The Panel’s speakers were: - Reyer Will – MAGPIE Project Manager; - Jorge d’Almeida – DYNAPORT Project Manager; - Elisabete Arsénio – ADMIRAL Project Manager from LNEC. This debate focused on the European projects that are at the forefront of the European port energy transition. The MAGPIE project has the ambition to force a breakthrough in the supply and use of green energy carriers in transport to, from and within ports. The DYNAPORT project that aims to develop new optimization and coordination tools for ports and ships that both reduce the ship’s fuel consumption and increases port efficiency and the ADMIRAL project, that seeks to develop and pilot AI-driven solutions for managing logistics supply chains, including related missions to reduce transport and logistics emissions and increase transparency, resilience of logistics supply chains, and stakeholder cooperation. Making EU ocean governance more integrated, collaborative, and better optimised for the Green Deal implementation

The EU ETS rules kick-in next year for maritime transport 🚢👨⚖️ Starting from 2025, large ships will need to use allowances to cover reported and verified emissions that are subject to carbon tax. Each year, the amount of emissions for which allowances need to be surrendered will increase 40% -> 70% -> 100% The EU is sending a clear signal it's serious about tackling emissions from shipping. The BIG QUESTION is: will it succeed? 🤔 Our study found that ETS implementation is not without challenges. It is hampered by several institutional barriers. To give you some examples.. 🫰 Inadequate incentives: The way things stand at the moment, carbon tax is less expensive than biofuel. So, purchasing allowances is cheaper than switching to alternative fuels that really make a difference to the environment. 🥸 Evasion and carbon leakage: If cargo is loaded and unloaded between ports-of-call in the EU/EEA, 100% emissions are subject to the ETS. But if one of the ports-of-call is outside the EU/EEA, the ETS applies only to 50% of emissions. Shipping companies may therefore start including third-country ports to their journey more often to lessen the tax burden. 💶 Profiting from ETS: How do ship owners compensate for their responsibility to cover emissions? By passing on the costs to cargo owners (shippers). The problem is that the way in which these surcharges are calculated are far from transparent and they also come with a very high markup Learn about other barriers ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/dHtWaG2J And of course big kudos to the research team Judith van Leeuwen, Moses Adjei, PhD, and Hélder Pereira for extracting these insightful findings from the ongoing case-study work 👏
