Together with our researchers, staff, and many partners, the End-of-Life Care Research Group remains committed to conducting high-quality research that contributes to a society where everyone has access to excellent palliative and end-of-life care – in the broadest sense of the term. The Compassionate Week at Vrije Universiteit Brussel provided the perfect setting to mark the start of this new chapter. 💡 Wat als onze samenleving meer kon doen om mensen te ondersteunen bij ernstige ziekte, sterven, rouw en verlies? Dat is precies wat het multidisciplinaire CAPACITY-team, samen met tal van stakeholders, de afgelopen jaren onderzocht heeft. Dit project bracht het vaak onderbenutte potentieel in kaart van verschillende domeinen – zoals sociaal werk, het informele sociale netwerk, de buurt, en steden. It is a great honour to share with you our very first article that describes the EU NAVIGATE project as a whole and explains our expected outcomes and impacts to advance practice, science and society in relation to navigation interventions for older people with #cancer and their family caregivers. EU NAVIGATE is a 5-year EU-funded project that aims to adapt, implement, and evaluate a navigation intervention using an international pragmatic randomized controlled trial (RCT) in Belgium, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and Portugal. Embedded in its core are mixed-method process evaluation, cost-effectiveness analyses and pre-defined subgroup analyses focused on factors that are known to affect healthcare access and inequalities (2022-2027). Through this project, we hope to deliver high-quality evidence on a navigation intervention for older people with cancer in Europe and to develop practice and policy recommendations for sustainable implementation of navigation interventions in Europe and beyond. The coordination and implementation of such a large-scale cross-country project and research is not without hiccups. 🌿12 oktober was het de Dag van de Palliatieve Zorg, en die stond in het teken van Hoop – hoop op betekenisvolle momenten, een vredig levenseinde, en kwaliteitsvolle zorg. Een goed moment om stil te staan bij de cruciale rol van sociaal werkers als ‘hoopverleners’. Zij bieden niet alleen praktische steun, maar dragen ook bij aan sociale, spirituele en psychische zorg. Uit onze CAPACITY-studie (samen met LUCAS, KUL) bleek dat het potentieel van sociaal werkers in palliatieve zorg nog vaak onderbenut blijft. Van proactieve zorgplanning tot beleidsbeïnvloeding, hun impact kan groot zijn. Sylvia Hubar van Wijkgezondheidscentrum De Ridderbuurt vertelt over deze meerwaarde. Prof. Luc Deliens citeert in de afscheidsrede van zijn emeritaatsviering Allan Kellehear: "Sterven is een sociaal gebeuren met een medische component. Niet een medisch gebeuren met een sociale component." Een humanistische oproep om vanuit deze visie het onderzoek rond het levenseinde, maar ook de praktijk én het beleid over sectoren heen verder vorm te geven!
