With the end of the year in sight, we look back at the storm that struck Leest earlier this year. Over five episodes, our series ‘Guardians of the Grid’ tells the story of the tropical storm that hit Leest.       From a glorious summer day to great panic in Stad Mechelen, Episode 1 shows how gusts from a tropical storm toppled nine high-voltage poles. We take you back in time, back to Leest, and to our colleagues who immediately rolled up their sleeves to help the affected families and turn the electricity supply back on. Hello world, this is our new CEO Bernard Gustin We could tell you a lot about him, but we think it would be more fun if he introduced himself.

It took a while, but we have a new CEO! Bernard Gustin will be the new CEO of Elia Group from 15 January, demonstrating that our Board of Directors has opted for continuity. Bernard Gustin is no stranger to Elia Group, since he has served as Chairman of the Group's Board of Directors since 2015. The Group will be able to rely on his years of experience at the Group and his background in international business. From 15 January next year, Bernard will take over from Catherine Vandenborre, who has been serving as the Group’s interim CEO since late 2023. Catherine Vandenborre has decided to embark upon new personal and professional ventures. She will assist the Group during the transition phase until 30 June 2025. In addition to Bernard’s appointment, the Board has chosen Marco Nix to become Elia Group’s CFO from 1 April 2025. Mr. Nix has been the CFO of 50Hertz Transmission GmbH, our German subsidiary, for nearly 10 years. The entire Board of Directors and over 4,000 employees of Elia Group would like to express their sincere gratitude to Catherine Vandenborre for her leadership over the past 12 years in her role as CFO, as well as for her significant contribution to the Group’s success as interim CEO since September 2023.

What a beautiful day! Our interactive expo ‘Door de Wind’ in Ostend won 🥉 in the B2C category of the Belgian Event Awards! The exhibition is a collaboration between Toerisme Oostende vzw, Elia Transmission Belgium, DEME Group and Jan De Nul Group. With a booklet, children and their parents discover in Fort Napoleon how offshore wind energy is generated, transported and distributed all the way to our homes. We took them on the journey of electricity (Vonkies), from the wind turbines to the wall socket. With an important role for the seagulls and the Princess Elisabeth Island. With more than 25 000 enthusiastic visitors, a wonderful expo and a lovely location, we dare to declare ourselves the unofficial winner. But we naturally congratulate tonight's real winners: Boektopia! How nice to compete for a prize with such classy contestants.

Yes, in case you were wondering, we do have our own academy. No music or magic tricks but our own 'Political Academy’, where we offer up insights into our activities to new policymakers. Via a two-day training course, our staff in Belgium take the policymakers through Elia's operations and activities. How does our energy system work? What challenges are we facing as we build tomorrow's energy system? How to conjure a rabbit out of a hat ;) Participants are given the information they need to contribute to debates about energy in a meaningful way. The first session was dedicated to Elia as a grid operator. A crash course in electricity was given and concepts such as MW and MWh, current and voltage, AC and DC were covered. So now they know that AC/DC is not just the name of a metal band. To make these concepts as tangible as possible, they were also taken on a guided tour of Elia's Bruegel high-voltage substation. It was good to see that we were able to captivate so many Belgian members of parliament with explanations of our activities. #GuardiansOfTheGrid

A new Picasso on the market! Not a painting, but a new European platform for exchanging balancing energy from reserves for automatic frequency restoration (aFRR). This means that several European Transmission System Operators exchange electricity to keep the grid stable. With this cooperation, we maintain the frequency of the grid at 50 hertz. Our participation is important because it gives us access to the cheapest aFRR balancing energy in a wider area. Elia's access to PICASSO offers market players new opportunities to participate in an integrated European balancing energy market. Access to additional volumes of balancing energy also increases the security of the electricity system. First results show that the launch is a success, with significant exchanges through the platform and first results limiting imbalance prices. Wunderbar! Our colleagues at 50Hertz recently installed the FireFly bird protection marker for the first time on a 380 kilovolt line using a drone. That's great news for nature conservation and species protection, because after some technical checks, this means that old existing lines running through areas with bird populations worth protecting can also be fitted with the markers in the future without having to be switched off.

At Elia Group, innovation is a mindset. Being innovative is about curiosity, the desire to learn and exploring new possibilities. Once a year, we celebrate innovation during the Elia Group Innovation Week and the Innofair. Both in Brussels and Berlin, our colleagues are presenting their newest ideas and collaborations.
