BUILDING REGIONAL RESILIENCE THROUGH STRENGTHENED METEOROLOGICAL, HYDROLOGICAL AND CLIMATE SERVICES IN THE INDIAN OCEAN COMMISSION (IOC) MEMBER COUNTRIES (HYDROMET) 🌍 We are pleased to share an update from the annual steering committee of the HYDROMET programme, which took place on 10-11 October 2024 in Antananarivo, Madagascar. AESA, along with our expert team, proudly represented our efforts in advancing climate resilience in the Indian Ocean region. 🌊 The HYDROMET programme aims to address the vulnerabilities of IOC member countries – Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, and Seychelles – which are highly susceptible to weather and climate hazards such as floods, droughts, storms, tropical cyclones, and storm surges. The programme is built around three core objectives: 1. Strengthening institutional capacities and fostering regional cooperation to deliver high-quality climate services, while exploring public-private partnerships.🤝 2. Improving climate data quality, multi-risk forecasts, and enhancing climate risk assessments through Scientific Advisory Panels (SAP). ✨ 3. Enhancing the accessibility and use of climate services to support adaptation efforts, disaster risk reduction, and multi-hazard early warning systems at the end-users level.🌱 AESA is contracted by the Indian Ocean Commission to provide technical assistance, PMU support, and regional coordination for the programme, with an overall funding over $70 million USD to support the region. The committee meeting brought together representatives from the AFD, EU, GCF, and meteorological and governmental officials from Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, and Réunion. Our team engaged in productive discussions with technical partners, including the Intra-ACP CLIMSA Programmes and the World Meteorological Organization, to explore synergies and future developments. A key focus was the procurement of hydro-meteorological equipment and the advancement of a Regional Climate Centre (RCC) Network. The Steering Committee, chaired by the Indian Ocean Commission, concluded with a set of strategic recommendations to guide the next phases of implementation. Together, we continue to drive forward efforts in strengthening climate resilience and early warning systems in the Indian Ocean region. 🌍🌊💡
