Have you read EPHA's new policy paper, Powering Health Equity? This paper highlights why a #PublicHealth-first approach is critical in transitioning to sustainable and just energy systems, because poor health can lead to energy poverty, and living in energy poverty exacerbates poor health. It’s a vicious cycle that demands urgent action. The paper present six actionable recommendations: 🔶Embedding health into all policy areas 🔶Strengthening energy poverty monitoring systems 🔶Prioritising buildings and energy solutions 🔶Developing targeted interventions for energy poverty 🔶Empowering communities to act 🔶Focusing on the needs of marginalised and vulnerable groups This is more than an equitable path—it’s a proven way to ensure the success of the energy transition. 🌫The connection between gas cooking and public health risks is clearer than ever, and the findings are alarming... Make sure to read EPHA’s latest policy paper which reveals that gas stoves in European homes may be linked to 36,000 premature deaths annually, alongside staggering economic costs estimated at €143 billion. This research, conducted by Universitat Jaume I, highlights the urgent need for action to combat indoor air pollution caused by gas cooking. 🚨 Why is this significant: 🔶Households using gas for cooking often experience indoor air pollution levels exceeding WHO standards. 🔶Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) levels from gas stoves pose significant health risks, particularly to children. 🔶New estimates suggest that hundreds of thousands of children could be suffering asthma symptoms related to gas cooking exposure. 💡 Our policy paper outlines critical recommendations, including: 🔶Phasing out unsafe gas cooking appliances. 🔶Leveraging the Social Climate Fund to ensure equitable access to cleaner cooking alternatives. 🔶Raising public awareness about the health risks associated with gas cooking. 🔶Supporting the development to advance EU action on indoor air quality. It is time for decisive action to transition away from gas cooking —not just for improving public health, but also for achieving Europe’s broader goals around air quality, energy transition, and fossil fuel phase-outs. 🔗Read the full policy paper here: https://lnkd.in/ewUcTAbe 🎥 Explore our expert video series: https://lnkd.in/eRCveqSq #IndoorAirQuality #CleanCooking #GasCookingRisks #HealthImpact #AirPollution Elżbieta Anna Czapka, Fenaer Pacientes, ISDE(International Society of Doctors for Environment) , Laura Reali , Sara Bertucci , Armando Ruiz, Francesco Romizi, Juana Mari Delgado-Saborit
