems to improve diets and nutrition in the region. The evidence and insights shared over those three days showed us the potential to move the needle toward positive nutrition outcomes. The challenge now lies in answering the "how"—how can we synergize actions across food systems to deliver results, minimize trade-offs, bridge inequalities, and ensure no one is left behind? I closed the conference with an important message: The cost of inaction is more than the cost of action. The work we do today is not just for the present but creates lasting impacts for generations. Our investments, priorities, and actions must reflect the values they hold for the future. Congratulations to the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the 30 co-hosts for organizing such a meaningful event. Thank you to everyone who participated, in person or virtually. I look forward to #D4N2025 and possibly, expanding this dialogue to other regions. 🌍 Reflections on the first talks of the session: "Gender and Social Inclusion" in South Asia #D4N2024 We are inspired by impactful discussions on gender and social inclusion across South Asia. These presentations shine a spotlight on how deeply gender dynamics shape social and economic realities in the region. 💡 Naomi Saville (UCL) Adolescent girls in remote mountain communities face the most severe dietary inadequacies, with low intakes of essential nutrients like calcium, riboflavin, and iron. The extreme inequalities between girls, children, and adults call for gender-transformative social and behavioural change to ensure fairer access to nutrition. 💪 Archis Banerjee (International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) Archis shared fascinating data on how household tasks and aspirations are shaped by gender norms. In rural communities, boys often take on farm roles, while girls shoulder caregiving and food preparation. These roles become even more pronounced in the absence of adult males. Tackling these disparities requires challenging traditional task divisions and fostering equitable opportunities for both boys and girls. 🌱 Tanaya DuttaGupta (International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) Tanaya’s research revealed how social protection programs – even those not designed with climate in mind – have supported women’s resilience during cyclones. Nutrition education stood out as a game-changer, empowering women with knowledge they share in their communities. The findings highlight the need for nutrition-sensitive social protection that engages both women and men to drive shared decision-making and equitable outcomes. Together, these presentations underscore the intersections of gender, nutrition, and resilience in South Asia. Transformative change will require us to confront entrenched norms, prioritize education, and tailor interventions to the unique challenges faced by women and girls. #GenderEquality #Social #Inclusion #Resilience #Nutrition #D4N2024 #SouthAsia IFPRI-Bangladesh

🌾 How can agriculture reshape nutrition in rural Bangladesh? Olivier Ecker International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) shares a simulation model showing: ✅ Better diets: More poultry, eggs, and pulses ❌ Trade-offs: Less sugar, tea, and coffee 💡 Growth in ag value chains, prices + consumer preferences drive these changes. . #FoodSystems #Nutrition #Agriculture #SouthAsia IFPRI-Bangladesh
