🚦 𝗦𝗬𝗡𝗖𝗛𝗥𝗢𝗠𝗢𝗗𝗘 𝟰𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝗔 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗶𝗹𝗯𝗮𝗼 🇪🇸 💃 The SYNCHROMODE partners gathered for their 4th GA in Bilbao, from 20th to 22nd of November 2024 hosted by Universidad de Deusto.  This assembly was organised at the mid term of the project, giving the opportunity to take a step back on what was achieved and plan what still needs to be done to achieve complete success of the project. The technical partners are developing the SYNCHROMODE toolbox: this toolbox will include several modules to provide new predictive and network optimization capabilities to transport managers for balancing the transport supply and demand and react to different types of events. The three implementation sites, the #ProvinceofSouthHolland, #Thessaloniki and #Madrid gave updates about their experiments and shared their needs up to the end of the project. How can we shape traffic flows to benefit everyone? At the OptiRoutS closing event on Monday, November 18th, we tackled a growing challenge: how can navigation systems do more than just serve individual drivers and start contributing to societal goals like safety, livability, and sustainability? Key Event Takeaways: ➤ Balancing priorities: OptiRoutS tackles the tension between public road authorities aiming for societal traffic optimization and private routing services focusing on individual convenience, including addressing issues like cut-through traffic. ➤ Rerouting traffic smarter: Use cases demonstrated how smarter routing can enhance safety and livability by directing drivers away from sensitive areas like school zones and residential streets. However, the project also showed that traditional road categorization isn’t always the best solution. Smaller roads may sometimes offer better alternatives than congested main routes, reducing bottlenecks and improving overall traffic flow. ➤ Motivating behavioral change: While 20% of Flitsmeister drivers during the proof-of-concept phase were willing to choose a prosocial route, convincing the remaining 80% may require additional tools. Dynamic kilometer pricing, as discussed during the panel, could be a powerful incentive to align driver behavior with societal goals. This imec.icon project, co-financed by VLAIO, showcases what’s possible when public and private partners join forces. We worked with partners imec, movias, Transport & Mobility Leuven, Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer, IDLab (UGent - UAntwerpen - imec), imec-SMIT, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and CIB - KULeuven to redefine how navigation can guide drivers toward socially optimal routes while aligning with public policy goals. 🎥 Missed the event?
