  • 😨 This Thursday, a critical decision will be made behind closed doors that will directly impact communities affected by mining. ⚒️ The Critical Raw Materials Board will discuss Strategic Projects under the Critical Raw Materials Act, with the potential to grant "overriding public interest" status to get quicker permits and easier investment. One project in the spotlight:  𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗼, 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗴𝗮𝗹. ❗🚨 Four open-pit mines are planned despite fierce local resistance, ongoing court cases, and national protests. This decision could set a dangerous precedent. We urge the EU: The pursuit of critical raw materials must not come at the expense of local communities and the environment. 🌎🤝 The EU should prioritise demand reduction and invest in solutions that truly benefit people and the planet, not just corporate profits. 👉 https://lnkd.in/eYSgCtee

As EU-Indonesia free-trade agreement negotiations accelerate, over 120 civil society groups warn of dire consequences: environmental devastation, climate crisis, and the erosion of rights for women, Indigenous Peoples, workers, and farmers. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀: ⚠️ Irresponsible mining driven by rising demand for #CriticalRawMaterials - leading to over-exploitation, extraction of natural resources and devastation environmental and social consequences ⚠️ Lack of value addition, undermining Indonesia’s industrial development ⚠️ Corporate protections for critical minerals supply in Indonesia, over the rights and welfare of the Indonesian people We urge the EU and Indonesia to stop the negotiations. It's time for a new model: a partnership based on solidarity, cooperation, and respect for sovereignty. The EU must support Indonesia's sustainable development, not demand unchecked access to its resources. Read our full statement: https://lnkd.in/ewyZbaaY

  • What does it take to make our economy truly circular? Our Head of Circular Economy Eva Maria Bille says it clear: the shift towards a better future begins with resource use reduction. ''A circular economy takes stock of what we have, the planet's boundaries, and how we can work with those. (...) Think of an overflowing sink: you might try mopping the floor, but it would be useless if you don’t turn off the tap first." And yet... 700 million people (9% of the world's population) remain chronically undernourished 🤯   The problem? Political, short-sighted, market-driven choices, shaped by speculation and clouded by greed, are ignoring the needs of both people and planet. This is not only driving inequity and hunger, but also crippling the ecosystems that sustain us 🚨   But things can be so different 🌄   With the right policies, and bold leadership from Europe's policymakers, the EU can pave the way for a food and farming system that ensures: ✅ universal access to healthy, nourishing food for all; ✅ decent working conditions and fair incomes for farmers; ✅ the preservation and restoration of ecosystems, the basis of our food production.   It's common sense, and the time for action is now ✊   Check this great article by Jennifer Clapp for IPES-Food ➡️ https://lnkd.in/etG7htfX

  • 💰 ≈€55 BILLION LOST EACH YEAR 💰 that's how much the failure to enforce existing EU environmental law costs the EU economy each year... 🫢 The European Commission, as the ‘Guardian of the Treaties,’ is responsible for making sure EU laws are upheld ⚖️ But in reality? It often takes decades to act. Meanwhile, EU countries continue to break the very laws that they themselves put in place, leading to billions in health costs and environmental damage🫰🤒🥀 So, what’s the solution? Join us on 6 March to hear insights from the European Court of Auditors and civil society on how to fix the system. Hint: Transparency is key! • 💔ITS NOT YOU… - This week, the European Commission published its 2025 Work Programme. This year’s agenda promises a “bolder, simpler, and faster” EU—but at what cost? With deregulation taking center stage, crucial environmental protections risk being rolled back. The Green Deal that won the hearts of European people in 2019 is largely sidelined, and the flirtation with industry interests continues with watered down environmental policies. Read today’s edition for our full reaction!   Meanwhile, AI’s soaring energy demands threaten Europe’s green transition. With data centers consuming as much electricity as Spain, its imperative that measures are taken now - in the honeymoon phase - to ensure AI systems operate within planetary boundaries in the long-term.   Our newsletter drops every Friday morning—make sure you’re signed up: https://lnkd.in/ePbXinCn

  • 📢 One week to go until the European Commission unveils its Vision for Food and Agriculture.   This is a defining moment. Will the EU rise to the challenge and set a course for a food and farming system that is fair, resilient, and sustainable? Or will we get more of the same—policies that fail farmers, consumers, and nature?   The 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲 made one thing clear: 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝘂𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. The Vision must reflect this and commit to: ✅ Supporting farmers in the transition to climate-resilient, nature-friendly agriculture; ✅ Ensuring healthy, sustainable food is accessible to all; ✅ Strengthening local food economies and fair supply chains; ✅ Protecting nature and soil health for future generations.   We cannot afford half-measures. The EU has a responsibility to act—boldly and decisively. We, alongside the EU Food Policy Coalition, stand ready to help turn ambition into reality.   Commissioner Christophe Hansen, the future of EU food and farming depends on the choices made now. Let’s make them count.   #FoodSystems #StrategicDialogue #OneHealth #FoodFuture #GoodFood4EU #EUagriculture

  • The European Commission has just published its 2025 Work Programme, outlining their broad plans and areas of focus for this year 📃🔍 While some elements of this Work Programme are worthy of praise, and have our full support, it is worrying to see Commission President Ursula von der Leyen backtracking on vital EU Green Deal goals that would benefit people and nature... 👎 As our Secretary General Patrick ten Brink notes: "𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙫𝙤𝙣 𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙇𝙚𝙮𝙚𝙣 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙀𝙪𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙣 𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝘿𝙚𝙖𝙡 𝙜𝙤𝙖𝙡𝙨, 𝙮𝙚𝙩 𝙩𝙤𝙙𝙖𝙮’𝙨 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙢𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙨 𝙖 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮. 𝙒𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙛𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙢𝙨 𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙞𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩, 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙙𝙚𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙜𝙤𝙖𝙡𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙚𝙛𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙚𝙙 -- 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙡𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙕𝙚𝙧𝙤 𝙋𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙢𝙗𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙀𝙐 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙨𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙣 𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙛 𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙜𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝙬𝙝𝙞𝙘𝙝 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙤𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙜𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙘𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙗𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙨, 𝙬𝙚𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙣 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜-𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙢 𝙨𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮-𝙡𝙚𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙚𝙧𝙤𝙙𝙚 𝙘𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙯𝙚𝙣𝙨’ 𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙗𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙨𝙩". We need action to protect our water, clean our air, ensure consumers are safe from harmful pollutants, and safeguard the natural foundations of our prosperity - and our survival 🌍 In the midst of the triple climate, nature and pollution crisis, we need our decisionmakers to be bold - and the EU now has the opportunity to not only deliver what people have demanded (hint: 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 "𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻"), but to lead the way in this change, and bring about the brighter future within our grasp.
