Where science connects hearts and brains - Innovation in neuroscience, immunology and cardiometabolic disease
About us
BIOMED invests in high quality fundamental research and combines this with translational programs that aim to develop an application that is of benefit for the specific patient and the health sector. Our research focuses on the three main disease areas: immunology, neuroscience and cardiometabolic science. While the chosen disease areas each have their domain specific research questions, we strive to identify and invest in common research themes in line with the common working model. More in detail, we aim to: - Identify risk factors throughout life that predispose people to develop disease - Get better insights in disease mechanisms - Best monitor disease activity - Devise strategies to manage, treat or even prevent disease

The new doctoral projects with support from Research Foundation Flanders - FWO start off again in November. We would like to put these new FWO projects in the spotlight. 🔬 Excited to introduce FWO PhD student, Elke Smeets, who is conducting her research under the guidance of promoter Prof. Dr. Jerome Hendriks and co-promoter Dr. Sanne Verberk. Elke’s research is dedicated to exploring the role of fatty acid elongation in macrophages and microglia within the context of multiple sclerosis (MS). Her research could provide valuable insights into immune cell regulation and open up new possibilities for advancing MS treatments. 💭 “Witnessing the impact of MS on someone close to me has fueled my passion for advancing MS research. Since current treatments fall short in halting disease progression and inducing repair, my goal is to explore the therapeutic possibilities of targeting fatty acid elongation in MS. Through this PhD, I’m excited to contribute to creating a brighter future for those living with MS.” #FWOScholarship #ResearchExcellence #HendriksMINDLab #Neuroimmunology #MSResearch BIOMED-UHasselt

The new doctoral projects with support from Research Foundation Flanders - FWO start off again in November. We would like to put these new FWO projects in the spotlight. 🔬 Delighted to introduce Kirsten Poelmans, performing a FWO PhD project under guidance of promoter Prof. dr. Jeroen Bogie (UHasselt) and co-promoter Prof. dr. Ruth Stassart (Leipzig University). Kirsten's research focuses on the role of miRNA146a and 155 in foamy phagocyte biology within demyelinating disorders like multiple sclerosis (MS). She aims to understand how these miRNAs affect the metabolic and reparative characteristics of phagocytes, exploring their potential to promote remyelination and serve as therapeutic targets. 💭 “Multiple sclerosis often strikes people in the prime of their careers, yet there are currently no effective therapies that promote repair. With miRNAs serving as powerful genetic regulators, understanding their role could open new doors for innovative therapies that address this critical gap in MS care, providing hope for those affected by this debilitating condition.” #FWOScholarship #ResearchExcellence #MBIL #BogieLab #Immunology #MSResearch BIOMED-UHasselt

The new doctoral projects with support from Research Foundation Flanders - FWO start off again in November. We would like to put these new FWO projects in the spotlight. 🔬 Proud to present the PhD project of Zoë Donders under supervision of promoter Prof. Dr. Tim Vanmierlo and co-promoter Dr. Melissa Schepers. Inhibition of phosphodiesterase 4D (PDE4D) has been shown to enhance (oligodendrocyte precursor cell (OPC) differentiation and remyelination — two key processes disrupted in multiple sclerosis. Zoë’s research aims to unravel the downstream signaling pathways triggered by PDE4D inhibition and to design new compounds for isoform-selective PDE4D inhibition. By deepening the understanding of these mechanisms, she strives to identify novel therapeutic targets and inhibitors that can pave the way for regenerative treatments in MS patients. 💭 “My primary motivation for pursuing a PhD is to make a meaningful impact on human health through research. I am particularly driven to discover novel therapeutics and targets that promote remyelination in multiple sclerosis, as current treatments fail to stop disease progression or promote repair, leaving patients with limited options. This PhD offers the opportunity to delve into neuroscience and drug development, using innovative, animal-free models such as induced pluripotent stem cells and human brain slices, paving the way for breakthroughs in myelin regeneration.” #FWOScholarship #ResearchExcellence #Neuroscience #RICE #MSResearch BIOMED-UHasselt

The new doctoral projects with support from Research Foundation Flanders - FWO start off again in November. We would like to put these new FWO projects in the spotlight. 🔬 Excited to introduce the joint FWO PhD project of Marie Sels under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Markus Kleinewietfeld (UHasselt) and Prof. Dr. Ingrid Dijkgraaf (Maastricht University). Marie’s research focuses on Salp15, a protein found in tick saliva, which can modulate the immune system. Her goal is to explore its therapeutic potential in autoimmune diseases by studying the mode of action and effects of Salp15 on human CD4+ T cells, using an in vitro and in vivo approach. 💭 “The interaction between parasites and the immune system has always fascinated me. Understanding how parasites evade immune responses not only reveals the complexities of biological systems but also provides insights into potential treatments and vaccines. This field combines my passion for biology with a desire to contribute to global health, making it both challenging and rewarding.” #FWOScholarship #ResearchExcellence #Immunology #TranslationalImmunomodulation BIOMED-UHasselt

🗣️ Yesterday and today our 2nd master students Biomedical Sciences presented the end result of their business management course: their fictive business case. In 2 sessions of each 7 teams, the students had to convince their peers to invest in their product/company - the winning team of the session was the one that secured the highest amount. 🏆 As every year, the jury (Niels Hellings, Laura Hoekx, Leen W., Janne Kaes, An Voets) was impressed by the innovative products and business ideas that the students have come up with. 👏 🥳 Congrats to the winning teams: 💿 Nanoscale Vision (Sofie De Bondt, Kasper Dehaes, Nesrin Dinc, Vincent Driessen, Lucas Dumoulin, Lamyae Elangouri) presenting a fluorescent disc centrifuge for providing multiparameter information on nanoparticles 🏃 Pacebuds (Sterre Warson, Sofie Van Duffel, Svenja Van Driessche, Aline Torsin, Céline Pol, Natalia Skorupa, Pauline Van Dyck) beating walking/running-related fatigue with ear buds that arrange your motivational music based on your detected pace. We hope all of the students also enjoyed the experience and getting out of their scientific comfort zone and got inspired to grow their entrepreneurial mindset. #entrepreneurship #biomedicalsciences #lifesciences Faculteit Geneeskunde en Levenswetenschappen UHasselt, Faculteit Bedrijfseconomische Wetenschappen UHasselt

The new doctoral projects with support from Research Foundation Flanders - FWO start off again in November. We would like to put these new FWO projects in the spotlight. 🔬 Thrilled to present the joint FWO PhD project of Eva Punter under the wings of promoter Prof. dr. Jelle Hendrix (UHasselt) and co-promoter Prof. dr. Enrico Carlon (KULeuven). Biomolecular condensates are phase-separated compartments within the cell, crucial for cellular organization and linked to various neurodegenerative diseases and cancers. Eva’s project focuses on unraveling condensates formed by the protein Tau, associated with Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia. By integrating molecular dynamics modeling with fluorescence spectroscopy, she aims to develop a detailed computational model of Tau's condensation process, providing new insights into condensates and their associated disease progression. 💭 “My passion for combining physics with the biomedical world drives my research, along with a personal connection to the diseases I study. I aim to deepen our understanding of biomolecular condensates and their role in disease, hoping to contribute meaningful insights that bring us closer to answers for those affected.” #FWOScholarship #ResearchExcellence #DynamicBioimagingLab #AlzheimersDisease BIOMED-UHasselt
