𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗹’𝘀 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯: 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 As a member of 𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗹’𝘀 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯, I recently participated in a thought-provoking discussion on the role of venture studios in driving corporate innovation. Guided by Ryan Larcom, Managing Director at High Alpha Innovation, and joined by global corporate innovation executives, the session provided a platform to share insights on evaluating opportunities, securing first corporate customers, and balancing corporate objectives with startup autonomy. We explored the challenges corporate organizations face when innovating outside their core business and identified three key factors: 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 – Business unit leaders and stakeholders often resist initiatives that risk cannibalizing existing products. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 – Corporate “consensus-based thinking” can slow down decision-making. 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀 – P&L-driven funding models push for premature business cases for uncertain ventures. We also asked: “𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀?” Three solutions emerged: 1. 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 – Structuring investments in stages based on evidence and validation. 2. 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 – Engaging strategic partners or venture investors to co-invest in early-stage external ventures. 3. 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘀 – Leveraging corporate advantages like channel partnerships and customer relationships. The 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼 𝘃𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 included: • 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 – Allowing teams to pursue disruptive ideas without conflicting with business unit compensation models. • 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 – Moving away from consensus-based “vetocracy” to enable faster decisions and pivots. • 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 – Using balance sheet capital and milestone-based learning rather than traditional P&L-driven funding.
