In March 2025, the Second World Health Organization Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health is set to take place. As representatives of the health community, we urge governments, world leaders and decision-makers to commit to strong, bold actions to ensure clean air for all, with a call to action co-initiated by HEAL, our members European Respiratory Society and European Lung Foundation and others. Add your signature to the petition to demand clean air! ⚠️✍️ https://ow.ly/umkT50UUGPF 🌍 Air pollution is affecting the health of billions of people across the globe. It is responsible for the deaths of at least 7 million people globally every year, with the vast majority due to noncommunicable (chronic) diseases such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and lung cancer. 💙 Breathing polluted air damages every organ in the body – not just our lungs, but the heart, circulation, kidneys, livers, eyes, bones, and many more. Air pollution impairs thinking, affects behavioural development in children and contributes to dementia in older people. Pregnant women face higher risks of complications like stillbirth and miscarriage. Babies are more likely to be born early or small, increasing their chances of becoming sick later in life. #AirPollution #CleanAirNow

The ongoing negotiations between the Council of the European Union, European Parliament and European Commission on the revision of the EU Toy safety regulation are a crucial opportunity to protect children from harmful chemicals. To ensure the highest level of protection, it must include the following: 🟠 A ban on PFAS - the #ForeverChemicals 🟠 A ban on the #bisphenols group 🟠 A broadening of the chemicals restriction mechanism to include all the most harmful chemicals 🟠 The inclusion of the precautionary principle in the operational part of the law We wrote a letter to EU member states calling on their leadership to ensure children and their families are protected. 🤰🧪Maternal weight and exposure to chemicals, such as PFOA and mercury, are key risk factors for childhood obesity, according to research from ATHLETE, for which HEAL is a project partner. 🚸One in ten children are living with obesity across Europe, which puts them at high risk of metabolic disorders and cardiovascular disease later in life. 🩺This new study could help both health professionals and policymakers develop strategies prevent childhood obesity and its long-term health effects. Reducing the health cost of climate change: what needs to be done? Europe is heating twice as fast as any other continent in the world. More frequent heatwaves, drier conditions and consequently more wildfires like those seen in California this year are a reality facing Europe, too. A new assessment from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, a HEAL member, warns that by the end of the century, heat-related deaths will far exceed those caused by cold winters. The health costs associated with climate change are staggering and can only be mitigated with urgent action. HEAL calls for health to be at the forefront of all climate mitigation and adaptation measures, such as the proposal for a 90% CO2 reduction target for 2040 and the EU Climate Adaptation Plan. Read the article: https://lnkd.in/eETesbXA Join HEAL in advocating for science-based climate action that leads to a healthier Europe. Share this post. 🌍⏩ #ClimateAction #ClimateEmergency

People living near factories that produce PFAS or sites where these chemicals are frequently used are widely known to be exposed to their harmful effects. However, the health risks extend beyond these communities. A recent study from our partner Tegengif (Erase All Toxins) demonstrates how widespread PFAS contamination is across the Netherlands, highlighting the need to act now to #BanPFAS and protect health. To mark #WorldCancerDay, our partner Association of European Cancer Leagues is calling for an end to inequalities in cancer prevention and care.
This World Cancer Day is a reminder that cancer doesn’t discriminate - but where you live or how much you earn can determine your cancer risk or access to live-saving medicines. Four years after the launch of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan, inequalities in cancer prevention and care remain a glaring issue in today’s European Union. We call on all EU policymakers to take urgent action to close these gaps and deliver on the unfinished commitments in the fight against cancer. 👉 Read the opinion piece by ECL’s Executive Director, Wendy Yared, in Social Europe: https://lnkd.in/d-JXUC9U #WorldCancerDay
