How can cities utilize their waste centers as collection hubs to promote circularity? ⏳By 2050, global waste generation is projected to reach 3.4 billion tonnes annually. This translates to a 70% increase from 2016. Cities hold an important role in addressing this challenge. A promising solution lies in the creative reuse of construction materials from demolition and renovation, turning waste into new opportunities. We partnered with the Provincie Utrecht to turn municipal waste into valuable resources and advance the circular economy. We believe municipal waste centers (‘milieustraten’) are essential in this effort as they serve as central collection points for various types of household waste and offer the potential to become central hubs in circular material chains. 🔄 How did we do that? ➜ Conducted a comprehensive material flow analysis to map waste streams and their environmental impacts. ➜ Identified high-potential materials with opportunities for high-value reuse. ➜ Developed an actionable roadmap to guide stakeholders in scaling circular solutions. This approach revealed key opportunities to adapt municipal waste centers and underscored the importance of stakeholder collaboration. 🤝 Discover how cities can embrace circularity to reduce their environmental footprint: https://bit.ly/3YYLHz9 Jorrit Vervoordeldonk Gerard Roemers Jan van 't Hek Fenne Reinders Folmer Liesbeth Sträter #CircularEconomy #WasteManagement #Utrecht

How can municipalities reduce material use and emissions without compromising housing targets? The Netherlands faces the dual challenge of building 100,000 homes annually while meeting ambitious carbon reduction goals. With construction responsible for 50% of raw material use and 11% of CO₂ emissions, adopting innovative pathways is essential to align with the Paris Agreement. It starts with developing local carbon budgets and evaluating the environmental footprint of planned housing and infrastructure projects. At Metabolic, we help municipalities with quantifying and prioritizing five key circular strategies to reduce material use and emissions while meeting housing targets. These include: 1️⃣ High-quality reuse of secondary building materials. 2️⃣ Biobased materials to lower environmental impact. 3️⃣ Vertical extensions to optimize the use of the existing building stock.. 4️⃣ Smaller (or different) housing typologies to improve efficiency. 5️⃣ Industry decarbonization to adopt greener production methods, and optimize supply chains. Our approach delivers measurable results. For one municipality we quantified the following pathway to a more sustainable built environment: ✅ 32% reduction in CO₂ emissions. ✅ 39% decrease in primary material consumption. ✅ 31% overall environmental performance improvement. We believe in a systems approach—combining circular design, spatial planning, and data-driven decision-making to achieve sustainable growth. Together, these circular strategies enable municipalities to build future-proof housing, utility buildings and infrastructure within planetary boundaries. 🌞 Can we power up the EU’s green energy goals while protecting biodiversity? As the EU accelerates its solar capacity, balancing renewable energy with biodiversity protection is crucial. Nature-inclusive solar parks, which integrate conservation with energy production, offer a promising path. But making these parks a reality requires clear definitions and supportive policies. In collaboration with The Nature Conservancy in Europe and SolarPower Europe, we’ve developed recommendations to help the EU reshape its policy landscape. By defining nature-inclusive solar standards and supporting developers with guidance on siting and management, we can create solar solutions that work for both nature and people. 🔗 Read our policy paper to explore how nature-inclusive solar parks can help tackle climate change and biodiversity loss in tandem: https://bit.ly/3YPqw2p Alexandra Fox Anne de Valença #RenewableEnergy #Biodiversity #Sustainability #SolarPower #GreenEnergy

#COP29 & The Climate Finance Gap: Where are the Missing Trillions? As COP29 continues in Baku—a city built on oil—the setting highlights a big issue: while fossil fuels continue to power economies, there is still not enough funding being directed toward sustainable energy and climate solutions. 💰 Fiona Harvey, Environment Editor at The Guardian notes, "the incumbency of fossil fuels is so strong that massive investment will be needed to shift the world onto that lower-carbon, lower-waste, more productive and healthier path." At Metabolic, we see a gap between what’s easy to fund and what truly drives change. To limit global warming to 1.5°C, the world needs $4.5 trillion each year, something traditional finance alone can’t cover. New funding pathways are essential, especially for projects that don’t fit typical models but could make a real impact. Climate finance must go beyond solar farms and EVs. We need investments that challenge the status quo, support developing regions, and fund the overlooked solutions that matter. COP29, despite its location, reminds us that to close the climate finance gap, we need fresh approaches for a sustainable future. Are you following COP29? What are your thoughts on climate finance and how it needs to change? Check out the Guardian article: https://lnkd.in/gtpZmbta #COP29Azerbaijan #ClimateAction #Baku #ClimateFinance #SystemicChange

📢 Looking back on #COP16 As #COP29 begins today in Baku, we’re taking a look back on COP16 which ended in Cali, Colombia earlier this month. After an intensive and insightful week, our team returned with fresh perspectives and renewed commitment. The message was loud and clear: we must urgently address extraction, overexploitation, and pollution if we are to achieve the goal of improving global biodiversity by 30% by 2030. Here are our main takeaways from COP16: 🟢 Scaling nature-positive solutions: Accelerating bioregional and regenerative approaches is essential, and new MRV (Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification) tools are helping bridge data gaps, signaling that the time for action is now. 🟢 Nature-positive bioeconomy: The bioeconomy has the potential to drive sustainable land use or perpetuate exploitation. A nature-positive approach that centers on Indigenous and local communities is vital for resilient ecosystems and thriving communities. 🟢 Land and water as one: COP16 highlighted that addressing seascapes and landscapes separately weakens ecosystem resilience. A unified approach to land and water is essential for effective biodiversity protection. 🟢 Rethinking urban spaces: Cities are unique hubs for sustainable change. Redesigning urban systems with nature in mind is crucial for resilience and biodiversity. 🟢 The power of collective action: Real progress relies on cross-sector partnerships that share responsibility and unite around measurable goals. Only together can we turn ambition into lasting impact. As we keep a close eye on COP29, we’re looking to advocate for nature-positive approaches in the agreements ahead. The path ahead may be challenging, but the urgency for action has never been greater. Keen to discuss how we can collectively drive biodiversity forward?
