In Barcelona 🇪🇸 for the Cross-Border Weather Summer 2024 meeting, a 2-day event held by the EUROCONTROL Network Manager (#NM) ✈️. The event brought together 60+ participants from across Europe, including representatives from #ANSPs, #airlines, #airports & EUMETNET to: 📌 evaluate this summer's cross-border weather procedure 📌 address network challenges 📌 review initiatives implemented across the network 📌 explore ways to enhance future collaboration. In addition to reflecting on summer 2024, we looked ahead to 2025, discussing key developments such as the 💻 new MET Expert Desk at the EURONTROL Network Manager Operations Centre (#NMOC) ❄ strategies to improve the network's resilience to adverse winter weather. Network flow & capacity management strongly relies on trust between actors & collaborative decision making (#CDM). Using weather analysis to build the network plan in the pre-tactical timeframe, or mitigate delays in the tactical phase, requires a critical level of confidence between NMOC and its stakeholders. The added value of having MET experts embedded in NMOC operations lies in producing & integrating a consolidated network weather assessment into the overall decision-making process.✈️ 👉 Next steps: following the success of the Cross-Border Weather Summer 2024 meeting, we'll be organising a dedicated weather workshop in March 2025. ⚽️ The goal? To build together 🤝 a stronger, more weather-resilient future for European aviation. Talking about #CivilMilitary cooperation & flexible use of airspace (#FUA) ✈️ with a high-level technical delegation from Japan 🇯🇵. 🤝 EUROCONTROL and Japan have been cooperating successfully for many years, and the 17K+ flights ✈️ a year to/from Japan are central to the important Asia-Pacific flow to the network, which has now fully recovered beyond pre-pandemic levels (year to date: ⬆️7% more flights vs 2019, and ⬆️22% vs last year). 👉 The delegation led by FUKUDA Hisashi from the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB), together with Takeshi Imagome & HAGIO Yoko from Research Company ReiMei, discussed: ✈ #FUA at our Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre (#MUAC), as well as visited the ops room and simulators ✈ #civilmilitary cooperation at our Brussels HQ with our Civil Military Coordination division, including the role of our Military Liaison Officers in network operations within our EUROCONTROL Network Manager Operations Centre (#NMOC). The visit fits into the wider picture of ongoing efforts to finalіse a Memorandum of Understanding with #JCAB which will strengthen 💪 our strategic partnership with Japan, with the aim of encompassing mutual areas of interest such as #FUA, #civilmilitary coordination, air traffic flow management (#ATFM), #CNS, advanced air mobility (#AAM) and #aviationsustainability.

🔟 new ops challenges from 8️⃣ #aviation stakeholders: our 9️⃣th #EATIN #AviationInnovation portfolio is up & running! Over the last two weeks, #EIH the EUROCONTROL Innovation Hub team has held 2 pitch sessions as part of the ideation phasethe 9th EUROCONTROL Air Transport Innovation Network #EATIN Cycle, as stakeholders challenge us to solve their hottest operational issues. 👉 The challenges presented by 4 airlines (Vueling, Austrian Airlines, SunExpress & Air Dolomiti), 3 airports (Berlin, Gatwick & SEA Milano) and 1 ANSP (DFS Germany) will now result in 📍 an analysis by #EATIN network members to determine which challenges could be most promising for operations, and to gauge interest in joining greenlighted projects, which will then feed into 📍 a feasibility assessment by EUROCONTROL's #EIH to select the most promising challenges. 👉 25,699 average daily flights ✈️ across the network in Week 46. That's 96% of 2019 traffic like the previous week – but traffic within Europe and to/from other regions ranges greatly, from ▼66% to ⬆️29% vs pre-pandemic. 📌 The largest network flow comparing last week to the same period in 2019 is intra-European with 19,463 daily ✈️ (95% of 2019). 📌 The most-improved network flow: ⬆️29% flights to/from North Africa (1,221 daily ✈️ & the 3rd largest flow behind to/from the Middle East on 1,257 daily ✈️ – currently ▼6% vs 2019, predominantly reflecting regional tensions). 📌 Within that overall 96%, just over half the network flows are above 2019 levels. All flows westward are up (⬆️10% South America on 202 daily ✈️, ⬆️9% North America on 1,116 daily ✈️ & ⬆️4% Caribbean on 179 daily ✈️), while flights to/from Asia are now similarly up at ⬆️13% (896 daily ✈️). 📌 Traffic eased as expected at a gentler rate than last week, by just ▼2%. 📊 In Week 45 network traffic ✈️ continued to drop as #airlines moved to winter schedules, our #EuropeanAviationOutlook shows. 👉 Key highlights for Week 45 (4-10 November): 📌 26,254 average daily flights, ⬇6% vs Week 44 overall with intra-European flights ⬇7% 📌 96% of pre-pandemic traffic overall – although varying considerably across network States 📌 96% of 2019 also for year-to-date traffic, ⬆5% vs 2023 traffic levels 📌 81.3% arrival punctuality, 7.5 percentage points better than the last edition of the #EuropeanAviationOverview, although bad weather ⛈️ continued to pose problems to the network 📌 ⬇52% en-route ATFM delays week-on-week (~16.8K daily delay minutes), but ⬆35% vs the same period in 2023 🔗 Download the latest European Aviation Overview here: https://lnkd.in/eT4_bwZu
