Launched today, our Annual Review of the Human Rights Situation of LGBTI People in Europe and Central Asia confirms that we are entering a new era where LGBTI people have become the testing ground for laws that erode democracy itself. Across Europe and Central Asia, governments are using anti-LGBTI rhetoric to justify restrictions on free speech, civil society, and fair elections. What begins as an attack on LGBTI rights rapidly grows into a wider assault on the rights and freedoms of all individuals in society. “This is not just an LGBTI issue; it is a crisis for human rights and democracy as a whole,” says our Executive Director, Chaber. The EU Commission plans to unilaterally withdraw the proposed Equal Treatment Directive—abandoning vital anti-discrimination protections. This decision weakens the fight for equality, leaving many unprotected against discrimination in housing, healthcare, and education. We demand the Commission reconsider its withdrawal or propose stronger protections now. The EU must stand for equality, not backtrack on fundamental rights.

The European Cancer Organisation has launched a survey to discover and understand the specific barriers LGBTIQ individuals face in #cancer detection, treatment, and survivorship. The survey will: ✅ Identify key obstacles to accessing equitable cancer care ✅ Explore attitudes and approaches of LGBTIQ persons towards healthcare and cancer services The results of the survey will inform policy recommendations designed to improve our #healthcare systems, make them more inclusive, and ensure equitable cancer screening and care. This is a crucial study because more than 45% of #LGBTIQ individuals in Europe report difficulties accessing healthcare. The rates are even higher among trans and intersex persons, studies show. According to the FRA LGBTQI Survey, only 10% of surveyed LGBTIQ individuals have had a #mammogram in the last year compared with 36% of the general population, and only 27% had a #cervicalsmear test in the year before the survey, compared with 36% of the general population, among those who needed these screenings. Participate in the survey now! Find out how at https://lnkd.in/e9Ty_yXF

A groundbreaking new report reveals major gaps, and opportunities, for bi+ groups in the broader European LGBTI movement. Where do we go from here? The survey, conducted by Bi+ Equal, reveals a dynamic but underfunded and underrepresented movement. The findings show that despite bi+ people being the largest group under the LGBTI umbrella, they remain largely invisible, often sidelined in broader LGBTI spaces and political advocacy. The survey also confirms a stark financial disparity between bi+ groups and other LGBTI organisations. While 76% of bi+ groups operate on less than €5,000 annually, LGBTI organisations generally have much larger budgets, making it difficult for bi+ activists to sustain their work. So, what’s the way forward for better resourced and integrated bi+ activism and advocacy? Find out more in our brand new blog 👉 https://lnkd.in/eq8g8FcD

Alongside The AIRE Centre, we welcome the European Court of Human Rights judgment in Bazhenov and Others v. Russia, which found a violation of the right to private life. The ruling highlights the failure of Russian authorities to respond adequately to the non-consensual sharing of the applicants’ private data—including their sexual orientation—by private individuals on social networks.
