"Unlocking ERC success": why would an ERC grant not be for you? Last night a small event took place destined to encourage and help young researchers thinking about applying for an ERC grant. The James Webb Space Telescope has proven to be an amazing tool to study the chemical composition of far-away exoplanets. However, a recent study published yesterday in #NatureAstronomy highlights the challenges of determining the exact nature of the atmospheres of exoplanets. Exoplanet Trappist-1b was until now thought to be a dark bare rocky planet without an atmosphere. However, new JWST observations hint at different scenarios, with possible geological activity such as volcanism or the presence of hazy atmosphere composed of carbon dioxide. "One plus one is more than two— the new JWST data of Trappist-1b now allows us to explore alternative scenarios for its atmosphere, whether it exists or not, unlocking new layers of understanding.", says co-author Leen Decin of the Institute of Astronomy of KU Leuven, Belgium. https://lnkd.in/efmx6TpS

Earlier this month, some 70 students from the Faculty of Science (from the Master of Physics, Master of Chemistry, Educatieve Master, and Master of Astronomy and Astrophysics) participated in a study trip to Grenoble – where they visited the ESRF and LNCMI – and to CERN. Op zaterdag 7 december werd een monument ingehuldigd dat de aanwezigheid van de Faculteit Wetenschappen in de binnenstad van Leuven zal bestendigen, ook wanneer de laatste labo's naar Heverlee zullen zijn verhuisd. De maquette toont in welke gebouwen de Faculteit gehuisvest was, van de oprichting in 1817 tot vandaag. Het monument staat op het binnenplein van het Koningscollege in de Naamsestraat. Michael Faraday’s The Chemical History of a Candle, first published in 1861, is one of the most famous popular science books. The book is based on 6 Christmas lectures delivered by Michael Faraday at the Royal Institution (London, UK) in December 1860 and January 1861. Over the course of the lectures Faraday demonstrated to his audiences of around 700 many aspects of the chemistry relating to candles. Starting with how candles are produced, he covered, using very simple experiments, chemical themes including the composition of the gases produced on burning and the structure of the flame itself.
