Why do we call those pension plans "group-insurance"? The term might sound outdated today, but it has an interesting history. Back in the 1950s, pension plans emerged for workers organized in small groups within a given company or sector. In Belgium, this was especially common among industries like steel and coal mining. These were tough and dangerous jobs. Many workers didn’t survive to retirement at 60 due to the very harsh working conditions, but those who did faced an uncertain financial future. Their body couldn’t just work anymore, still they needed a revenue to sustain they live in the absence of revenue from work. Groups of workers decided to take action. They pooled part of their salaries into a collective savings pot. Those reaching 60 could pull from this fund, ensuring they could live out their remaining years with financial dignity. Back then, if you retired, you might only expect to live another five years. Fast forward to today, and retirees often need their savings to last two or three decades. The original idea of group pension preparation was transformed by insurance companies, which stepped in to manage these funds on behalf of those groups of workers and organized the pension planning industry. The term "group-insurance" stuck. Today, work life is different. We no longer start and finish careers in the same place or with the same people. Yet, the old term persists, even if it doesn't quite fit our modern realities. Understanding this evolution reminds us how much work life has changed and underscores the need to see our Belgian pension system reformed through a new, more modern, lens.

Do you really understand your group-insurance statement? Most don't. Truth be told, even I am struggling sometimes. And that's a serious issue. Everyone retires eventually, which means clarity in understanding retirement benefits is crucial if you want to create trust in the system. But there's more to the problem than just unclear paperwork. In my opinion, the current pension system is failing employees in another way too: financial performance. Many employees pension plans are tied to "Class 21" products. What's the catch? - Capital is guaranteed, which sounds great. - But low risk = low returns. Fine for those nearing retirement. But for a 25-year-old with 40 years of investment horizon in front of her? It's a missed opportunity. At Easyvest, we've taken a different route. We offer pension plans using straightforward language and investment in index funds, such as ETFs. This means a diversified basket of stocks and bonds with potentially higher returns over time instead of the stagnant, low-return products many rely on today.

“Can we move our exiting group-insurance to Easyvest?” The short answer is: “Yes, you can.” Legacy group-insurances are notoriously hard to move. And portability is not their primary feature. But here is one way to transfer your existing pension plans to Easyvest: 1. Get individual buy-in from all your employees You first need all your employees to explicitly agree to the change. The easiest is that we help you send a document for e-signature to all your current and past employees via email. 2. Open your new Easyvest pension plan We transform your existing plan into an Easyvest one. It means that we don’t take previous commitment or guarantees that might have been taken. We start back from a fresh new plan. 3. Stop payment in the old plan You can stop making contributions for your employees into the old plan. And instead, make those money add-ons to your freshly opened Easyvest plan. 4. Notify old plan trustee of cancellation You need to inform the old insurer that you will not make contributions into the old plan anymore. We can help with the paperwork. 5. Ask for old reserves transfer for old trustee to Easyvest You can choose to transfer your old existing reserves and pension money into your new Easyvest plan. We can help with the paper work and process to ask your former insurer. P.S. let me know if you want further details

3 reasons why it’s hard to plan for pension in Belgium. 1/ Psychological Hurdles: - Youthful indifference to aging. - Our brains prioritize immediate concerns. 2/ Technical Complexity: - A maze of rules and regulations, specific to each worker type: civil servants, employees, freelancers. - Historical layers of social and fiscal intricacies that stack up since Belgium's creation in 1830. 3/ Practical Barriers: - Knowing where to start is daunting. - The digital age offers solutions, yet the path is unclear. Understanding these barriers highlights the necessity for accessible solutions, breaking down these walls to secure Belgians pensions. We're working on it 💪🏻

Many Belgian employers are missing out on a strong pension planning strategy. Here's how it typically goes: Most choose group-insurance. Employers pay in, insurers invest the money, and upon retirement, employees get back their capital plus relatively modest returns. The catch? Investments are often placed in "Class 21," which guarantees capital but typically results in a low return (around 2-3%). Barely beating inflation... Consider this alternative: pension funds. While they don't guarantee capital, they opt for diversified investments in stocks and bonds, aiming for growth rates between 5-7%. This approach may seem riskier, but over 40 years, these returns can significantly compound, potentially offering much better outcomes. For employers weighing their options, diving into what pension funds offer could be worth exploring for your employees' future wealth and financial security. — Corentin Scavee, Antoine Bouvy, Géraud Missonnier, Andrés Jorge Buysse, Charles de Brabandere, Jim Stockman, Pierre Vanobbergen, Camille van Vyve, Brieuc de Goussencourt, Michel Ulaj

Is the concept of group-insurance losing its relevance? In today's dynamic career landscape, staying with one employer until retirement is rare. Today, professionals are moving from one opportunity to another. This shift demands a fresh perspective on retirement plans for employees. To me, the traditional concept of the “group-insurance” in Belgium feels outdated because you don’t work all your professional life with and in the same “group” of people anymore. The alternative, aka pension funds, bears the promise of more flexibility, lower costs and, ultimately, greater financial benefits for employees. For CEOs seeking efficient and straightforward pension solutions for their employees, it's worthwhile to explore beyond the traditional group-insurance, and to consider a pension fund. — Corentin Scavee, Antoine Bouvy, Géraud Missonnier, Andrés Jorge Buysse, Charles de Brabandere, Jim Stockman, Pierre Vanobbergen, Camille van Vyve, Brieuc de Goussencourt, Michel Ulaj

I’m grateful to announce Easyvest's latest funding round of €13M, led by Belfius and SFPIM, to better the traditional group-insurance for employees. Progressively saving money for retirement during one’s career is important to maintain a standard of living. Since our humble beginnings, Easyvest’s mission has been to help Belgians to build that savings pot in a simple and effective way via the use of ETF index funds and a delightfully human customer service. Today, we are officially launching a pension plan solution for employees. It is everything you come to expect from a traditional group-insurance…but in better. For employers, we simplify drastically the admin process. For employee, we allow them to invest their pension savings in ETF. The element of trust is essential for financial institutions like Easyvest. Particularly in pension: how to ensure that your savings and money will still be there in 30 years when you will retire? To answer to that legitimate concern, we are delighted to welcome Belfius, Belgium’s second largest bank-insurer, and SFPIM, Belgium’s Sovereign Fund, as investors. We are honored by their token of trust, and we are looking forward to improving for the better the way Belgian’s plan for their pension. I’d like to thank all the people who made this deal possible at Belfius including: Laurent Goudemant, Antoine Dandois, Frédéric Van der Schueren, Matthias Baillieul, Jürgen De Moor, Christophe Demain, Cecile Scalais, Jérémie Buvens, and at SFPIM: Marc Ceurremans, Adrien Gassée, Alexandra Vanhoudenoven, Koen Van Loo, Tom Feys, Celine Vaessen.
