Commissioner Hearings: What the Future Holds for Energy, Climate, and Liquid Gases A busy two weeks in Brussels finally comes to an end as the Commissioner Hearings conclude, marking a critical moment for the future of the European energy transition! With no official State of the Union by the Commission President this year, join us instead on November 27th - right after the European Parliament votes to approve the College of Commissioners - for the first of a series of State of the Union Webinars, in which we take score of the new political landscape and plot out how this affects the liquid gas industry. Incoming Commissioners Hoekstra, Jorgensen, and Tzitzikostas and Executive Vice-President Ribera outlined bold strategies to diversify energy sources and reduce dependency on fossil fuels. Here are my main takeaways: - Technology neutrality is becoming more attractive, but will they only pay lip-service to it or actually embrace it in future proposals? - Everybody wants a role to play in the Clean Industrial Deal, but nobody can tell you exactly what it is or will be. - MEPs will not accept a Commission that does not cooperate with the European Parliament For industries, transport, and rural heating, liquid gases are well-placed to support Europe’s decarbonization efforts. MEPs showed that they will not back down from holding the Commission accountable to upholding the principles of technology neutrality. As the Commissioner designates await approval by the European Parliament, the entire Bubble will be asking itself whether these Commissioner designates will be capable of balancing immediate energy needs with long-term climate objectives. 🔹 At today’s COGEN Europe Annual Conference, Liquid Gas Europe had the opportunity to engage in pivotal discussions about the future of Europe’s energy and climate strategy. The event brought together leaders, policymakers, and industry experts to share perspectives on achieving a sustainable and competitive energy transition. 🌍⚙️ We heard powerful messages from key speakers, including Marco Pezzaglia, Chair of COGEN Europe, Eero Ailio, Advisor at DG Energy, European Commission, and MEP Radan Kanev, who each emphasized unique aspects of this journey: 💬 Marco Pezzaglia underscored the essential role of cogeneration within the European Green Deal and Clean Industrial Deal, focusing on local empowerment and the importance of a comprehensive Heating and Cooling Decarbonisation Plan. He highlighted the potential of cogeneration for efficient use of renewable gases, biomass, and hydrogen, enabling Europe to achieve net-zero industries with a strong regional impact. 💬 Eero Ailio from DG Energy spoke about a just transition for consumers, with an emphasis on efficiency, innovation, and competitiveness. He outlined the European Commission’s current work under the new Commissioner, including efforts in implementing and enforcing policies, National Energy and Climate Plans, and initiatives for renewable energy and efficiency. Ailio emphasized a regional approach to policy and noted the capex and opex challenges in transitioning from fossil fuel capital to renewable assets. He also highlighted the Industry Act and the Clean Industrial Deal as key frameworks for driving progress. 💬 MEP Radan Kanev, representing the European Parliament, addressed the ambitious 2040 climate target, aiming for a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Kanev highlighted the need for predictability to foster cost-effective and affordable technologies, the critical role of industrial cogeneration, and the existing financing gap for essential industries. He emphasized the importance of strengthening synergies between industries and proposed establishing a reward-based system in the energy sector to drive sustainable progress. The conference underscored that achieving Europe’s climate goals requires a coordinated approach across sectors, blending policy, technology, and financing. Liquid Gas Europe is proud to be part of this journey, committed to supporting a just and practical #energytransition that brings benefits to all.
