We fund research & innovation projects advancing circular bio-based industries in Europe under EU’s Horizon Europe
About us
The Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) is a €2 billion partnership between the European Union and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) that funds projects advancing competitive circular bio-based industries in Europe. CBE JU is operating under the rules of Horizon Europe, the EU’s research and innovation programme, for the 2021-2031 period. The partnership is building on the success of its predecessor, the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU), while addressing the current challenges facing the industry. The CBE JU is the legal and universal successor of BBI JU in respect of all contracts, grant agreements and liabilities. The CBE JU’s objectives are ensuring a high level of bio-based industrial systems’ environmental performance, accelerating the development and market deployment of bio-based innovative solutions. CBE JU organises yearly calls for proposals supporting research and innovation, de-risking investments, addressing market challenges, placing sustainability at the heart of the projects, strengthening the collaboration of all bioeconomy actors and engaging with stakeholders along bio-based value chains.

🎂 This week, CBE JU marks its third anniversary! Since its launch in 2021, CBE JU has been at the forefront of a competitive, circular, and collaborative #bioeconomy in Europe, contributing to making it. Together with the European Commission and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC), the public-private partnership has powered #sustainable innovation, modernised industries, and positioned Europe as a global leader in #green technologies. 🔵 Rob Beekers, 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗕𝗘 𝗝𝗨 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱: '#Circularity will be the cornerstone for any industry moving forward. Europe’s competitiveness and strategic autonomy will depend on its ability to lead in green technologies. CBE JU, as a public-private partnership, unites public funding with private innovation to accelerate the development and scaling-up of #circular #biobased products in Europe. By doing so, we reduce our dependency from abroad and empower our industries to compete globally while delivering societal and environmental benefits.' 🟢 Helena Vieira, 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗕𝗘 𝗝𝗨 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗲: 'CBE JU-funded projects exemplify how scientific innovation can drive real-world solutions to mitigate environmental challenges. By advancing circular processes and products, such as the development of biodegradable, compostable, recyclable, and reusable materials, these projects are reshaping industries and fostering a future where #sustainability is embedded in every stage of production and consumption. The success of CBE JU-funded projects demonstrates the power of collaboration between industry, academia, and the public sector.' 🟡 Sari Tasa, 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗕𝗘 𝗝𝗨 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀' 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽: 'CBE JU’s commitment to inclusivity ensures that the transition to a circular bioeconomy leaves no region behind and challenges frontrunners. The public-private partnership has enabled more regions and countries across Europe to actively contribute to and benefit from the circular bioeconomy. This inclusivity strengthens our collective impact and drives innovation from every corner of Europe. These practical collaboration and knowledge-sharing platforms ensure that the benefits of the bio-based economy are shared widely, creating jobs and boosting local economies.' Link in the comments 👇
