📣 Check out this latest addition to the Built by Nature Knowledge Hub: A new report from #SustainablePublicAffairs, co-funded by Built by Nature and #SustainableFoundations VZW, underscores the crucial role of natural, biobased building materials in achieving the EU’s climate goals while unlocking economic opportunities for bioeconomy and rural development. The report, "Understanding and Engaging with the EU Policy Landscape for Natural Building Materials", highlights key policy opportunities to accelerate the uptake of materials such as timber across Europe’s construction sector. The insights presented in the report were derived from an analysis of the EU policy landscape as of January 2025, augmented by a series of anonymised interviews conducted with researchers, experts from civil society organisations and think tanks, trade associations and EU institutions. Key recommendations from the report include: 👉 Fostering EU policies to enable responsibly sourced NBMs through sustainable land use and cultivation policies, and stronger localised supply chains. 👉 Creating EU policy incentives to boost demand for NBMs via investment in skills, demonstration projects, trust-building, and regulatory harmonisation. 👉Building a stronger NBM ecosystem by uniting stakeholders across the value chain to advocate for NBMs at the EU level. “Natural building materials must be part of the solution to decarbonise how we build, to achieve a built environment in harmony with nature,” according to Paul King, CEO of Built by Nature. “We work with networks of frontrunner organisations across Europe that use local resources responsibly. They are contributing to the transition of the construction sector and helping to create economic opportunities for rural areas. As concluded by this report, EU policy can work as an enabler to natural building materials, including timber, by creating incentives that foster sustainable supply and demand across the value chain.” “A fundamental shift in the way we build is needed for the EU to meet its climate targets,” said Henry Kaeding from #SustainablePublicAffairs. “This report shows that EU policy can unlock the potential of natural building materials, ensuring they are at the heart of the EU’s construction and bioeconomy policy." The report comes at a pivotal moment as the EU enters a new policy cycle (2024-2029) with a strong focus on boosting sustainable and affordable housing. Built by Nature urges policymakers to prioritise natural biobased materials as part of a holistic approach to decarbonising construction while revitalising rural economies. #decarbonisation #biobasedconstruction #EUpolicy #bioeconomy

In the late 1990's, in support of his PhD thesis, Built by Nature Netherlands Network Lead Peter Fraanje drafted an article outlining the concept of "cascading wood" -- being one of the first in his field to describe the sequential exploitation of the full potential of the resource during its usage. Today, the process of cascading is as relevant as ever, and Built by Nature is pleased to announce grant funding to systems change think tank Metabolic Institute to lead a research project to optimise Europe’s timber supply chain and maximise carbon storage. The initiative will involve consultation with non-profit foundation Stichting Probos, Probos Foundation and CEI Bois (European Confederation of Woodworking Industries), analysing existing timber flows across Europe and developing cascading strategies to expand carbon storage pools. Peter Fraanje sees the principles as being completely applicable today: “Built by Nature is excited by the possibilities of this project...Cascading can enable us to promote the concept of optimal timber use, create a shift in industry mindset and offer relevant guidance to policymakers and industry leaders to drive sustainable timber practices across Europe.” Full details of the project are covered in the announcement: https://lnkd.in/gqMKaNuU and you can even find Peter's pioneering article on cascading here: https://lnkd.in/gUr9dkAa #carbonstorage #cascadingwood #sustainabletimber #timbersupplychain

Built by Nature European Networks Lead Joe Giddings has taken the initiative to highlight his TOP FIVE EU policy and partnership developments which can drive the accelerated adoption of biobased construction materials -- carefully curated, nicely summarised and worth following in 2025! #EuropeanLegislation #EmbodiedCarbon #CarbonStorage #TimberConstruction
These EU policies might be about to turbocharge the use of biobased construction materials across the continent. 💚 2024 saw the EU policy agenda on biobased materials leap ahead. With the policy landscape continuously evolving, here are 5 of the most exciting developments to keep an eye on in 2025 and beyond: 🥇 Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). This directive calls on EU member states to introduce mandatory reporting of whole life carbon for new buildings by 2028, and requires member states to publish a roadmap for introducing carbon limits by 2027. Some (incl. France, Finland, Denmark) are years ahead but we should expect a wave of new national regulations to come in the next few years, finally placing much greater emphasis on embodied carbon emissions. 🥈 Carbon Removals Certification Framework (CRCF). The EU has recognised that bio-based construction products like timber, straw and hemp offer significant potential for long lasting storage of CO2. Whilst the EPBD allows building owners to declare a building's carbon storage capacity on their Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), this new CRCF methodology (under development) will allow building owners to provide reliable and transparent evidence on carbon stored through construction. Monetisation, or other forms of value, may follow, thereby levelling the playing field in terms of cost. 🥉 EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). There has been much backlash to this regulation which was due to come into force in 2024, now postponed until December 2025. The EUDR introduces extensive due diligence requirements for all businesses seeking to import, export or trade wood products. I believe this is a GOOD thing for timber - strengthening the case for building with timber by increasing confidence that the supply chain is free from deforestation. 4️⃣ Sustainable Financial Disclosure Regulation (SFDR). How do we redirect capital towards sustainable products or sectors? Introduced 4 years ago, the SFDR was, in part, an attempt to answer this question by requiring investors and fund managers to classify the sustainability of funds. A leaked EU Commission agenda for 2025 has indicated that there will be review of the SFDR in Q3. Could this provide an opportunity for the biobased sector to stake a claim as a particularly sustainable investment? 5️⃣ Forest & Climate Leaders Partnership (FCLP). OK, ok, this one's not exactly an EU policy, but a global partnership of Governments including the EU, the UK and the US. In November all eyes will turn to COP30, which will take place in the city of Belem, Brazil. Given that Belem is the capital of an Amazonian state, the role of forests and forest economies will be front and centre stage. We can expect the FCLP to meet again, where this partnership of Governments may build upon their previous commitment to greening construction with sustainable wood.
