  • Women in Politics: The Journey Towards Equal Representation This week we celebrate the European Gender Equality Week. One hundred years after women in many EU countries first gained the right to vote or entered parliamentary roles, gender balance in politics remains an elusive goal. While progress has been made—such as the European Parliament achieving one of the most gender-balanced representative assemblies globally—women are still significantly underrepresented in many areas of political decision-making. The Case for Gender Equality in Politics The benefits of gender balance in politics extend far beyond representation. It strengthens democracy, fosters innovation, and ensures that policies reflect the needs of society more holistically. Political parties, institutions, and governments all stand to gain from equitable gender participation, both in public perception and in decision-making quality. Persistent Challenges The obstacles women face are multifaceted and deeply rooted in societal structures. Among these, violence against women active in politics stands out as a critical barrier. Female politicians endure both political violence and gender-based violence, discouraging many from pursuing or continuing in political careers. Additionally, disparities in campaign funding and the lack of support networks further exacerbate these challenges. Strategies for Change The European Union has committed to achieving gender balance in political participation through robust initiatives: ◾️ Legislation and Policy: Adoption of electoral quotas in some Member States has proven effective in closing the gender gap. The EU Directive on combating violence against women aims to create minimum standards across Member States for addressing gender-based violence. ◾️ Supportive Frameworks: The EU's accession to the Istanbul Convention signals its dedication to combating violence against women. Ongoing efforts to regulate online harassment as part of broader cyber-violence legislation provide critical support for women in digital political spaces but political parties, parliaments, and institutions, apart from platforms should take responsibility as well. ◾️Civic and Institutional Efforts: Civil society, media, and political parties play a crucial role in reshaping narratives and empowering women to enter and thrive in politics. Educational programs and mentorship initiatives are essential for fostering the next generation of women leaders. Moving Forward Achieving gender parity in politics is not just an issue of fairness—it’s a democratic imperative. Addressing structural barriers, ensuring safe environments, and fostering inclusive policies are vital steps toward realizing this goal. The EU's steadfast commitment to these principles is paving the way for transformative change, but it requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders—governments, institutions, and citizens alike. #WomenInPolitics #GenderEquality #Democracy

  • 📉 A Step Back for Gender Equality in the European Commission The new European Commission, set to take office on December 1, 2024, includes 11 women out of 26 members—a decline to 42.3% female representation compared to the previous Commission, which achieved 50% gender parity for the first time. This shift mirrors a broader trend as the European Parliament has also experienced a drop in women’s representation. ⚖️ These numbers highlight the urgent need to keep pushing for gender equality at the highest levels of EU leadership. Representation matters—not just for fairness, but for crafting policies that reflect Europe's diversity. 📊Why Representation Matters: Diverse leadership reflects the values of unity, equality, and collaboration that the EU champions. It’s not just about fairness; it’s about creating better policies that represent the voices and experiences of all citizens. ✔️ History was made with Hadja Lahbib, marking her as the first woman of color to serve as a European Commissioner. She will oversee Humanitarian Aid, Crisis Preparedness and Management, Civil Protection, and Equality, bringing vital diversity to the EU's executive leadership. While this milestone deserves recognition, the overall gender imbalance and declining representation of women across EU institutions remind us of the need for stronger action to achieve true equality. 💬 What steps should the EU take to close these gaps? Let us know in the comments! #GenderEquality #DiversityMatters #RepresentationMatters #HerEU #EuropeanCommission #WomenInPolitic

https://lnkd.in/d3_8rTJu Violence Against Women in Politics: A Threat to Democracy Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we turn our attention to a pressing issue that undermines not only women but the foundations of democracy itself: violence against women in politics. From online abuse to physical intimidation, women leaders and candidates face significant challenges that deter their participation and silence their voices. This is more than a personal issue—it’s a systemic problem that excludes half of society from decision-making spaces and weakens democratic systems. The Challenges Women Face 1️⃣ Online Abuse and Misogyny: Digital platforms have become breeding grounds for threats and harassment aimed at silencing women leaders. 2️⃣ Physical Intimidation and Violence: Many women in politics face threats to their safety, discouraging their participation in public life. 3️⃣ Structural Inequalities: Gender-based discrimination and institutional barriers further perpetuate inequality in leadership. Why This Matters When women are silenced, we all lose. Violence against women in politics isn’t just about individuals; it’s about the health of our democracies. Excluding women means excluding diverse perspectives, innovative ideas, and fair representation. A political system that tolerates violence is a political system that fails us all. What Needs to Change If we are serious about fostering equality and safeguarding democracy, we must take action: ✔️ Implement stricter laws to protect women in politics from violence and harassment. ✔️ Hold digital platforms accountable for addressing and preventing online abuse. ✔️ Invest in support networks that empower women leaders and candidates. ✔️ Promote cultural change with zero tolerance for violence in political spaces. The Path Forward Addressing violence against women in politics requires collective action. Governments, civil society, political organizations, and individuals all have a role to play in ensuring that women can lead without fear. Let’s stand together to build a future where democracy truly represents all voices. 🔗 Join the conversation: How can we create a safer, more inclusive environment for women in politics? Share your thoughts and ideas in the comments. 📣 Tag a woman leader who inspires you and help amplify their voice! #EliminationOfViolenceAgainstWomen #WomenInPolitics #GenderEquality #Democracy

  • ❓ "Why would any women go into politics" ❓ 📢 Politics concerns the lives of men and women equally. Yet, all around the world we see discomforting numbers of unequal representation of men versus women in politics. Women's needs and experiences are therefore by default undermined and put to the side. At best, the needs and perspectives of women are considered last, if at all. ✳ Without equal gender representation at all political levels, we cannot be assured that policies at the local, regional, national, or European level are taking ALL citizens into consideration equally and ensuring the best decisions are being made for all, regardless of gender. 🏗 Politics is not a man's world, but it's been built to be one. Let's change this. Join HerEU and become a part of the structured network fighting to change the system, not the women. #WomenInPolitics #MoreWomenInPolitics #GenderEquallity #ItsAMansWorld #SystemChange

🌍 Globally, just 27% of MPs are women. With relatively little representation in government, it is perhaps no surprise that the 2024 SDG Gender Index has found that gender equality is stalling or going backwards for more than 1 billion women and girls worldwide. 👩🏽💻 In addition, female political leaders who belong to racial, ethnic, religious, or other minority groups, and those who speak out about feminist issues, tend to be subjected to more online abuse than men. 📣 "If women tweet less they become less visible, their voices are heard less,” says Luise Koch, who researches online misogyny towards politically active women in Brazil. “Misogyny online is not just a personal issue – it poses a broader challenge to democracy in general, by silencing women." 📩 Read "Why would any woman go into politics? How rising sexist abuse is undermining political representation", a new issue of The Evidence by Josephine Lethbridge, sponsored by Sage 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dJTX-KW7

  • Let's hope the next European Commission will be gender balanced. 🙏 ❔ "European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has asked national capitals to put forward two names for her top team — a man and a woman. To be clear, this is a personal demand, not one written anywhere in the treaties or EU law. But will national leaders comply?" ➰ "There is a loophole. Countries with commissioners who are returning for another term don’t need to provide a second name, and those candidates don’t need to be interviewed by von der Leyen. This is already swinging in a male direction since the commissioners whose governments have announced they’re coming back are guys" 🏅 Hopefully this commission will also be more divers then the previous one. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eEwi3h8p #MoreWomenInPolitics #WomenInPolitics #EuropeanCommission #VDL #GenderBalance #RepresentationMatters #IncludeAllWomen #GenderEquality #Intersectionality #HerEU
