European Biogas Association
Renewable Energy Semiconductor Manufacturing
The European Biogas Association is the leading European non-governmental organisation promoting renewable gas in Europe.
About us
European Biogas Association (EBA) was founded in February 2009 as a Belgian non-profit organisation aiming to promote the deployment of sustainable biogas production and use in Europe. This covers all energetic applications of biogas like heat, electricity and automotive fuel. EBA’s membership comprises national biogas associations, institutes and companies from over 20 countries all across Europe. The member associations cover the majority of producers, companies, consultants and researchers in the field of biogas within Europe. EBA’s strategy defines three priorities: establish biogas as an important part of Europe’s energy mix, promote source separation of household waste to increase the gas potential and support the production of biomethane as vehicle fuel.

After three years of research, the FER-PLAY EU project wraps up today—just as the European Commission presents its Vision for Agriculture and Food for the next five years. 🌱 Why circular fertilisers? Conventional fertilisers are made using finite, often imported, resources and employing in some cases energy-intensive production processes. To ensure high yields, these fertilisers are optimised for the fast release of nutrients, making them an attractive choice for farmers but a threat to soil and ecosystem health. Meanwhile, circular fertilisers are sourced from homegrown residues or by-products, ✔️ decreasing EU dependence on fertiliser imports and ✔️ boosting resource efficiency. Over the past three years, FER-PLAY has mapped and assessed circular fertilisers made from secondary raw materials across Europe, highlighting their benefits and barriers to adoption. Engaging with farmers, producers, and policymakers, the project identified key market uptake strategies. 📌 With the right policy support, innovation in nutrient recycling, and increased awareness, circular fertilisers could replace 3.77 million tonnes of conventional fertilisers by 2050 – a major step in the agroecological transition. The biogas and biomethane industry is a net contributor to methane emissions’ reduction, playing a crucial role in slashing emissions from the agriculture, energy, and waste sectors. Whilst the sector is already a net reducer of GHG emissions, best practises to further boost this net abatement remains very important. The European Biogas Association has already shed lights on the efforts of the European biogas industry to reduce methane emissions with sustainable biogas production. Our White Paper on methane emissions from AD plants highlighted key approaches: ✅ Advanced plant design & tech ✅ Regular self-inspections & emission monitoring ✅ Operator training for best practices. Harmen Dekker, EBA CEO, will join the upcoming event ‘Methane emissions from the biogas and biomethane supply chains’, organised by the Florence School of Regulation, on 19th February. This event will discuss the recent JRC Report on methane emissions, where EBA contributed valuable expertise. Don’t miss out! Leading biomethane offtakers have come together in the Biomethane Offtakers Declaration, released today, to call for higher support for biomethane production and offtake. Led by the European Biogas Association, this initiative emphasises biomethane’s essential role in achieving Europe’s climate neutrality objectives while ensuring the continent’s global competitiveness. Why it matters? Biogas and biomethane are key solutions for the decarbonisation of EU industries, offering the most cost-effective and scalable renewable energy sources available today. Produced locally, these renewable gases enhance energy security, reduce emissions, and position Europe as a global leader in sustainable and competitive technologies. What is this about? The Declaration brings together major biomethane offtakers committed to working alongside policymakers and the supply chain to drive sustainable production, rapid scaling, and widespread adoption of biomethane across Europe. Building on the momentum of the 2021 Biomethane Declaration, which helped secure the REPowerEU target of 35 bcm of biomethane production per year by 2030, this new initiative shifts the focus towards strengthening demand. What’s next? To unlock the full potential of biomethane, the Joint Offtakers Declaration on Sustainable Biomethane for Europe's Green Transition outlines key actions: 1️⃣ Establish Long-Term Targets and Supportive Frameworks 2️⃣ Enable Market-Driven Solutions 3️⃣ Ensure Political and Institutional Support This initiative will remain open for additional signatories to endorse the Declaration. For more information or to get involved, visit https://lnkd.in/e_g6hW_T 📌 Download the Declaration: https://lnkd.in/eJsjkSmZ 📌 Visit the website for more information on the declaration and its signatories: https://lnkd.in/e8eyrcxm 📌 Download the full press release: https://lnkd.in/ezRxRyZ7 #biometane #CleanIndustrialDeal #NetZero #BiomethaneOfftakersDeclaration

Today, the European Biogas Association, alongside over 140 companies and trade associations worldwide, is urging the GHG Protocol governance bodies to confirm that robust market instruments for renewable gases will be recognised in GHG inventories. With the GHG Protocol withdrawing guidance on biomethane certificates, we need clear climate reporting framework that enables investment in sustainable energy solutions. 🔎 The GHG Protocol is the world’s leading standard for measuring and managing greenhouse gas emissions. Its framework shapes corporate climate strategies and drives accountability in emission reduction efforts. Why does it matter? ✅ Renewable gases and their by-products are essential for decarbonising industries, transport, and buildings. ✅ To enable rapid deployment, a market-based approach is essential to overcome any economic, technical and environmental barriers and inefficiencies arising from the requirement of a physical (local) connection. In addition, the sector is also calling on the GHG Protocol to issue an interim statement in the first half of 2025, confirming that robust market instruments for renewable gases will be recognised in GHG inventories, providing stakeholders with clarity as final standards are being developed. 📌 This afternoon, EBA CEO Harmen Dekker will join a webinar hosted by EBA, ERGaR European Renewable Gas Registry aisbl, Eurogas, Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas, and World Biogas Association, where experts will discuss biomethane’s certification practices and why they should be recognised in the GHG Protocol framework.
