Euroseeds is the voice of the European seed sector. We are #GrowingTheFuture.
About us
www.euroseeds.eu Euroseeds merges national seed associations as well as individual companies into one single EU wide umbrella organization representing the totality of the European seed industry active in research, breeding, production and marketing of seeds of agricultural, horticultural and ornamental plant species. It was founded in November 2000 and is located in Brussels, Belgium. “Plants from seed are the origin of all food, provide innovative and environmentally friendly industrial products and beautify our landscape.” Euroseeds’s mission is to work for a fair and proportionate regulation of the European seed industry, freedom of choice for customers in supplying seeds as a result of innovative, diverse technologies and production methods and for effective protection of intellectual property rights relating to plants and seed. In that sense, Euroseeds lobbies on all seed related issues and specifically on: - seed marketing, incl. GM and organic seed - Intellectual Property Rights (Plant Breeders Rights, Biotech Patents, etc.) - plant/seed health (phytosanitary rules; seed treatments) - biodiversity and access to genetic resources - land use and food production - competitiveness of the EU agri-food chain It also aims at solving collective problems of its membership like e.g. market access in third countries.

Aarhus Universitet spinout Healthycrop won the prestigious InnovAction Award at the Euroseeds 2024 💪🚀💡 Healthycrop founded by Professor and Head of Section Henrik Brinch-Pedersen from the Department of Agroecology - Aarhus University, recently won the InnovAction Award at Euroseeds 2024 for their innovative plant protection technology. CEO Pernille Ollendorff Hede received the award and highlighted the company’s progress in fungal resistance in field crops. She expressed her excitement about the award: “We are very excited to have participated in the InnovAction competition in Copenhagen. For us, it is the perfect stage to showcase our progress in developing field crops with natural and durable fungal resistance. Our new resistance mechanism, based on a natural plant protease, has proven to provide a high degree of fungal resistance in both maize and barley, and we are now expanding to a wide range of other field crops.” Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/dybZpDef #innovation #sustainability Conny Lund Tegtmeier Morten Holmager

Viacheslav Fabianovich Savitsky (1902-1965) and his wife Elena Ivanova Kharechko-Savitska (1901-1986) were geneticists and plant breeders at what is now the Ukrainian Sugar Industry Research Institute in Kiev (Ukraine). Viacheslav was particularly interested in the selection of monogerm sugar beet varieties. Hybridisation experiments showed that monogermism is a recessively inherited trait and that monogerm seeds had some undesirable characteristics. Due to political developments under Stalin, the Savitskys left the Soviet Union during the Second World War. In 1947, they managed to emigrate to the USA, where they made significant contributions to sugar beet research, first in Salt Lake City, Utah, and from 1961 in Salinas, California. After finding monogerm seeds on propagation plots in Oregon, Viacheslav identified one line, SLC 101, as suitable for further research. In the course of this, the self-fertilising cultivars had to be converted into self-sterile cultivars. Moreover, resistance against the Beet Curly Top Virus (BCTV) had to be established. It is largely thanks to the work of the Savitskys that sugar beet growers have been able to use genetically monogerm, high-performance sugar beet seed since the 1960s.
