About us

The International Planned Parenthood Federation European Network (IPPF EN) is a leading advocate for sexual and reproductive health and rights for all. We work in 41 countries to empower all women, men and young people, especially the most underserved and socially excluded, to live with dignity and to exercise their human right to universal access to sexual and reproductive care. Eradicating poverty and gender inequity is essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in all countries, yet this cannot be achieved without universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). IPPF EN covers a hugely diverse region stretching throughout Europe and Central Asia. From Iceland to Kyrgyzstan, and Norway to Israel, our member associations are independent organisations championing the needs of their local populations, especially the most marginalised. They all provide essential sexual and reproductive health care, from equipping young people with emotional and sexual literacy, family planning guidance for all and HIV prevention, and care, to safe and legal abortion, support for survivors of rape and sexual violence, and maternal health care.

  • 📣 Today, during an event co-organised with the Ministère de la Santé, IPPF's French Member Association, Le Planning familial, marks the 50th anniversary of the legalization of abortion rights in France - a historic milestone. Over the last five decades, Le Planning Familial has been a leading force in providing abortion care, supporting over 500,000 people annually. Despite this progress, the fight is far from over. In recent years, Le Planning Familial has faced increasing attacks from anti-rights organizations seeking to limit access to abortion care. Structural inequalities and geographic disparities continue to make abortion care inaccessible for many, depending on their location or socioeconomic status. The hotline 0800 08 11 11 and the website https://lnkd.in/efUmd69X remain vital resources for women seeking information, support, and guidance on abortion access in France. While the enshrinement of abortion rights in the French Constitution last year was a monumental victory, it is a reminder that our work is not done. We must continue advocating to ensure equitable access to abortion care for all.

#Meta has rolled back critical protections in its hate speech policy, which previously were put in place to protect marginalized communities from harm and stigma. Now rebranded as the ‘hateful conduct’ policy, these changes have dire impacts on women, LGBTQIA+ communities, and advocates of sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice (SRHRJ). Here’s what you need to know: 1️⃣What’s the change? Meta now permits: 👉 Allegations of mental illness based on gender or sexuality. 👉 Dehumanizing language targeted towards transgender people and women 👉 Advocacy for exclusionary practices including bans on transgender people in the military, teaching, sports, etc.  👉 Misinformation targeting racialized groups such as blaming specific ethnic or racial groups for spreading diseases like COVID-19. These changes strip away protections, legitimizing sexist, racist and queerphobic rhetoric to circulate, unchecked. They constitute digital violence, creating hostile online environments that spill into real-world harm. 2️⃣Why is Meta doing this now? These policy changes are a blatant attempt to appease conservative political figures, namely Trump, who will take office on the 20th January 2025. Meta prioritizes profit and political favor over the safety of marginalized communities. 3️⃣How does this impact SRHRJ? Hate speech and misinformation undercut advocates working to promote accurate information and ensure access to safe abortion, contraception, and gender-affirming care. The increased prevalence of it may discourage marginalized voices from participating online due to fear of stigma and online harassment, thus effectively silencing them. This isn’t ‘more speech’ - this is Meta weaponizing HATE SPEECH for political gains. At IPPF, we condemn Meta’s complicity in normalizing violence and discrimination. We demand digital safety and justice for ALL.

Today, we mourn the loss of a truly compassionate and courageous doctor. Dr Thabat Salim, a 30-year-old physician and beloved team member, was tragically killed in an airstrike on the 5th of January in Al-Nuseirat refugee camp, Gaza. Just hours earlier, she had been providing care to women and children as part of a vital humanitarian response by the Palestinian Family Planning and Protection Association (PFPPA). Dr Thabat’s compassion, courage, and dedication made her a beacon of hope for the community she served. She was not just a colleague but a friend, deeply cherished by her team and the countless lives she touched. We join the PFPPA, a Member Association of IPPF, in mourning this heartbreaking loss. Together, we condemn the violence in Gaza, which has claimed over 46,000 lives since October 2023, including more than 1,000 healthcare workers who gave everything to serve their communities. We honour Dr Thabat’s memory and stand united in calling for an end to this unimaginable tragedy. #ippf #Thabat #Dr_Thabat #PFPPA #Gazaunderattack #Palestine #CeasefireNow #gaza

On December 1, Belgium established a legal labor framework for sex work. At IPPF, we’re honored to host Marianne Chargois, a sex worker activist from UTSOPI Belgium, as she shares her story and analysis of a major victory for sex workers: the establishment of a labor framework that ensures their rights and better protection against exploitation. This framework recognizes that sex work is work—deserving of the same protections as other professions, such as access to social security benefits (maternity leave, sick leave, unemployment benefits, pensions) while also addressing the specificities of the profession. The framework guarantees five essential sexual freedoms for sex workers: 1️⃣ The right to refuse a client. 2️⃣ The right to refuse a sexual act. 3️⃣ The right to interrupt a sexual act at any time. 4️⃣ The right to perform sexual acts in the manner they choose. 5️⃣ The right to refuse advertising their services. This is more than a victory—it's a step towards ensuring dignity, safety, and autonomy for sex workers worldwide. 🌍 ➡️ Read Marianne's blog to learn how this success was achieved and the lessons it offers for advancing sex workers' rights everywhere: https://lnkd.in/g9egkWbC

  • 🚨The recent decision to indefinitely ban the private prescription of puberty blockers for trans youth in the UK marks a profoundly troubling development in the ongoing struggle for the rights of trans people and access to necessary, life-saving and evidence-based healthcare. It is a deeply political decision that overrides years of established medical guidance and expertise. ILGA-Europe, IPPF European Network, TGEU — Trans Europe and Central Asia , IGLYO — The International LGBTQI Youth & Student Organisation, and The Kite Trust call on the UK government to reconsider this harmful decision and to engage meaningfully with both the medical and scientific community and civil society groups representing the interests of trans youth and trans adults. • ✨ Everyone’s journey is different. ✨   In this powerful testimony, MEP Merja Kyllönen, from The Left in the European Parliament, Finland, shares her deeply personal story of not being able to have children—and the painful judgement she has faced from those who don’t know her family’s situation.   Whether we want, don't want or cannot have children, reproductive justice means ensuring we all have the freedom and support to make our own choices about our lives. This journey is deeply personal. No one should face shame, stigma, or judgement for who they are or the path they walk. Everyone deserves love, respect, and full support in their reproductive choices and realities.   ❤️ This is what we stand for. This is what we fight for. Reproductive justice for all.   #AWorldWhere #ReproductiveJustice Väestöliitto

The Government announcement extending the ban on prescriptions of puberty delaying treatment will cause upset and anxiety for many trans and non-binary young people. Only a minority of young people seeking help from gender services request or go on to be prescribed puberty suppressing medication, but for over 30 years this has been an important option for those who feel better able to make decisions about transition and future care without managing, day-to-day, the physical changes that come with puberty.
