👏 The "Heat Pumps Flexibility: Decarbonisation Holy Grail" panel just wrapped up on Day 2 of the IHP Prague Conference 2024! Moderated by EHPA’s Digital Policy Officer, Adeline H., this session explored how heat pump flexibility is key to achieving net-zero goals. Heat pumps flexibility is an underexploited opportunity, which makes business cases competitive. Key highlights: 🔑 Ivan Rangelov (Danfoss Climate Solutions) underlined the need to inform industries about the capacities of heat pumps to generate high temperatures of 100 °C and 200 °C. He stressed that better knowledge-sharing about successful business cases is crucial for broader adoption. 🔑 Stephan Höflmaier (Bilfinger Industrial Solutions) stressed there are more opportunities than challenges for heat pumps, particularly in industrial applications. He emphasised the need for investment in thermal storage as a future-proof solution for high-temperature applications, and long-term political support for heat pumps for industries. 🔑 Dr. Joachim Dias (ERM) highlighted that heat pumps are pivotal to decarbonising the economy. Achieving this requires solid funding options and regulatory adjustments. He called for improved grid capacity, balanced tariffs, taking advantage of close-to-zero prices, and widespread installer training to unlock heat pumps’ full potential. 🔑 Jan Hicl (Delta Green) identified technical barriers such as fragmented interfaces and inadequate smart metering systems as major challenges to leveraging heat pump flexibility. He called for harmonisation of standards to optimise integration and efficiency across regions. Wrapping up, Adeline noted that while the technology and opportunities are ready, a lack of awareness of global business cases hinders industrial heat pump adoption. She called for better communication, accessible data, political clarity, and stronger industry-policy collaboration to unlock their full potential. 💫 Good examples inspire: Explore real-world heat pump case studies that demonstrate the potential discussed in today's panel: https://lnkd.in/dpm927SG. 🚀 The IHP Prague Conference 2024 is officially underway! 🚀 The first panel, "Strategy Outlook for Large Heat Pumps," has set a high standard for insight and innovation: 🌟 Opening the event, Petr Hladík, Minister of Environment of Czech Republic, emphasized the role of industrial heat pumps in reducing emissions and advancing the nation’s climate ambitions through clean technologies. 💡 Paul Kenny, Director General of the European Heat Pump Association, highlighted the transformative potential of heat pumps in revolutionising the EU energy system. He urged policymakers to prioritise industrial heat pumps in the upcoming EU plans, noting that while Europe may have lagged behind in PV and batteries, heat pumps represent a key opportunity to lead in decarbonisation. “It’s important for industrial heat pumps to be in the centre of it”, he outlined. 💡 Michael Liebreich, Founder of BNEF and Liebreich Associates, spoke about the global acceleration of clean energy, identifying heat pumps as a critical technology for industrial electrification, also at high temperatures up to 500 degrees. He underscored the importance of grid investment and warned against over-reliance on expensive alternatives like hydrogen. 💡 Jonathan Volt, Project Officer at the European Commission Joint Research Center, shared insights on Europe’s progress toward its 2030 targets, highlighting the role of industrial heat pumps as a ready solution for decarbonisation. He pointed to EU frameworks, such as the Electrification Action Plan covering the Heat Pump Action Plan and the expanded ETS to individual boilers and transport, as pivotal in driving adoption. 💡 David JP Phillips, acclaimed speaker and author, demonstrated the power of storytelling in driving change. “The most important story is the one you tell yourself”, he said, showing how emotions like trust and empathy, combined with compelling storytelling, can inspire customers and policymakers to act on heat pumps. With policymakers, industry leaders, and technical experts and renewable energy passionate gathered, the future of industrial heat pumps is being shaped here in Prague.
