European scientists fighting influenza / hot topics in influenza - RSV disease - COVID-19
About us
Scientists have a moral obligation to help reduce the burden of influenza in society. We know that flu vaccines can be life-saving for patients at risk and we know that not giving antivirals to critical patients can be fatal. And still, in Europe, seasonal influenza claims more lives than traffic accidents. ESWI therefore believes that experts must continuously explain the benefits of influenza control, prevention and treatment to the general public. And they should be clear about the scientific uncertainties too. After all, research on influenza is aiming at a “moving target”. Enhancing public health protection against influenza is a goal that scientists clearly cannot achieve on their own. They need to reach out and work with the many groups of people who need scientific evidence in their daily practice: public health officials, healthcare professionals, at-risk patients and the elderly. That is precisely why ESWI has established constructive working relations with a multitude of stakeholder organizations. In fact, ESWI has now created a network of supporters that work with the latest scientific insights to formulate and disseminate accurate public health messages. To voice these scientifically sound messages, the ESWI network develops tailor-made tools. We tap into different financial resources to fund our projects. Yet, in all circumstances, we remain an independent organization of socially-concerned members and partners, none of whom ever receives a fee or an honorarium for their ESWI work. After all, ESWI’s partners all share the objective to improve public health protection against influenza, turning the ESWI network into a unique and effective organization to address influenza issues in Europe.

ECDC Chief Scientist & ESCAIDE Scientific Committee Chair Piotr Kramarz closing ESCAIDE2024: These were three incredible days, full of ideas, inspiration, and a strong sense of purpose, which we need in our daily work. We talked a lot about collaboration and working together across sectors to improve preparedness, SOLIDARITY was mentioned multiple times, as THE key when it comes to preparedness & response to crises - and we heard that from people facing a truly unprecedented one. We went beyond numbers, and talked about values - equity, fairness, inclusion and diversity. We discussed AI in lengths, but also heard a very clear message - that it is important to remain humane. I noticed many lively conversations in the hallways during coffee breaks, and moments of real camaraderie - the starting points of a genuine, close collaboration. While #ESCAIDE2024 ends now, I hope this ESCAIDE spirit will stay around, for long. I am also very happy to announce that #ESCAIDE will now move to my home-country - Poland, for its 2025 edition. #ESCAIDE2025 - Warsaw and online - 19-21 November 2025!

🆕 Jakub Dvořáček presented in Brussels the pharmaceutical policy and the steps taken by the Czech Republic to ensure the availability of medicines for patients. On #EUFluDay #ESWI #SciencePolicy roundtable in #Prague 🇨🇿 🗣 Jakub Dvořáček highlighted that the effort to raise vaccination rates, particularly for #influenza & #COVID19, is currently falling short, which has cost-related consequences. High antiviral use serves as a sign of low vaccination rates, with the Czech Republic’s annual average consumption of 30.000 packs per capita, being twice that of comparable EU Member States. ➕ ℹ ➡ https://lnkd.in/e36ZMXWz
It was an honour to present the pharmaceutical policy and the steps taken by the Czech Republic to ensure the availability of medicines for our patients, our contribution to the development of the Critical Medicine Alliance recommendations and the comprehensive proposals within the Pharmaceutical package at the Politico Healthcare summit in Brussels. Thank you to all those with whom I had the opportunity to personally discuss their views on security of supplies and the future competitiveness of the EU in the field of pharmaceuticals. Traditionally, a big thank you to our colleagues at the Permanent Representation of the Czech Republic in Brussels and especially to the entire team at the Ministry of Health and the State Institute for Drug Control.

Health Day at COP29 Azerbaijan! HEALTH AMBITION As we face the intertwined crises of climate change and health, today marks a pivotal moment in our collective journey. The launch of the Baku Continuity Coalition for Climate and Health brings together the consecutive leadership of UNFCCC UN @COP countries committing to consistent climate action with health at its heart: COP26 - UN Climate Change Conference UK 🇬🇧 - COP27 - UN Climate Change Conference Egypt 🇪🇬- UN Climate Change Conference COP28 UAE 🇦🇪COP29 Azerbaijan 🇦🇿 @COP30 Brasil 🇧🇷 This coalition represents a promise—to protect the most vulnerable, strengthen health systems, and ensure that climate action delivers tangible health benefits for all. With 91 countries now engaged in #ATACH, World Health Organization is building on the momentum of past COPs to support leaders to embed health-oriented climate action, and climate-resilient health systems. Together, we will: 🌱 Address the health impacts of climate change, from infectious diseases to malnutrition. 🔬 Drive innovation, research, and policy that align climate action with health goals. 🤝 Foster partnerships across sectors, from governments to civil society and the private sector. This is more than a call to action—it's a movement to ensure that health equity and sustainability are central to the climate agenda. Today is the European Antibiotic Awareness Day. It’s a good moment to recall the massive health threat of anti-microbial resistance and how best to tackle it. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) causes 35 000 deaths in the EU every year. By 2050, it could contribute to over 200 million deaths (directly or indirectly) globally. Without urgent action, we are facing a grim future where antibiotics no longer work. The EU has put AMR at the heart of its One Health policy making for many years, including with: 🎯 Targets to monitor antibiotic consumption and AMR infections in humans, 🐮 Rules to limit the use of antibiotics in farm animals and prohibit their use as growth-promotors, 💧 Environmental controls to monitor antibiotic residues in water and soil, 🔬 Major investment in research and development, including for the development of novel antibiotics, 👛 #EU4Health funding to support Member States’ actions against AMR, 💪 An active stance internationally, which contributed to the successful UNGA Declaration on AMR this year. The fight against anti-microbial resistance is not only a matter of policy though. Each one of us has a role to play – including responsible use of antibiotics and basic hygiene and infection prevention measures. Our new awareness raising campaign #BeatTheBug on the Fortnite platform aims to encourage young people to play their part.
