🎙️ Earlier this month, the EU Commissioners-designate appeared before the European Parliament to prove their suitability for their assigned portfolios and reply to MEPs’ questions. 🚦 Here’s our assessment of the Commissioners’ expressed plans from a carbon removal perspective, as the approval vote is about to take place this week. 🟢 In green are encouraging ambitions that would incentivise CDR development; 🟡 In yellow, good intentions but leaving room for improvement; 🔴 Finally, we marked in red a lack of ambition or clarity. Do you agree with our assessment? You’ve heard of companies making 'net zero' claims based on carbon credits. But how can we ensure these claims are reliable, and carbon removals are used properly? Our recent paper digs deeper on all uses of carbon removals to deliver climate benefits. And just in case you don’t feel like reading a 27-page policy brief, author and Policy Analyst Thibault Aubert gives you a rundown of the topic. 👇 For the full video, head over to our YouTube channel! 👉 https://lnkd.in/eu6C3Cgp Here is the policy brief. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eAx4aSJT #CDR #CDRexplained #CarbonCredits

There are still a lot of questions to solve before carbon removal can reach scale. To help decision-makers know what those are and what to prioritise, we've drawn up a list. It's fairly extensive... Find the full database here: https://lnkd.in/eqdPi5yA #carbonremoval #database #funding

The EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) is the current compliance framework for reducing emissions in the EU. Integrating carbon removal into the framework is increasingly discussed. But is this the best approach? If the EU were to allow carbon removal in the ETS, the EU should ensure climate impact, create transparent demand, foster sustainability, and manage mitigation deterrence. We propose a few ways it can do so ⤵️ Should carbon removal be integrated into the ETS or should an alternative system be considered? Let us know in the comments 👇 #carbonremoval #ETS #carboncredits

We’ve got a new super model 👯♀️ ... for scaling CDR. The challenge of scaling carbon removal globally will require a new model – coordinated autonomy - combining local action with global coordination in key areas. In the words of Noah Deich, “we need to figure out how to not recreate the wheel and get to a place where we have some standards that everybody can point to” both on the local and global levels. Our EU-US webinar brought together Noah Deich (DOE), Jane Flegal (Frontier), Jack Andreasen (Breakthrough Energy), and Fabien Ramos (European Commission) to discuss this new model and what it would mean in practice for some of the largest players in developing carbon removal markets locally and globally. Some other highlights include: 🎯 The scale of the challenge from $2B → $500B by 2050 requires unprecedented collaboration 📋 Standards alignment are a must and EU's Carbon Removal Certification Framework is aiming at providing blueprint for market trust 🔄 The need for a multi-channel approach: ✓ Government procurement ✓ Private sector commitments ✓ Compliance markets ✓ Voluntary purchases 🤝 Successful scaling centres on community-centered deployment providing local benefits and jobs ⏱🚫 No time to watch the full webinar? Excess emissions are all those that exceed the carbon budget. Large historic emitters have already surpassed their carbon budget. We therefore need to use carbon removal to account for all those extra emissions. We explain why in our paper written by Robert Höglund and Eli Mitchell-Larson. Very proud of this new tool, tons of work went into it! The database offers a comprehensive and detailed view of the open research questions remaining in the portfolio of CDR methods. With a new MFF and Framework Programme for R&I ahead, it's imperative that funding support can address these open questions and advance carbon removal methods. Let us know what you think!
🗺️ Have you taken a trip down our brand-new carbon removal (CDR) research gap database yet? We've centralised and complimented existing resources from RMI, the Commission and Frontier (see resources in the comments) and compiled over 350 research gaps to offer an overview of existent carbon dioxide removal (CDR) research gaps and support you in making informed decisions regarding CDR funding. We have identified CDR areas that lack sufficient research or are underexplored to help target funding where it is most needed to accelerate CDR research, development and innovation (RD&I). Are you a policymaker? A researchers or a funders? We need your expert feedback to build upon this first iteration, don't hesitate to tell us what you think! 👉 https://lnkd.in/eqdPi5yA #CDR #CDRfunding #Database

🚨 More COP29 news | The European Parliament in Plenary just adopted a resolution, stating out its demand for COP29. The Parliament urges all parties to follow through with Paris Agreement commitments, notably adopting “concrete targets and policies” to achieve these goals. Crucially, the MEPs: 🔸 Call on the European Commission to propose separate sub targets for gross emissions reductions, land-based removals, and technological removals as part of the EU 2040 climate target. 🔸 Urge for the inclusion of these targets in the parties’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). 🔸 Insist on strict separation of permanent and temporary removals under Article 6 rules. Here is the Resolution. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eZwQpt8J We strongly support the Parliament’s Resolution. Separate targets would not only ensure carbon removal development does not hamper emissions reduction efforts, but also improve clarity and transparency of progress monitoring mechanisms. ❗ As a reminder, Parties to the Paris Agreement must submit their NDCs for 2035 by February 2025. The EU will file a joint target on behalf of its 27 member states, which is likely to be derived as a middle point between its 2030 ambition and the upcoming decision on the 2040 climate target. Our recent open letter asking for stronger CDR policies. 👉 https://lnkd.in/ej-W8D74 #COP29 #CDR #2040target

🎉 Breaking news from COP29: The conference of the parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA) has officially approved the new standards on methodologies and removals for the Article 6.4 Mechanism, setting the stage for a global carbon market. After years of standstill, this means that we now can work towards an official international stage for countries and companies to trade carbon credits. 👏 This development is encouraging for carbon dioxide removal (CDR), giving the world one more tool to meet global climate targets. More on Article 6.4 in our up-to-date Policy Tracker entry. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eUA6g9FN #Article6 #ParisAgreement #COP29
