🌐 BIR is attending and actively contributing to the 5th session of negotiations to develop a Global Plastics Treaty (INC-5) in Busan, Republic of Korea. The first two days saw intense discussions as delegates worked to shape a global treaty on plastic pollution.♻️ 💡Key issues included ✅ Plastic products and chemicals (design, production, chemicals of concern, and emissions), ✅ Waste management ("legacy" vs. "existing" pollution, and global vs. national measures), and ✅ Objectives and scope (clarifying treaty goals and incorporating life cycle considerations). While progress was made, Alev Somer and Dasa Paulikova report on the challenges that remain with expanding text and procedural debates. Delegates are striving to balance ambition with practicality as they are trying to move closer to consensus.🤝🌏 BIR has submitted its comments, highlighting key messages for INC delegates and emphasizing a lifecycle approach to #plastics. Key points include promoting #designforrecycling, setting #recycledcontenttargets, investing in #recyclinginfrastructure and adopting a cautious approach to chemical recycling. It also urges #fairtrade to support recycling, particularly in developing regions with limited recycling capacities. 🔄 #PlasticsTreaty #INC5 #Sustainability #Recycling #GlobalAction #CircularEconomy
About us
Founded in 1948, BIR was the first federation to support the interests of the recycling industry on an international scale. Today, BIR represents more than 30,000 companies around the globe, with a direct membership of over 950 companies and 38 national associations from 70 countries. Together, these members form the largest international recycling federation. The federation provides a dynamic forum for its members to share their knowledge and experience and serves as a platform to establish successful business relations among other industrial sectors and policy makers. BIR’s twice-yearly conventions are the highlight of the global recycling events calendar. The conventions are designed to give companies and individuals in the recycling industry the opportunity to make new contacts in a truly international environment, follow industry trends, keep up-to-date on international legislation affecting trade, stay abreast of technology developments through international exhibitions of key recycling machinery/equipment and services, and participate in lively debates during keynote sessions with high-profile guest presentations. 🔄At the ongoing Bureau of Middle East Recycling (BMR) Conference in Dubai, BMR President Mir Mujtaba Hussain chaired a very constructive meeting bringing together several #recycling associations from across the globe and BMR board members. 🌟 This collaborative forum was an opportunity to discuss the future of recycling on a international scale. BIR, the global federation of recycling industries, was represented by President Susie Burrage OBE, Director General Arnaud Brunet and Communications Committee Chair Ibrahim Aboura. 🌏🤝 Together, they participated in fruitful discussions on how BIR can further strengthen its role as the unified global voice of the #recyclingsector. The collective message was clear: the industry needs a united vision to address global challenges, advocate for open markets, and advance #sustainablepractices worldwide.♻️ Recycled Materials Association (ReMA) EuRIC - The European Recycling Industries Colin Kelly Robin Wiener Julia Ettinger (Blees) Material Recycling Association of India #EricTan #MalaysiaNonFerrousMetalsAssociation

🌏 BIR Trade & Environment Director Alev Somer and Trade & Environment Policy Officer Dasa Paulikova are representing BIR in #Busan, Korea 🇰🇷, at the 5th Session of the #UN Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5), working towards the adoption of a legally binding instrument on #plastic pollution. 📅 Today marks 1,000 days since the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) adopted its resolution to end plastic pollution. However, negotiations on the draft treaty text are still ongoing, with hopes of finalising it for adoption by the end of this week. 🔄 Stay tuned as discussions progress, with BIR advocating for the #recyclingindustry’s interests to ensure the full life cycle of #plastics is addressed in the treaty. ♻️ #INC5 #Sustainability #RecyclingMatters #GlobalAction #CircularEconomy #PlasticTreaty #EnvironmentalPolicy #EndPlasticPollution

🔋🔄BIR Trade & Environment Policy Officer Federico Zanotti is actively contributing to the second meeting of the United Nations Basel Convention Small Intersessional Working Group (SIWG) on waste #batteries technical guidelines (TGs). The group is advancing its work on updating the TGs for the Environmentally Sound Management (ESM) of Waste Lead-Acid Batteries (WLAB) and developing new TGs for the ESM of Other Waste Batteries (OWB). 💡Key Discussions: ✅WLAB: The group addressed specific challenges concerning the ESM of these end-of-life batteries, including labeling and traceability, the role of the informal sector in the collection and recycling of plastics from battery treatment. ✅OWB: Discussions focused on identifying the different types of end-of-life batteries, categorised by their chemistry, to be included under the scope of the TG and therefore the Basel Convention. For each battery type, the TGs aim to provide guidance, among other things, on existing methodologies for each of their respective recycling steps, like discharging, disassembling, shredding, and black mass processing. 📄The outcome documents from the meeting will be reviewed at the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention, scheduled for 28 April to 9 May 2025 in Geneva. ♻️ 🌏 #Sustainability #Recycling ♻️ #CircularEconomy #BatteryRecycling #LeadAcidBatteries 🪫#EnvironmentalManagement #BaselConvention #TechnicalGuidelines 📘#ESM #PolicyDevelopment

📍 https://lnkd.in/eASqintw BIR publishes new #PositionPaper on #FreeTrade of #RecycledMaterials: Government interventions putting businesses, jobs and #recyclingrates at risk #Regulations and policy interventions that stifle the #freetrade of recycled materials are hampering achievement of #sustainabilitygoals and undermining the transition to a #circulareconomy, the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) insists in its latest position paper approved during the meeting of the organisation’s World Council of Recycling Associations on 30 October in Singapore. Entitled “Free Trade of Recycled Materials”, the position paper stresses that, to prevent such unwanted outcomes, the #recyclingindustry must be properly represented wherever policy decisions that affect #trade in #recycledmaterials are being made. #Recycledmaterials have long played a critical role in global manufacturing #supplychains and will remain key to addressing climate challenges as sustainable alternatives to extracted natural resources. But to be competitive, the global #recyclingindustry depends on stable market access. Therefore, the position paper maintains, policies should ensure the free and fair flow of these materials. Although this trade enables the efficient distribution of #recycledmaterials to regions where they are most needed, governments worldwide have intensified policy interventions that hinder flows across borders, according to BIR (...)
