Promote the debate on the future of work by bringing progressive approaches into the forefront.
About us
The Brussels-based Competence Centre on the Future of Work was founded in 2021 by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung. We strive for a future of work where the benefits of digital technology are widely shared, and go hand in hand with quality jobs and social protection for all. Therefore, we pay special attention to social dialogue and regulation to ensure that the digital transformation reinforces, rather than corrodes, the European commitment to social partnership and workers´ rights. As a think tank and policy adviser, we regularly publish papers and reports and bring together stakeholders to discuss the future of work in various formats – from roundtables and workshops to conferences and an annual Summer School. In addition, we host a Digital Archive with relevant publications, podcasts and videos, and run the fortnightly Wage Against the Machine newsletter. The Competence Centre focuses on the following three priority areas: - Workers rights in the Digital Age - Inclusive Digital Transformation - Platformisation of Work FES Future of Work supports all FES offices and their partners, and works especially closely with the Brussels-based colleagues at FES EU Office and FES Just Climate. In our daily activities, we cooperate with a wide range of stakeholders, including trade unions, NGOs, academia and policy-makers – especially at EU level.

We’re living turbulent times. Not the least in #Digital policy. It is time that the European Commission stands up to the tech oligarchs and defends the European rule of law online. We need to enforce the digital acquis to protect the European citizens and democracy. And we need to provide for alternatives, because the dependency on foreign digital infrastructure is making Europe vulnerable. That is exactly what we discussed this week FEPS Europe and you can watch the recording below. 👇 Thank you for our experts, the bright minds of the likes of Francesca Bria, Johnny Ryan, Sophie Bloemen, Matthias Pfeffer and Leevi Saari for leading the way and advice policy makers on the actions to take. This is not the time and sit back, it is time to realise that we need to double down on enforcing the European digital rules and start investing in public digital infrastructures that makes Europe less dependent on Big Tech platforms. It will be costly and difficult to build a Eurostack, but we have the knowledge and resources here in Europe if put our weight behind it. The time of talking about the problems is over, it’s time for action and building solutions. Thank you Marie Hasdenteufel and Justin Nogarede of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung FES Future of Work for the collaboration.

🚀 This week our colleague, Oliver Philipp had a great opportunity to join the event “New Solidarity for an AI-Disrupted Economy”, organised by RadicalxChange Foundation, Global Solutions Initiative Sciences Po & Stiftung Mercator GmbH. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dxk4vCjK The key takeaways from the conference inputs, debate and exchange with Ana Dujic, Paul Nemitz, Aart Jan De Geus, Matt Prewitt, Victoria Ivanova, Chris Boos, Christian Kastrop, Miapetra Kumpula-Natri 👉 Collective bargaining is a critical ingredient in the AI revolution to protect workers' rights. However, trade unions face the challenge that collective workforces might disappear due to the increasing individualisation of work through AI. 👉An important question is the issue of data ownership in the context of work. 👉The human-centered approach to AI needs to be defended globally 👉The issue of AI in the workplace, along with its impacts and challenges, requires political leadership but is often still a low-priority political issue.

How should Europeans react when Elon Musk uses X for his right-wing propaganda? What about the latest policy change announced by Mark Zuckerberg of META that confronts the EU's legal requirements for his platforms? With the changes on the other side of the Atlantic, Europe's dependency on US firms to provide digital infrastructure is becoming an urgent political issue. It is impacting our democracies and leaves our economy vulnerable. That is why we will discuss, on Tuesday, 14 January, from 12.00 to 13.30, the latest policy study by FEPS Europe and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, 'Time to build a European digital ecosystem'. Leading experts in digital policy, such as Francesca Bria, Johnny Ryan, Sophie Bloemen, Leevi Saari, Matthias Pfeffer, Annarosa Pesole, and Fabian Ferrari, give their recommendations for the EU's digital policy in the new legislative term. The EU needs to stand up to the pressure of Big Tech firms and enforce the digital regulations passed to protect citizens and society. At the same time, we must build capacity by investing in Digital Public Infrastructure and an industrial policy that will support European initiatives in the digital transformation. You can register through the FEPS website to follow this debate online: https://lnkd.in/eqsZyms2 If you’d like to attend the in-person meeting, please send me a message and do not hesitate to contact us if you wish to learn more about this research or collaborate with us on the topic of digital policy. Thank you to my colleagues and co-editors Marie Hasdenteufel and Justin Nogarede for the great collaboration on this project and publication.

Today is International Migrants Day! In the European Union, there are approximately 9.5 million domestic workers, the majority of whom are women and migrants, many of them undocumented. The International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 189 seeks to protect the rights of domestic workers and enhance their working conditions. This convention provides a robust framework for recognizing the value of domestic work and ensuring adequate protections. However, only nine EU countries have ratified this important convention: Belgium, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Norway, Sweden, and Spain. In her policy brief, 👉 Towards the Inclusion of Migrant Domestic Workers: Renewing Efforts Towards Ratification of ILO Convention No. 189, Vera Pavlou examines the limitations of the recently adopted EU Care Strategy and highlights key lessons from the ratification experiences of ILO Convention No. 189 across different Member States. The brief concludes with a series of recommendations, both short- and long-term, aimed at improving the conditions of paid domestic workers and enhancing care provision in the EU. Addressing the care crisis facing our societies requires ensuring decent working conditions for all home-based care workers, whether migrant or national. 👉 In the short term, efforts should focus on eliminating exclusions and ensuring equal rights for domestic workers, aligning their protections with those of other workers. 👉In the long term, we must work towards establishing egalitarian and socially sustainable care models that prevent social dumping at both local and global levels. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dwsXpj74 #carework #SocialProtection UNI Global Union, Mark Bergfeld, European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU), Adam Rogalewski, Dalila Ghailani, Bart Vanhercke
