Where science connects hearts and brains - Innovation in neuroscience, immunology and cardiometabolic disease
About us
BIOMED invests in high quality fundamental research and combines this with translational programs that aim to develop an application that is of benefit for the specific patient and the health sector. Our research focuses on the three main disease areas: immunology, neuroscience and cardiometabolic science. While the chosen disease areas each have their domain specific research questions, we strive to identify and invest in common research themes in line with the common working model. More in detail, we aim to: - Identify risk factors throughout life that predispose people to develop disease - Get better insights in disease mechanisms - Best monitor disease activity - Devise strategies to manage, treat or even prevent disease

𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗜 & 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 At BIOMED, the team of Esther Wolfs is pushing the boundaries of lung cancer research through the PIDGIN project. Using advanced cyclic staining protocols, they analyze non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) samples with unprecedented detail—staining multiple markers on a single tissue slide to preserve precious samples. These slides are then digitized and analyzed with AI to map tumor heterogeneity in both preclinical models and patient samples (in collaboration with Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg (ZOL) - Michiel Thomeer). Thanks to VSC | Vlaams Supercomputer Centrum's high-performance computing infrastructure, large-scale data processing and AI-powered image analysis are accelerating breakthroughs in cancer diagnostics. #digitalpathology #oncology #data #ai

𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐓 𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐬 (𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐬) hold great promise for treating autoimmune diseases, improving transplantation outcomes, and advancing immunotherapy. However, challenges like cell stability, high manufacturing costs, and slow clinical development continue to hinder progress. Markus Kleinewietfeld is exploring a groundbreaking approach: NCLX inhibition to enhance Treg viability and function. 📌 Why it matters for biopharma: ✅ Increased Treg stability ✅ Improved metabolic fitness ✅ More scalable, commercially viable therapies Curious about how this could shape the future of Treg-based treatments? Let’s connect and explore collaboration opportunities. #TregTherapies #Immunology #Biotech #Collaboration

The Euregion Life Science Alliance, in short #ELSA, or how a group of life sciences enthusiasts of the regions Belgian Limburg, Dutch Limburg, Liège and Aachen call themselves... what is important is their mission: connecting the different ecosystems to create a euregional life sciences #community. Why? - complementing each other with respect to expertise, value chains... - sharing best practices - increasing critical mass - stimulating cross-border awareness and collaboration - ... Last Tuesday the group was welcomed at the very nice location of La Grande Poste in Liège, was introduced to some gems in their ecosystem (CIRM ULiège) and discussed how #ELSA could contribute to the success of the #STIPP program.
