A few days ago, I came across a post about the University of Antwerp’s Summer and Winter Schools new programs and I felt compelled to share my own incredible experience! In August 2024, I had the privilege of participating in the INSPIRE Summer School on Safety Pharmacology in Cardiology and Cardio-Oncology. “It’s not just what you sell, but what you tell.” That was just one of the brilliant insights our students shared during the final presentations of this year’s #FromMinetoFinger Antwerp Summer & Winter University. And just like that—12 days, 18 students, 15 speakers, and 5 immersive sessions later—we’ve wrapped up our seventh edition! When I kicked things off with a deep dive into the diamond industry, the students fell into three categories: 💎 Those overwhelmed by the flood of new information 💎 Those who took on the challenge headfirst 💎 Those who already knew most of it and (briefly) reconsidered their life choices We covered the classics—where diamonds come from, the pipeline, regulations, why Antwerp, lab-grown vs. natural diamonds, and so much more. But honestly, why did I go? Because if you give me a platform to talk about diamonds, I’ll take it. Not just about how pretty they are (though, let’s be real, they are). But about how Diamonds build schools, roads, careers, and futures. Personal highlights: ✨ That AHA moment when students learned how to hold a loupe and tweezer, learning the importance of Beneficiation, and grading polished diamonds and valuing rough diamonds in a tender simulation! (Yes, we accepted bids—no diamonds were taken home, but medals and candy were fair game!) Thank you Pluczenik South Africa! ✨ Sharing insights on Artisanal & Small-Scale Mining, highlighting the incredible work of OrigemA & GemFair . ✨ Talking about my first love—marketing. From Diamonds Are Forever to the Natural Diamond Council’s mission (Thank you Raluca Anghel), and even a hands-on assignment where students visited local jewelers to assess real-world sales pitches (which went so well, some of us bought 💎 jewelry!) Beyond the classroom, we explored Cullinan Mine, got a behind-the-scenes look at rough diamond sorting Petra Diamonds, and soaked in the entrepreneurial energy of Soweto. Our program featured industry experts like James AH Campbell, Edahn Golan, & Frank Auger. And, of course, no South African diamond experience would be complete without my fellow YOUNG DIAMANTAIRES— Nomalungelo Stofile, Molefi Letsiki & Kealeboga Pule—who fielded some truly brilliant (and slightly nerve-wracking) student questions. There’s so much more I could say, but LinkedIn thinks I’ve said enough (and we know the algorithm prefers short and snappy posts). So, a huge thank you to the University of Antwerp, GIBS Business School (Gordon Institute of Business Science), and everyone who made this happen. Evelien Peeten Koen Vandenbempt Ginny Robertson Ine Tassignon None of this would have been possible without the support of Arslanian Group Catoca Mining Company Dali Diamond Co. Diarough NV Primestar Rosy Blue Groupe Taché - THANK YOU!

Last week, I hosted the doctoral colloquium Researching Open Innovation here in Antwerp. It was the first time I organized a five-day doctoral colloquium entirely dedicated to open innovation management and research. We welcomed 25 students, and their feedback exceeded expectations—they were highly engaged and appreciative of the course. I had the pleasure of teaching alongside Agnieszka Radziwon, Bart Leten and Piet Verhoeve, which was a fantastic experience in its own right. Given the success of this edition, I am now exploring the possibility of organizing it again next year, either in Antwerp or elsewhere in Europe.

A huge thank you to the many guest speakers who generously shared their expertise, making this experience so valuable. Special appreciation to Prof. Koen Vandenbempt for the academic coordination of the programme, and to the GIBS Business School (Gordon Institute of Business Science) for co-creating the programme and making us feel so welcome in Johannesburg, South Africa. A heartfelt thank you as well to Ahalya Choksi and Ine Tassignon (Antwerp World Diamond Centre) for their dedication—working behind the scenes and on the ground to facilitate connections, organise workshops, deliver insightful lectures, and much more. I had the incredible opportunity of attending the Food Systems Law and Policy course at the Faculteit Rechten Universiteit Antwerpen and Antwerp Summer & Winter University as part of their summer-winter program. The course was not only enriching but also provided deep insights into the intersection of law, policy, and sustainable food systems. From the role of legislation in shaping food security to the evolving challenges in the global food landscape, each session for me was really thought-provoking. What truly made this experience stand out for me was the diverse group of facilitators; a blend of perspectives from academic scholars and industry experts. Their expertise and practical insights was both engaging and inspiring. I recall being speechless after the lecture from Leonard Mizzi - Head of Unit (DG INTPA) at the European Commission. It was indeed insightful. I would like to appreciate Tomaso Ferrando, Nora McKeon and Paola De Meo for their efforts in organizing such a rich and memorable course. A huge thank you to the University of Antwerp and all the brilliant facilitators for making this a memorable and impactful learning experience for me. I also thank my classmates too. You all brought your divers expertise and perspectives to the conversation thereby enriching the discuss and experience. I shall apply these insights to contribute to a more sustainable and equitable food systems not just in #Nigeria but in the world. #FoodSystems #LawAndPolicy #SustainableDevelopment #UniversityOfAntwerp #FoodSecurity #GlobalFoodSystems #LearningExperience #Sustainability
