Join this special online event "Bird Alert: Current challenges and approaches to HPAI" February 5, 2025 4:00 - 5:00 pm UTC+1 In recent years, the prevalence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5 viruses has risen sharply worldwide, causing mass die-offs in wild birds and poultry. Since 2021, H5N1 activity has increased globally, with the current strain (clade 2.3.4.4b) crossing species barriers, infecting new hosts, and adapting to mammals. The ongoing panzootic (2020–2023) poses significant challenges, threatens human health through viral adaptation and demands urgent action. ️Prof. Thijs Kuiken will present how fur farming poses risks for future influenza pandemics and Saidal Bah will lead us through the country’s situation and response towards the HPAI outbreak in wildbird in The Gambia in 2023! Big News: Launch of the First-Ever National One Health Framework! I am incredibly proud to share that today marks the launch of the National One Health Framework, a groundbreaking achievement in our collective fight against zoonotic diseases and our efforts to advance public health preparedness. As one of the three leaders (with Casey Barton Behravesh and Lisa Branum) for this initiative and the signer for USDA, I had the privilege of working alongside the CDC, DOI, and 23 federal agencies spanning 8 federal departments to develop this shared roadmap for the next five years (2025–2029). This framework establishes a unified mission, vision, and set of goals to strengthen collaboration across human, animal, plant, and environmental health sectors. Together, we are taking critical steps to tackle zoonotic diseases and other One Health challenges head-on. This milestone is more than a document—it’s a call to action for multisectoral collaboration, innovative problem-solving, and enhanced public health preparedness across the nation. Why it matters: · Zoonotic diseases, which spread between animals and humans, are an urgent global health priority. · This framework provides a strategic pathway for the U.S. to address these challenges while fostering resilience, safeguarding ecosystems, and protecting public health. I am deeply grateful for the hard work and dedication of all involved. This collaborative effort represents a new era of interagency coordination to ensure we’re better prepared for emerging health threats. Let’s build a healthier future together. Please share widely to amplify the importance of this historic initiative! https://lnkd.in/eUQJDMuQ #OneHealth #PublicHealth #ZoonoticDiseases #USDA #CDC #DOI #Collaboration #Leadership

Five years ago today, I participated in my very first press conference with WHO spokesperson Tarik Jašarević. It happened to be on the cluster of pneumonia of unknown etiology in China, later called #COVID19. At the time, there were 41 confirmed cases. By 14 January 2020, the World Health Organization was sending notifications to all of our member states through our official channels, publishing Disease outbreak news of what we knew about the unfolding event; holding numerous teleconferences with experts around the world on key technical areas; had published the first PCR protocol with support from Chartié University, USCDC, Public Health England (named at the time), University of Hong Kong, Institute Pasteur, Erasmus and others that kick started the production of diagnostic kits; a full package of technical guidance for "nCoV" including surveillance recommendations, IPC, risk communication, clinical care, testing, disease commodity package, and more... (full time line here: https://lnkd.in/ei-Q_kyC). Did we want to know more, do more at the time? Absolutely. I am so grateful for all who worked to better understand this pathogen, who shared information, who conducted studies, who joined expert networks, who helped people. From Min 2:52 to ~23 min. https://lnkd.in/etzbpr84 (thought this would be my first and last presser...) All of WHO's COVID-19 press conferences (and now more broadly on health threats) with Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Dr Mike Ryan and many other incredible WHO colleagues can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eAmppz_a Thanks for the leadership of Dr Tedros and Mike Ryan, to all of the teams at WHO around the world-from the disease specific, operational, technical specialties, communications (🙏 Gabriella Stern), in DG's office, behind the scenes-for the work to be able to share accurate, timely, nuanced and helpful information through these press briefings...and then to come back the next day and do it all again as we learn more and adapted our strategies and advice. #ProudToBeWHO
