⛏️ This week, Euromines, industriAll European Trade Union, and their members, had the privilege of visiting the Guido Mine in Zabrze, Silesia, Poland – a remarkable example of how former #mining sites can be transformed into #educational museums. ⚙️ During the visit, participants explored the array of machinery and technologies historically used in extraction, gaining insights into the operational aspects of mining. ⛏️ At this week's #SODISEES workshop in Katowice (Poland), our members showcased exemplary initiatives driving progress in the mining industry: ✅ Związek Pracodawców Polska Miedź (Polish Copper Employers' Association) brought to light their strategies for fostering sustainable social dialogues, including collaborations with governmental and local authorities. Their highlight was KGHM Polska Miedź S.A.’s commitment to the vocational training of emerging mining talents. ✅ Hungarian Mining Association (Gábor Zelei), together with the Hungarian Trade Union have taken innovative steps by negotiating to extend the energy sector’s collective agreement to mining. Their balanced 5:5 Committee model is a pioneering approach promoting equal representation and partnership. ✅ Greek Mining Enterprises (ΥΝΔΕΣΜΟΣ ΜΕΤΑΛΛΕΥΤΙΚΩΝ ΕΠΙΧΕΙΡΗΣΕΩΝ) stressed the need for practical, action-oriented solutions that paves the way for substantial agreements. Now the real work on concrete measures needs to yield tangible results. For European mining, this means: 🌍 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐥: Strengthening proven state aid measures to incentivise #decarbonisation efforts while avoiding #carbon leakage. We need indirect cost #compensation for mining to ensure fair #competition. ⚡𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲: Let’s review the market #design and improve it wherever possible. ⛏️ Yesterday, Euromines joined the #SODISEES workshop with industriAll European Trade Union and national affiliates. Today, on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we celebrate the incredible contributions of women in STEM and their vital role in shaping the future of industries like mining and metals. From driving innovation to advancing sustainable practices, women in science and engineering are leading the way toward a more inclusive and responsible sector. However, despite progress, gender inequality remains a challenge. Globally, women account for just 15% of the total mining workforce—a pressing challenge that underscores the urgent need for action. 💡 Euromines President Emeritus, Mark Rachovides, shared his insights on the critical role of responsible mining in #Europe’s future and the urgent need for significant #investment to accelerate the clean energy transition in SLPress.gr’s article on responsible mining. 💶 He highlighted that Europe requires an annual €350 billion investment by 2030 to fund #decarbonisation, #infrastructure, and #technology advancements. 🌟 First big highlight this year: the Simplification Kick-Off moderated by Commissioners Dombrovskis, Albuquerque and Michael McGrath - and not to forget Michael Hager, Nicolò Brignoli and Elena Arveras. A bottom-up reality check to determine long hanging fruits and structural changes to foster and encourage good investments and business conduct. 💪 CSRD: Streamlining, identifying the core data points, and putting aside sector specific standards 🗑 Taxonomy: a 1000-page wide ivory tower that produces cumbersomely collected and audited zeroes in company reports, without any use in the models of investors to make strategic investment decisions - why not binning it when it's not fit for purpose? 🧭 CSDDD: widening the risk based approach, reforming the civil liability, and move its transition plans entirely into the CSRD 🚢 CBAM: Simplifying while increasing effectiveness. An important first step in the right direction to find the right balance between compliance requirements with actual business and investment needs - we look forward to continue to dialogue and advance with underpinning the sustainability transition with a regulatory framework that is fit for investments.
