The Maison du MédiaLab, programme that aims at tripling the number of correspondents from Eastern Europe is now fully operational. It provides correspondents from Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine with a dynamic space for professional development, networking, and innovation. The programme ensures strong editorial support, direct connections with EU & NATO institutions, and expert guidance from media specialists. This month, our six correspondents have settled in, engaging in impactful meetings and editorial production. CONCERT INVITATION - a commemoration to the victims of the war in Ukraine upon the three year anniversary of the war The Brussels International Academy of Music (BR.I.M.A.), with the support of the Mission of Ukraine to the European Union and the Embassy of Ukraine in the Kingdom of Belgium, organise a concert on February 20, 2025, in the Church Notre-Dame des Victoires au Sablon, marking the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. 💬 “The EU media are dwarfs facing giants.” – Christophe Leclercq During the VUB Lecture Series on Digital Media in Europe, Christophe Leclercq answered student’s question about the future of EU media. He highlighted the challenges European media faces, from competing with the platforms to dealing with disinformation and the rise of AI. Key points from the discussion: 📊 EU media is undergoing consolidation—who will thrive, and who might struggle? ⚖️ Regulation is evolving fast (DSA, DMA, AI Act). The question is, how to implements them efficiently? 💡 Building a truly pan-European media platform remains a complex but essential goal. Christophe also encouraged students to reflect on their future careers—whether in journalism, media management, policy, or communications—and consider how they can contribute to the sector’s growth. 📰 Euractiv & Politico Europe newsroom exchange 🇪🇺 As part of the Maison du MédiaLab programme, our resident journalists engaged in an insightful exchange of ideas with colleagues from Euractiv and POLITICO Europe about EU and NATO coverage, challenges and perspectives. 🔹 At Euractiv, discussions centred on the challenges of policy-driven journalism, multilingual reporting, and the regional impact of EU decisions, particularly from an Eastern European perspective. 🔹 At Politico Europe, the focus shifted to the dynamics of political reporting, the nuances of covering EU institutions, and how media narratives differ between Western and Eastern Europe. This exchange reinforced the importance of collaboration within the Brussels press corps, fostering dialogue on press freedom, cross-border journalism, and the role of independent media in shaping European democracy. 🇪🇺MEPs Nathalie Loiseau (Renew Europe / France), Petras Austrevicius (Renew Europe / Lithuania), and Michael Gahler (EPP / Germany) called to #FreeMziaAmaghlobeli from the European Parliament today. Thank you! 🇬🇪The unlawful detention of the Director of independent media outlets Netgazeti and Batumelebi is a stark reminder: Georgia’s ruling regime is waging war on independent journalism. Today marks day 25 of Mzia’s hunger strike. She was hospitalised yesterday, but she has not stopped hunger strike. Since the start of the #GeorgiaProtests in November 2024, more than 80 journalists have been targeted, injured, and harassed. 🚩Meanwhile, ‘Georgian Dream’ has rushed forward a dangerous media law - one that grants the regime power to dictate media objectivity, impose arbitrary ethical standards, and restrict foreign funding. This is a direct attack on press freedom that will further suffocate independent journalism in Georgia. 🤝International solidarity is crucial. Our voice is stronger together. ❗️We demand personal and financial sanctions against the regime before it’s too late. #SanctionIvanishvili #SanctionGeorgianDream
