🤩 This week I visited 2 amazing #copper production sites of our member Aurubis and was impressed by the long history, passion, and expertise. Both sites are more than 100 years old and Aurubis continues to invest into their development to optimize metal production, circularity and sustainability. Aurubis Beerse recycles copper from all type of low grade scraps and recovers various other metals such as tin, lead and precious metals. ♻️ Everything that you would consider waste is considered as a resource. Closing the loops while minimizing environmental impacts is the motto. I visited the site with MEP Bruno Tobback and we discussed the strategic role of recycling for the EU and challenges faced in practice, such as the administrative burdens hindering the access to secondary materials or the EU ETS framework penalizing recycling of e-waste. Hamburg is Aurubis's biggest site and produces copper cathodes, wire rod, shapes and other copper products from primary materials, but also integrates scrap and recovers various co-products such as sulfuric acid, iron silicate and precious metals. The site impresses by its size and proximity to the city, which creates challenges but also opportunities, such as feeding the city with residual heat. Together with my colleagues, we met the commercial team and discussed the need to better inform the market about copper and its strong EU supply chain. This industry is a backbone of the economy. It's a strategic industry delivering strategic materials but facing many challenges such as high energy costs and administrative burdens. Policy makers must work with our industry to secure its future over the next 100 years and more, with an acute prioritity for the next 5-10 years. The EU Competitiveness Compass sets a good direction. The Clean Industrial Deal, Affordable Energy Action Plan, Metals Action Plan and Circular Economy Act will be key files for us in the coming months. I'm so grateful to all the Aurubis colleagues I met. I learned a lot and felt a real passion for copper and sustainability. 🌍 Have you read ICA Europe’s position paper on the Clean Industrial Deal? 👇
"Recycling and critical raw materials" will be one of the 6 thematic areas of the #CleanIndustrialDeal that the European Commission will propose on February 26 👍 #copper is a strategic material for the EU, the copper industry is therefore strategic. As the International Copper Association Europe, we published our key proposals to support the #competitiveness of copper production in the EU 1️⃣ ensure competitive #energy prices and protection against carbon leakage 2️⃣ facilitate #recycling of copper 3️⃣ streamline the EU legislative framework All of this is essential to achieve the objectives of the Critical Raw Materials Act #CRMA. The EU needs more copper #mining, processing and #recycling, and will announce new strategic projects in March. These projects and existing operations need a strong business case. The Clean Industrial Deal, the Affordable Energy Plan, the Metals Action Plan and the Circular Economy Act that the Commission will develop, will be essential pieces to deliver. We defend strongly these messages together with our members and we had very constructive conversations in the European Parliament this week during #MetalsDay. The upcoming weeks and months will be very important and we are working hard with our team and members. It's time to act.

Today has been a busy day in Strasbourg. During the third edition of the #MetalsDays —organised by Eurometaux (European Metals Association)— the International Copper Association Europe and EPMF (European Precious Metals Federation) co-hosted a high-level panel moderated by Quentin de Hults on "the critical role of Sustainable Raw Materials in shaping the Circular Economy Act and the Green Deal" 🌍🔄 The panel tackled two key challenges: 1) Boosting Metals Recycling in the EU 🔹 Inge Hofkens emphasised the need to improve collection rates of products at end-of-life, enhance sorting quality, and promote design for recycling to ensure more materials can be efficiently recovered. 🔹 Wouter Ghyoot highlighted the importance of easing intra-EU waste shipments containing critical raw materials (CRMs) and eliminating regulatory barriers to ensure recyclers access sufficient secondary materials. 🔹 MEP Sara Matthieu added that recycling and product design policies must align better. In addition, the upcoming Clean Industrial Deal needs to double down on electrification, investments, and a trade policy that strengthens our supply chains. 2) Aligning circularity and climate policies 🔹 Inge Hofkens raised concerns about how ETS regulation disincentivises recycling of e-waste, despite its lower lifecycle emissions. 🔹 Wouter Ghyoot provided examples of chemical management policies that hinder metals recycling and highlighted the need for coherence between circularity and environmental regulations. 🔹 MEP Bruno Tobback underscored the need for better waste collection schemes and a more unified approach across Member States. Consistent regulations and higher collection rates are key to making recycling more attractive and effective. 🔹 MEP Radan Kanev concluded that for the European metals sector to thrive, we need lower energy prices and fewer regulatory constraints. At the same time, improving efficiency, recycling, and material innovation must be supported by coherent legislation. In conclusion, clear and stable policies are essential to meet rising copper demand while ensuring sustainability. To secure Europe’s green transition, we are advocating for: ✔️ A stable regulatory framework that promotes mining, refining, and recycling investments. ✔️ Streamlined permitting and support for strategic raw materials. ✔️ Access to competitively priced, fossil-free energy. ✔️ Better collection, sorting, and recycling systems. Thank you to all our speakers, EPMF (European Precious Metals Federation) for co-hosting, and Eurometaux (European Metals Association) for organising. And, of course, to everyone who joined and shared their insights—your contributions were invaluable. This was the largest raw materials delegation in Strasbourg since the Metals Days began—a truly encouraging sign for what lies ahead! #Copper #RawMaterials #GreenDeal #CleanIndustrialDeal
